Capítulo 1117: Sitting Ducks

The modified dirt-bloods were an exceptional invention and advancent, but unfortunately, they weren’t exactly adapted to deal with the current situation.

They had naturally been made with the intent of being useful on the battlefield, in the scenario Vijudius and the others had to deal with, these creatures served basically no purpose, their limited intelligence and reliance on orders ant that within the dense jungle, they would be even simpler targets than the regular human soldiers.

So, as it stood, the situation remained the sa but at least, if a fight were to break out, they would have access to these powerful atshields, as that was essentially the main purpose of their existence, using enemy troops to create ally troops that could be killed and destroyed in the place of an elf or human.

Saturnina had explicitly developed them to limit casualties first, and given them special functions as a bonus, the whole point was to develop and upgrade this craft to make them better atshields.

Vijudius found the idea excellent, but it just wasn’t of use to him right now.

So, he could only sit down whilst staring at the jungle, trying to co up with a strategy that would allow them to enter and actually do sothing aningful without losing over half of their troops due to the extre imbalance of power between them and the dirt-bloods.

The foul monsters held all the cards right now, the Mountain Jungle was their turf, they had prepared to retreat into it from the very beginning, they had, without a doubt, already prepared traps, camps and ambushes spot, following after them recklessly was a fool’s errand, and nothing short of suicide.

Even with elves around, getting through was complicated, the enemy had powerful soldiers as well, and within the jungle, chaos could quickly erupt and all battle formations would be impossible to put into place.

The correct thing to do would be to send in a small group of elites, but with the looming presence of the Verfolger above, that was not possible… Truly, the main reason for the plight of the human and elven domains was that their best warriors could not be put to proper use because of the threat of the hunters.

If not for that, the dirt-bloods would have since long tasted nurous defeats, if not total annihilation.

Vijudius seed to be left out of this, and many had noticed that with his fight inside the dirt-blood camp, but he was only a single man, the enemy would rely need to bring out multiple of their strongest fighters to ambush him in the jungle and that would be it for him.

As powerful as he was, the young knight was far from invincible, he had the potential to be a knight of imnse renown, but he was still young, he lacked experience and ti.

Indeed, since knights nourished their physiques with their fighting spirit, ti was a strong factor in their overall strength, the longer it had been since they had begun their knight training and started wielding fighting spirit, the more they would have been able to enhance themselves on top of earning experience and learning skills.

Vijudius was so powerful rely because his fighting spirit was far more powerful than normal, but that strength was disproportionate compared to his skill level and lived experience.

His true education as a knight had only truly begun on the day he faced off against the flail-wielding battlefield hunter, before then, his actual combat experience had been null, so while he had been doing excellent, he could have certainly perford far better had he not been such a rookie that was rely applying what he had learned safely through lessons and friendly spars.

A warrior could only truly learn by being in true danger and putting their life on the line, this was akin to the difference between theory and practice, one might know how everything was supposed to be done, how you were supposed to react to any given situation, but knowing was only half the battle, the knowledge one had acquired needed to be put to the test in a real situation.

It served no purpose to know how you were supposed to deflect a blow, if when a blow ca to you, you just froze and let it hit you squarely in the head.

Even now, Vijudius was still digesting everything he had experienced, trying to translate his experiences into genuine insight.

There was just one slight problem with all of this, naly, the individual sitting next to him–Too close to him, in fact.

“Can I… Can I help you?”

For so reason, Giliniel spent her ti close to him, and her idea of personal space was a bit different to his.

Elves all shared links to one another, so communication and the sharing of intent was seamless, aning that they very rarely had misunderstandings or awkward situations where one person thought one thing, whilst the other believed the opposite…

As such, an elf inherently behaved differently from a human, they lived differently, they shared different connections to others… As much as humans and elves might look alike physically, they were truly completely different in many aspects.

Which was probably why the grudge between the two sapient species had ford in the first place.

But what this ant to Vijudius right now, was that Giliniel wasn’t putting herself in his shoes, and did not think of the fact that they didn’t share any link.

In short, she was not understanding that sitting so close to him was making Vijudius feel incredibly awkward, the worst part, was that even when the knight stared directly ahead, doing his best not to acknowledge her presence, he could feel small wind movents as she moved her head due to her pointy ears being so long that one of them was close to brushed against his own ear.

As such, the knight sought to understand why she was here to begin with, but he quickly regretted it as his gaze instantly fell on his muscular arms… Those two limbs, for so reason, plagued his mind and even if he couldn’t rember it, he was fairly certain that they were in his dreams as well.

Thankfully, arms weren’t exactly a typical spot that n would stare at with lecherous thoughts, so his odd stares weren’t noticed much.

“Help ? There is no need, I am just hanging out” she replied.

‘Why are you hanging out right next to ?! Hold on…’ he glanced at the elf.

‘There is no way, right? Or is there? No… No, no, no… I insulted her quite a bit when we first t, and it isn’t like we have spent that much ti together, that makes no sense! And she is an elf too! No, there must be another reason for this…’

Vijudius cleared his throat.

“I an, I can’t help but notice that you spend an awful lot of ti following around and just silently staying next to , that’s a bit odd” he said.

“Mmh… What can I say? My leaders want to keep an eye on you for so reason, probably afraid that you’ll go and fight on your own only to nearly die… Again” the elf leaned her head against her palm, giving the human a long stare.

“You are one of the stronger individual around, so I guess they don’t want to lose that advantage”

Frankly, Vijudius was a bit disappointed by the answer, he didn’t dare admit to himself what he would have liked to hear, but that definitely had not been what he had just been told.

“Why would I even run off into the jungle? There is no incentive to do so…” the knight shook his head, deciding that now would be a good ti to stir this conversation elsewhere.

“By the way, don’t you elves have anything useful? Your mages live longer than ours and I hear rumours that you have more of them as well, so don’t they have sothing developed to help?”

“Insinuating that even with more ti and manpower we can’t match a single human apprentice, are we?”

“Imply sothing bad about the elves? ? I would never! You know how much I appreciate and respect elves”

Giliniel rolled her eyes.

“I am not exactly inford about such things, I am more of a muscle than a brain, I wasn’t given any real position of decision-making- But as far as I am aware, they should have sothing in stock”

“Any idea what it could be?”

“No clue whatsoever, but don’t get your hopes up, chances are that they will follow the sa idea as your human apprentice and develop glorified atshields to prevent casualties”

Silence fell over the human and elf.

“…Any idea on how to approach the current situation?”

“None whatsoever, what about you?”

“None either… Will we really just have to go in blind?”

“I am afraid that if we don’t want to give them too much ti to do whatever horrors they get down to… Yes, we’ll have to just go and hope for the best unless soone thinks of sothing good”

Vijudius sighed.

It was an awful feeling to be so powerless.
