[Wattson: Young man, you still need to work harder!]
Amid the hearty laughter of Old Man Wattson, Chris was defeated.
It had taken him an entire day to progress the story to Mauville City, where the third gym, Mauville Gym, awaited him.
Along the way, he cleared the Trick House, earned a Rare Candy, defeated his rival May, and received the Dowsing Machine, which helps find hidden items. Upon arriving at Mauville City, he faced Old Man Wattson but was soundly beaten.
Tie Xuan's team consisted of three Pokémon, but Chris only saw two: a level 29 Voltorb and a level 33 Magneton.
Chris's own team was made up of a level 23 Combusken, Frogadier, and Kirlia. Unfortunately, this was not a Fighting-type gym, so he didn't have any type advantages. In fact, Frogadier was at a disadvantage against Tie Xuan's Electric-types and took a beating.
If it weren't for Combusken and Kirlia putting up a strong fight, Chris might not have even seen Tie Xuan's Magneton, let alone his final Pokémon.
"Looks like I need a Ground-type Pokémon," Chris muttered as he directed the protagonist to Granite Cave.
He had already scoured the grass near Mauville City, where the only additional Pokémon he found were Illumise, Volbeat, and Roselia.
None of these Pokémon interested Chris, so he decided to head back to Granite Cave while training and searching for new Pokémon.
"Drip drip..."
Chris's phone buzzed with a new text ssage.
"Kirlia~" Kirlia finished using Calm Mind and used Confusion to float the phone over to Chris.
He glanced at the screen and saw a ssage from soone nad "Olivia."
[Olivia: Please report to Teaching Building A, Classroom 3, before 6:00 p.m. today, August 16, for the first class eting.]
"Olivia must be the counselor," Chris mumbled as he checked the ti. It was already five o'clock in the afternoon.
Ti to grab a bite, take a shower, and then head to class.
No rush on the shiny hunting just yet.
He ordered so takeout and made his way downstairs.
In the living room, Makuhita was sprawled on the couch, holding popcorn in one hand and a big soda in the other, glued to the LCD TV. When it saw Chris coming downstairs, it smiled brightly.
"Makuhita~~╭(^▽^)╯"
"Be careful not to spill it," Chris reminded. Makuhita's hands were like mittens—no fingers—so things often slipped out if it wasn't careful.
In fact, in the two days since moving into the new house, Makuhita had already broken three glasses.
At the door, Combusken and Frogadier were sparring.
Losing to Wattson had left them both energized. Not every Pokémon could be as carefree as Makuhita.
Then again, Makuhita hadn't even gotten a chance to battle, so it was completely unbothered.
After feeding the Pokémon, Chris headed upstairs for a quick shower. By the ti he finished, Frogadier had already retrieved the takeout.
They ate, and soon it was 5:40 p.m.
Chris recalled his Pokémon and headed to Teaching Building A.
Most of the new students had already arrived, but the campus still felt quiet.
Every year, Dragon University admits only around 2,000 freshn, with just 500 on each campus. Many of the older students were already off on internships or adventures.
As a result, the Dragon University-Flight campus, even with teachers and staff included, had fewer than 2,000 people in total.
Suddenly, Chris understood why Breeder students were given single villas on campus.
As he walked through the grounds, he noticed that most of the students passing by were girls. From the dormitory to the classroom, Chris had already been asked for his phone number by three older students.
It wasn't just due to his good looks—Dragon University's skewed gender ratio, with more girls than boys, created this "Situation."
When Chris arrived at the No. 3 classroom, it was already brightly lit and bustling, with the occasional sound of Pokémon cries filling the room.
As soon as he stepped inside, several gazes imdiately Lock-On to him.
"Another handso guy!" one girl exclaid.
This sentint was echoed by many others.
There were over 40 students in the classroom, at least 30 of them girls, making the boy-to-girl ratio nearly one to four.
It wasn't just boys scoping out attractive girls in a new environnt—girls were also on the lookout for handso guys. Especially in a place like Dragon University, where the competition was fierce for a "high-quality" male student, it was clear that Chris had already caught so attention.
The "previous" handso guy in question sat in the third row, a mixed-race student with blonde hair, black eyes, and a sharp nose. Even with average facial features, these striking details gave him a distinctive and attractive appearance.
"Find a seat and sit down," a female voice gently reminded Chris.
Standing at the podium was a woman with long black hair, dressed in a short skirt and black stockings. The gold-rimd glasses perched on her nose added a touch of intelligence to her appearance. She was likely Olivia, the class counselor.
Chris scanned the room and chose an empty seat at the back. Quietly, he pulled out his handheld console and began hunting for shinies in Granite Cave.
At exactly 6:00 p.m., Olivia checked her watch, called out the nas of the students, and confird the attendance.
Satisfied that everyone had arrived on ti, she set down the list and addressed the class with the tone of an experienced teacher:
"Good, no one was late on the first day."
"I also hope this continues in the future."
"Tonight, we have two main things to address. First, we need to choose the class committee."
"Does anyone want to volunteer for a class committee position?"
"If you're interested, co up, introduce yourself, and let us know which role you're running for."
Olivia paused before adding, "As soone who's been through this, I want to remind you that being part of a university class committee is very different from high school. There are extra perks—whether you're looking to join the student union, gain more experience, or have more opportunities to connect with teachers and participate in extracurricular activities."
Chris rembered going through a similar process back when he started high school, but this ti, he wasn't interested.
Perks? What perks could compare to the million pokédollars he made daily now?
