As Alex stepped deeper into the heart of Elaris Hold, the pungent odor that had rely lingered around Jusin before now surged forward in full force, enveloping him like an unseen tide.

It hit with startling intensity, a sour, organic stench that seed to rise from the very stones beneath his feet.

The sll clawed its way up his nostrils and settled thickly in the back of his throat, an unholy mixture of damp, matted fur, churned soil, and the acrid musk of animals penned too close together for too long.

It was a heady blend of damp fur, churned earth, and the acrid tang of animal sweat, a sll so potent it seed to coat the back of his throat.

Instinctively, his features contorted in a grimace, his face scrunching as the overpowering stench assaulted his senses.

His nose wrinkled sharply, twitching in protest as he fought the urge to gag, and he attempted, almost comically, to seal his nostrils without the aid of his hands, drawing his upper lip tight and flaring his cheeks in a desperate, subtle defense.

It was a futile gesture, a childlike reflex more than a strategy, but the instinct to shield himself from the offensive air was too strong to ignore.

His eyes watered slightly, and he pressed his lips into a thin line, hoping to block out the worst of it.

The effort was subtle, but not subtle enough.

Jusin caught the movent, his keen eyes flicking to Alex’s contorted expression.

A loud, booming chuckle erupted from him, the sound bouncing off the high stone walls of the compound like a drumroll.

"Caught that, did you?" he said, his voice thick with amusent.

He clapped a broad, calloused hand on Alex’s shoulder, the impact firm enough to jolt him slightly, like the solid thud of a tree branch falling into place.

but there was nothing threatening in the gesture. It was grounding, anchoring Alex in the mont with a kind of gruff affection, the way a father might steady a nervous son.

"Sorry about the stink, lad. Taking care of the animals can be stressful, especially in the morning. Feeding, cleaning, it gets a bit ripe before the day’s half done."

His tone carried a thread of apology, but it was softened by a casual lightness, the kind that cos from years of resigned familiarity.

It wasn’t the voice of a man ashad of the sll, but of soone who had long since stopped fighting it, who had accepted the stink as part of his world, like a stubborn neighbor or a creaky floorboard.

Alex nodded quickly, forcing a tight, polite smile despite the mortification creeping up his neck.

Heat flushed his cheeks, a prickling embarrassnt that Jusin, his new adoptive father, had noticed his reaction.

He swallowed hard, the taste of the air lingering on his tongue, and silently berated himself.

He needed to be on his best behavior, to impress this family who’d taken him in.

The last thing he wanted was to seem ungrateful or weak, especially not on his first day.

He straightened his posture, adjusting the strap of his pack, and resolved to keep his discomfort buried deep.

Inside Elaris Hold, the compound unfolded before him, a sprawling expanse that dwarfed Thalorin’s mansion in both size and strangeness.

The air buzzed with life, rustling leaves, distant chirps, and the occasional low growl that sent a shiver down his spine.

Cages and enclosures lined the periter, their wooden and tal fras interwoven with vines that pulsed faintly, as if alive themselves.

Alex’s eyes darted from one to the next, taking in the sights.

So held plants he recognized, vibrant ferns and clusters of daisies, but most were alien, their forms twisting in ways that defied human logic.

A tree with leaves that shimred like glass caught his gaze, its branches swaying without wind, while a creature with iridescent scales and too many legs skittered across a nearby pen.

The unfamiliarity of it all made his head spin, a mix of awe and unease settling in his chest.

Jusin noticed his staring and grinned, his beard shifting with the motion.

"Elves have a habit of collecting what fascinates us," he explained, his voice carrying a note of pride.

"We’ve taken so of your human plants and animals, the ones that catch our eye, and brought them here. We Study them, nurture them. It keeps us busy."

He gestured broadly at the enclosures, his mud-stained hand sweeping through the air. "You’ll get used to the oddities. They grow on you."

Alex nodded again, his eyes lingering on a flower with petals that pulsed faintly, like a heartbeat.

The idea of elves curating a nagerie of Earth’s wonders intrigued him, though the sheer scale of it left him feeling small and out of place.

A soft rustle of fabric drew his attention, and he turned to see a figure erging from a shadowed corner of the compound.

She was a female elf, her beauty striking yet fragile, like a porcelain doll left too long in the sun.

Her skin was pale, almost translucent, stretched taut over delicate bones, and her eyes, large and gray, held a sadness that seed to weigh her down.

She moved with a quiet grace, her simple gown brushing the ground, unadorned save for a single red ruby chain that glead at her throat.

The gem caught the light, a stark splash of color against her muted presence.

When her gaze fell on Thalorin, those mournful eyes brightened, a flicker of life sparking within them, as if his presence alone could lift the veil of her sorrow.

Alex watched the shift, a quiet wonder stirring in him.

Thalorin seed to command affection effortlessly, first Jusin’s warm grin, now this elf’s subtle glow.

How loved must he be, Alex thought, for this family to hold him in such high regard?

The question lingered as Thalorin stepped forward, his face softening with recognition. "Griesla," he called, his voice a gentle summons as he stretched his arms out, inviting her into a hug.

The na rolled off his tongue with familiarity, a thread of tenderness woven into it.
