Shao’s reckless speed had brought them to the school in record ti, but as they skidded to a stop in front of the wide-open gates, neither he nor Muchen moved to get out.

The gate swayed slightly in the wind, the tal creaking. The school grounds stretched beyond it, eerily silent.

Muchen swallowed hard. A high school. On a normal day, there would be thousands of students here. But now? He didn’t want to think about how many had survived—or worse, how many hadn’t.

Beside him, Shao’s fingers curled tightly around the steering wheel, his knuckles white. His brother was in there.

Finding him was going to be damn near impossible.

Muchen took a steadying breath. "Shao and I will go in. You both stay here."

Qiu Yue, who had been staring blankly at the school, turned his head lazily. "Oh? And what if sothing happens while you two are playing hide and seek in a zombie-infested building?"

Muchen ignored him. He glanced at Hana. "You, doctor guy—"

"Qiu Yue."

"Yeah, whatever. You know how to drive, right? Get up front."

Qiu Yue sighed but unbuckled his seatbelt, moving to the driver’s seat. Muchen and Shao got out, quickly retying the mattress padding around their torsos and grabbing makeshift weapons—Muchen holding the IV stand like a spear, and Shao with a crowbar.

From the back seat, Hana frowned. "So you guys are just going to leave alone with a stranger?"

Both n turned to look at Qiu Yue.

Qiu Yue blinked back at them, face unreadable.

Hana wasn’t done. "He could be a psycho and drive off with . Worse, he could do worse things to ."

Qiu Yue rolled his eyes and gave the two n a tired, almost insulted look. "I have no interest in tomboys."

"Hey!" Hana, offended, reached over and pinched him hard.

Qiu Yue hissed, jerking away. "Plus, I like pretty older won. Not bratty tweens."

"Wow," Hana mumbled, crossing her arms. "I am so offended."

Muchen exhaled sharply and leaned in close, his voice low and firm. "We’ll be back in half an hour or so. And when we co back, she better be exactly the sa as we left her. Even a single scratch on her, and I’ll tear you apart."

His voice was quiet but sharp, like a blade pressed against the skin.

For a brief mont, Qiu Yue’s bored expression slipped into sothing different—his pupils dilating as he stared into Muchen’s face. His hands twitched on the steering wheel.

Because for a second—just a second—Muchen’s black eyes shifted.

A glimr of gold.

A faint glow, there and gone in a blink.

Qiu Yue stiffened. He saw it. He was sure of it.

But then Muchen straightened and turned away, already walking toward the school gates with Shao.

Qiu Yue sat back, blinking hard. His fingers drumd against the wheel as he muttered under his breath, "Did you see that? His eyes changed color."

Hana shrugged, unimpressed. "I didn’t see anything."

"No... They changed," Qiu Yue murmured, his brows furrowing. What the hell was that?

But before he could think too much about it, the two n disappeared beyond the gates, swallowed by the eerie silence of the school.

Inside the School

The mont Muchen and Shao stepped through the gate, the stench hit them.

The sll of rotting flesh, sweat, and sothing else—sothing stale, like old blood soaked into the walls.

The courtyard was eerily still. A few bodies lay scattered across the pavent, unmoving. So were missing limbs. Others had chunks of flesh torn away.

Muchen clenched his jaw. His fingers tightened around the IV stand.

Shao exhaled sharply. "He was supposed to be in class 12 B at this ti." His voice was tense, controlled—but Muchen could hear the underlying fear.

"We’ll start there, then."

Shao nodded, leading the way through the abandoned courtyard. The school building lood ahead, the windows dark. So were shattered. The doors were wide open.

As they stepped inside, the silence deepened.

Then—

A faint shuffle.

Both n froze.

The sound ca from the hallway ahead—slow, dragging steps. A figure erged from the shadows.

A student. Or... what used to be one.

Her uniform was torn, stained with blood. Her head tilted at an unnatural angle, her jaw slack. One of her eyes was missing, leaving an empty socket that oozed dark liquid.

Then—her remaining eye snapped toward them.

And she screeched.

The sound was high-pitched, inhuman—bouncing off the walls and echoing through the empty halls.

And then—

More footsteps.

From the hallways. The classrooms.

From everywhere.

Shadows began to move.

A wave of them.

One by one, zombies poured into the hallway. Students, teachers—so still wearing backpacks, so with textbooks clutched in rotting hands.

Shao took a step back. "We need to move. Now."

Muchen didn’t need to be told twice.

They turned and ran.

Behind them, the hall erupted into chaos—dozens of bodies slamming into walls, desks, chairs—so tripping over each other in their desperation to chase.

Muchen’s heart pounded. They rounded a corner, shoving open a classroom door and slamming it shut behind them.

Panting, they pressed against the door, listening to the sound of frenzied snarling on the other side.

Shao let out a ragged breath. "Holy shit."

Muchen wiped sweat from his brow. "Yeah."

Silence stretched between them.

Then Shao swallowed hard. His voice was quiet. Shaky.

"...What if he’s already dead?"

Muchen turned his head.

Shao wasn’t looking at him. His fingers were clenched into fists, his breathing uneven. His face was tight—like he was trying not to let the fear take over.

Muchen exhaled. Then, carefully, he reached out and gripped Shao’s shoulder.

"He’s not," he said firmly. "We’re going to find him."

Shao let out a shaky laugh. "You sound way too confident."

"I have to be," Muchen admitted. "Otherwise, I’ll lose my damn mind."

Shao huffed, rubbing a hand down his face. "...Yeah."

A pause. Then—

A voice.

Faint. Muffled.

But unmistakably human.

"Help—! Is soone out there?!"

Both n froze.

Their eyes snapped toward the far end of the classroom—toward the windows that overlooked the school courtyard.

A boy stood there, on the second-floor balcony of the opposite building.
