Led by Scarlett, a ten-mber team ventured deep into the heart of the Mayan Forest.
A Kommo-o led the charge, clearing the way, while two Machamps carried the research equipnt with ease, their eight arms making light work of the burden. A Shiftry and a Weavile stalked through the undergrowth on either side, keeping watch, while a Braviary soared above, its sharp eyes scanning the terrain for any threats.
By one in the afternoon, we had left the outer edges of the Mayan Forest and were pushing deeper into its dense wilderness. The danger rating of the area escalated from D to C, and it looked like we were heading into B-level territory.
Around five in the afternoon, John attempted to catch a passing Rhydon just to gauge its strength—LV47. Back at school, that would already classify as a Senior Pokemon. But John, ever the laid-back one, was still lounging at the back of the group, sprawled under Venusaur's massive flower canopy, watching TV dramas on his Gaboy like this was a casual stroll through the park.
John's perception of Scarlett's strength was still stuck on her record from two years ago—defeating a foreign Elite in a one-on-one battle. Sure, foreign Elites might not be on the sa level as Draconia's, but they weren't pushovers either. At the very least, Scarlett had gym-level combat skills, maybe even top-tier gym strength. And that was a year ago. After her campaign against the Japanese team, she might actually be on par with an Elite now.
With a powerhouse like her leading the expedition, what was there to worry about? Might as well kick back, play so tunes, and have a little fun.
As for why we were here? Scarlett had one goal: to locate a rare magnetic field—one capable of triggering a Nosepass's evolution into a Probopass. John couldn't understand the need for this wild goose chase. Draconia was massive, ho to over a dozen known special magnetic fields capable of evolving Pokemon.
After all, any field strong enough to evolve a Nosepass could also turn a Magneton into a Magnezone or a Charjabug into a Vikavolt. These two were absolute powerhouses in the Electric-type category, and trainers had been capturing and raising them for years. But Scarlett was determined to find a fresh, untouched one. Maybe she had her reasons. Since I technically worked under her lab and even lived in one of her villas, it wasn't like I could say no when she invited along.
"We'll set up camp ahead for the night," Scarlett called out from the front of the group.
The sun was already dipping toward the horizon, and soon, the nocturnal Pokemon would erge to hunt. Not the best ti to keep moving.
We traveled another hundred ters before stopping near a rocky cliff. A small stream flowed nearby, and there were remnants of a previous firepit—charred wood, scattered ash. Looked like we weren't the first to camp here.
Everyone instinctively dropped their packs and got to work setting up tents. Going on field expeditions like this was routine for Scarlett's research team.
John, of course, took the lazy route. Instead of setting up a proper tent, he simply draped a waterproof tarp over Venusaur's back. Crawling inside, he instructed Gardevoir to use Secret Power to create a cozy secret base in the thick branches sprouting from Venusaur's back. The move just needed a dium to work, and Venusaur's foliage was as good as anything.
Lying on his Simmons mattress inside the hidden retreat, John sighed in contentnt. Secret Power was truly a godsend for travel. Every trainer should have it.
After a group dinner, Scarlett sent out a Honchkrow and a Mismagius to keep watch. Honchkrow's sharp vision would catch anything lurking in the dark, while Mismagius could ward off Ghost-type Pokemon. If needed, it could even use Dream Eater strategically to wake up the team in an ergency.
Shiftry and Weavile remained outside, nesting in the trees, ever vigilant.
John, being John, sneaked back into his secret base for a second dinner. Sure, the salted fish, teala, pork jerky, and rice they had earlier were decent, but they lacked that extra sothing. So, he pulled out a frozen M9 steak from his portable fridge, fried it up, and paired it with a cold Coke. Selecting a movie, he settled in with his Gaboy. Honestly? Life wasn't that different from being back at school.
Since they had to wake up early, John didn't stay up too late. He planned to turn in by 10:30, though he still squeezed in a few dungeon runs in his Gaboy's underground power plant ga. The previous two runs had already boosted his Venusaur to level 34, and he was eager for more progress.
Just as he was about to start a third run, Scarlett's urgent voice rang out from the camp. "Everyone, get up! Bring your Pokemon! Now!"
John barely had ti to react before scrambling out of his makeshift tent. "Professor Scarlett, what's going on?!"
"My Xatu used Future Sight and detected an impending battle between legendary Pokemon. We have to get out of here, fast!"
Drowsy researchers stumbled out of their tents, so still half-asleep. Judging by their dazed expressions, Mismagius must have used Dream Eater to jolt them awake.
"Wait... a 'battle of gods'?" John echoed. It was his first ti hearing the term.
Scarlett didn't answer right away. Instead, she shouted for imdiate evacuation.
The exhaustion from the long day was instantly forgotten. The mont Scarlett ntioned the words "battle of gods," every researcher sprang into action, recalling their Pokemon, packing up tents in record ti. What normally took half an hour was done in five minutes.
And then? They ran.
No one was walking. Everyone was either sprinting or riding on their mount Pokemon—Arcanine, Rapidash, Altaria, Skarmory, the works. John hopped onto Flygon and took off.
It wasn't just their team fleeing. As they moved, they saw countless Pokemon bolting from the deeper parts of the forest. Flying-types darkened the sky, while ground-dwellers stampeded below. None were fighting each other. They were all running for their lives.
After covering over ten kiloters, Scarlett finally slowed down slightly.
"Alright, what exactly is a 'battle of gods'?" John demanded. "And why did an entire forest worth of Pokemon just decide to book it?"
Scarlett, still perched atop her Salance, was about to explain when—
BOOM!
A deafening explosion tore through the sky, like two titans colliding. The shockwave sent ripples through the air. A blinding burst of fire erupted in the distance, igniting the treetops. Flas spread rapidly, casting a hellish glow over the forest.
Through the inferno, two figures lood in the night sky. Their forms were obscured by the smoke and chaos, but as the moonlight illuminated them, John's breath hitched.
"No way..."
There, hovering over the burning jungle, were not one, but two Landorus.
