Chapter 99: Chapter 99 Sothing Interesting
DAMIEN’S POV
The drive back from Simon’s house was quiet. Tiffany sat in the passenger seat. I could sll the anxiety rolling off her in waves.
"Damien?" she said softly after we’d been driving for about ten minutes. "I need to go back to my hotown for a few days."
I noticed the way she was staring out the window instead of looking at . "Is everything okay?"
"Yes, it’s just... my aunt isn’t doing well. She helped raise
after my parents died, and I should be there for her. I know the timing isn’t great, with everything happening with you and Sophia, but-"
"Go," I said imdiately. "Family is important."
She turned to look at
then "Really? You don’t mind?"
"Of course not." I shrugged "When do you leave?"
"Tomorrow afternoon. The flight is at three."
"I’ll drive you to the airport," I offered. "And text
your return flight information. I’ll pick you up too."
The smile that spread across Tiffany’s face was radiant. "Thank you, Damien. That ans so much to ." She reached over and squeezed my hand. "You’re always so good to ."
I squeezed back, but sothing felt off. Sothing inside
felt wrong, sohow. My wolf was restless. I felt him pacing inside
like he was looking for sothing.
Or soone.
I pushed the feeling away and focused on driving.
When I got back to Stone Villa, the house felt empty despite Franca moving around in the kitchen. Ashley was at school. She wouldn’t be back for another three hours.
"Franca," I called out. "Has Sophia been by recently?"
Franca looked up from where she was preparing ingredients for dinner. "No, sir. She hasn’t been here in over a week.”
I frowned. That was weird. Sophia was becoming more unavailable these days.
"Has she called? Texted about Ashley?" I asked.
"No, sir. There has been no contact."
What kind of mother just disappeared like that? Ashley was her daughter, her responsibility yet Sophia was off doing goddess knows what while our child asked for her.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Sophia’s number.
She answered on the third ring. "What is it, Damien?"
Her voice was flat. Her tone got on my nerves in ways I couldn’t explain.
"You need to take Ashley to school tomorrow," I said "Be here at seven."
There was a long pause. "Why can’t you take her?"
"Because I’m busy”
There was another pause, longer this ti. I could hear her breathing on the other end.
"Fine," she finally said. "I’ll be there at seven."
"And Sophia? You should actually spend ti with your daughter. She needs you”
"I’m aware of what my daughter needs, Damien. I don’t need parenting advice from soone who’s too busy playing house with his mistress to notice his own child."
She hung up before I could respond.
I stared at my phone in disbelief. I felt my wolf pushing against my control.
When had Sophia beco so bold? So willing to challenge ?
And why did part of
find it... interesting?
SOPHIA’S POV
I hung up on Damien and threw my phone on the bed. My whole body shook with anger. Take Ashley to school? Like I was so kind of hired driver instead of her mother?
My wolf was snarling. She was furious at being ordered around by a mate who’d shown us nothing but disrespect for years. But underneath the anger was pain. Ashley had been asking for . My baby wanted , and I hadn’t been there.
The next morning, I woke up early and got dressed.
I arrived at the villa at exactly seven o’clock. The front door was unlocked, as always. I let myself in and went to the living room, sitting down on the couch to wait.
This was different from before. Before, I would have gone straight to the kitchen, started preparing Ashley’s favorite breakfast, made sure everything was perfect. I would have set the table, poured juice, maybe even prepared Damien’s coffee the way he liked it.
But I wasn’t that woman anymore.
So. I sat and waited with my phone in hand. I scrolled through emails from the university about my upcoming doctoral program.
About ten minutes later, I heard footsteps on the stairs. Damien appeared. He was dressed in a suit but without his tie. His shirt looked slightly wrinkled, like it needed to be pressed.
He stopped when he saw
sitting in the living room instead of bustling around the kitchen.
"You’re here," he said, and was that surprise in his voice?
"You told
to be here at seven. It’s seven." I looked back down at my phone. "Where’s Ashley?"
"Still getting dressed." Damien walked further into the room. His eyes scanned the space. "Did you make breakfast?"
I didn’t look up "No."
I could feel him frowning "Why not?"
"Because you asked
to take Ashley to school, not make breakfast." I looked up at him.
Damien’s jaw clenched. I could see his wolf right behind his eyes.
"Sophia-"
"Mommy!" Ashley’s voice rang out from upstairs. A mont later, she ca running down the stairs, still in her pajamas. "Mommy, you’re here!"
With a smile, I opened my arms, and Ashley crashed into , hugging
tight.
"hey baby” I whispered into her hair. I kissed her chubby cheeks.
She looked at
with a pout "Will you make
breakfast? Please? I want your pancakes."
I looked at Damien over Ashley’s head. He was watching us with an unreadable expression.
"Not today, sweetheart," I said gently. "We don’t have ti but we can stop and get sothing on the way to school if you want."
She nodded “Okay”
I ruffled her hair “Now, go get dressed for school”
Ashley nodded then walked back upstairs to get ready.
"You could have made breakfast," he said "There’s ti."
"I could have," I agreed. "But I chose not to."
"Actually, while we’re on the subject of tasks..." Damien glanced down at his shirt, then back at . "I need you to iron this shirt”
I stared at him, certain I’d misheard. "Excuse ?"
"My shirt. It needs to be pressed. The iron is in the laundry room."
My wolf growled with anger as soon as he said it. He wanted
to iron his shirt? Like I was the help? Like I was a maid instead of his wife?
"No," I said simply.
Damien’s eyes narrowed. "What did you say?"
"I said no. I’m not ironing your shirt." I stood up, facing him directly. "Ask Franca or do it yourself. I’m here to take our daughter to school, not to be your personal servant."
"I’m not asking you to be a servant. I’m asking you to do one simple task-"
"And I’m declining. Simple as that." I crossed my arms. "You have two functioning hands and presumably know how an iron works. Figure it out."
The room temperature seed to drop. Damien’s wolf was right at the surface now. I felt his presence filling the space with alpha dominance that would have made most wolves in the pack imdiately submit.
But I just stood there, eting his eyes.
For a long mont, we stared at each other. The mate bond pulled between us but I ignored it.
Finally, Damien’s expression shifted to sothing cold.
"Fine," he said. "I’ll do it myself."
He turned and walked back upstairs.
