The soft glow of lanterns along the newly forged path flickered gently, casting long shadows as Seraphis and Lysara walked side by side. The cool night breeze carried the scent of fresh earth and arcane energy, mingling with the ever-present hum of magic that lingered in this created realm. Moonlight stread through the canopy above, illuminating the path ahead as they approached a modest structure nestled near the town’s outer wall.

The building wasn’t large—just a tall, narrow tower made of gray stone and smooth, black iron. A single white banner hung from the wall above the door, emblazoned with the insignia of a raven in flight, wings spread wide against a moon. As they got closer, Lysara tilted her head, curiosity already bubbling up in her eyes.

“This is the guard’s keep?” she asked, taking in the structure’s elegant yet sturdy design. “It’s smaller than I expected.”

“It’s not the size that matters,” Seraphis replied with a soft chuckle. “This place is designed for precision, not intimidation. Co on, I want to show you sothing.”

They stepped through the ironwood door, the interior of the tower lit by crystal sconces that glowed with gentle azure light. The stone walls were smooth and cool, enchanted to regulate temperature and prevent deterioration. A long hallway led toward a stairwell spiraling upward, but instead of heading up, Seraphis turned toward a side door labeled simply: Captain's Office.

As they walked past the hall, Lysara paused and looked through the arched windows that faced the inner courtyard. Figures moved with quiet discipline beyond the glass—n and won dressed in sleek black uniforms, their movents coordinated and precise. Each bore a white raven emblem on their shoulder or chest, contrasting starkly with the black armor they wore. Their faces were calm, emotionless yet oddly human.

Lysara narrowed her eyes. “Wait… those are golems? They look like real people. I an, seriously—look at them. I thought golems were supposed to look… stony or chanical.”

Seraphis gave a faint smile, her hand already on the handle of the office door. “They are golems. Just not the kind you're used to.”

She pushed open the door, revealing a spacious office with walls of darkwood bookshelves, a large window overlooking the forest, and a polished black desk with silver inlays. Behind the desk sat a tall man with jet-black hair and sharp silver eyes, wearing the sa black uniform with the white raven insignia emblazoned across his chest. His posture was relaxed, yet there was an undeniable authority in the way he sat. He looked up from a stack of parchnt with a smirk curling on his lips.

Lysara blinked. “Okay… now I know you’re ssing with . That’s definitely a person.”

Seraphis didn’t respond right away. Instead, she stepped forward, gesturing toward the seated figure. “This is the captain of the Raven Guard. He oversees the town’s safety and ensures the laws are upheld.”

The man gave a courteous nod. “Pleasure to et you, Lady Lysara. You can call Kaelen.”

Lysara raised a skeptical eyebrow. “Kaelen, huh? You sure you’re not just… so guy Seraphis found and dressed up in armor?”

Kaelen chuckled softly, then leaned back in his chair. “Well, it’s a pleasure to et you too. Though your welco could use a little more charm.” His smile was good-natured, but his eyes held sothing deeper—an ancient, weathered wisdom. “But I understand the confusion. We do look human, after all.”

Seraphis moved beside the desk, her expression soft but firm. “Lysara, Kaelen is a golem—but not just any golem. He, and others like him, were created differently.”

Lysara crossed her arms. “You said no humans or living people were involved in the guards. You made it sound like they were all just constructs.”

Kaelen gave a faint nod. “And we are. But we are also living. In a way.”

Lysara looked between them, clearly not satisfied. “You’re going to have to explain that.”

Seraphis sighed lightly, then looked to Kaelen, who gave a respectful nod, signaling that she should go on.

“I did create the Raven Guard,” Seraphis began, her voice calm and filled with weight. “But instead of crafting them like soulless machines, I did sothing different. I found souls—wandering spirits from realms beyond, people who had died but still had a spark of purpose. They were lost, without bodies or hos. I offered them a choice: a second chance. A new life, in new forms. A way to live again, not as they once were, but as protectors. Guardians of peace. They accepted.”

Kaelen’s voice was steady as he added, “Our souls may have co from many places—warriors, mages, scholars, even farrs. But Seraphis gave us purpose again. She gave us a ho. These bodies are golem shells, yes. But what’s inside?” He placed a hand over his heart, “It’s a soul, sa as yours. We breathe, we think, we dream. We don’t age, but we feel. That makes us alive, doesn’t it?”

Lysara stared for a long mont, her mouth slightly open. The flickering blue light of the wall crystals shimred across Kaelen’s armor, making him appear almost ethereal. Slowly, she stepped closer, watching him with wide, curious eyes. “You really… feel? You think like we do?”

“We do,” Kaelen said gently. “We don’t sleep, but we rest. We don’t eat, but we can taste. We don’t bleed, but we understand pain—both physical and emotional. We are not puppets or programd things. We are guardians by choice.”

Lysara turned toward Seraphis, her expression unreadable for a mont. “You… really gave them new lives?”

“I promised them sothing better,” Seraphis said quietly. “And I intend to keep that promise. This town, this realm—it’s more than a sanctuary. It’s a second chance for everyone, even those who were lost to ti.”

Kaelen stood then, tall and proud, his figure casting a strong shadow against the polished floor. “We exist to serve this place, and to protect it from within and without. No one will threaten Moonlight Town so long as we draw breath—or whatever you’d call it for us.”

Lysara shook her head with a soft laugh, a smile slowly forming. “You know… this place just keeps getting more and more incredible.”

Seraphis chuckled. “And we’ve only just begun.”

As they stepped back out into the glowing corridor, Lysara glanced once more at the guards patrolling outside. Now, they didn’t look like cold machines. They looked like people with stories—souls given form, protectors who had chosen a new fate.

Moonlight Town wasn’t just a haven. It was a rebirth—for everyone who dared to believe in it.
