Last Hope - While in Layer II

Silence wasn't empty.

Not here.

It breathed between the steel walls and synthetic sky, humming in the veins of a city built on control. In Fade's absence, the world didn't pause-but it listened.

Kaela sat cross-legged within her training pod, the interface around her flickering softly with holographic strands of code. Her eyes were half-closed, fingers twitching occasionally as new subroutines were manually adjusted.

[Cognitive Sync - Active]

[Processing Delay: 0.41 seconds | Source: External Interference Detected]

[Flagged: Class Delta Echo - Unstable Code Signature]

She frowned. The anomaly matched no known pattern-until she ran it backward. Then forward again.

A shadow embedded in the system's rhythm. Familiar. Too clean to be noise. Too exact to be anything but intentional.

"Silken Fang..." she murmured.

Not an attack.

A footprint.

She leaned forward, lips tightening. "You knew we'd be watching."

The thread didn't lead anywhere. It wasn't ant to.

It was just a reminder.

In the adjacent chamber, Arven danced with a blade.

Not gracefully. Not beautifully. But honestly.

The combat pod projected phantom strikes-flickers of motion mimicking real opponents. Each ti he parried, blocked, countered, the system responded with force, feedback, and escalating pressure.

[Reflex Response - 82% Sync]

[Muscle Fatigue: Elevated]

[Cognitive Drift Detected - Focus Recovery Required]

He growled and reset his stance.

"Again."

His shirt clung to his back, soaked through. A cut on his cheek from a simulated misstep bled slowly-but he didn't wipe it. He let it remind him.

Fade would've already ended this simulation. Arven wasn't trying to match him. He was trying to survive without him.

Outside the training cell block, Zeyna sat on the edge of the elevated walkway, feet dangling over the edge. Below, the lights of Last Hope shimred like reflections on a cracked mirror. She chewed on a strip of dried fruit absently, eyes narrowed at the artificial stars blinking above.

She hated this sky. It lied.

Her fingers curled slightly. Not in frustration. Not this ti.

She rembered Fade's words.

"I'm not done changing."

She leaned back, arms outstretched behind her. The cold of the tal floor seeped into her skin, grounding her in sothing more real than anything overhead. "Don't keep changing without us," she muttered.

Then softer:"Don't leave us behind."

Darin's room was dark.

Not for drama-but focus.

The only light ca from his interface, where a slowly growing digital journal pulsed with quiet entries.

Entry 37:"Today, Fade left. He didn't ask. Didn't explain. Just... moved forward. Like he always does. I don't hate him for it. But I'm scared that one day we won't be able to follow."

He stared at the screen for a long mont.

Then typed again.

"So I'll learn how to move too. Even if I don't lead. Even if I don't shine. I'll walk."

They all trained.

ditated.

Pushed against their limits.

Not for recognition.

Not for glory.

But because one of them had stepped beyond the known-and none of them wanted

to be the ones left frozen in place when the next shadow ca.

In the quiet halls of Last Hope's second tier, four paths diverged.

All of them, sohow, still orbiting the one who had walked alone into the dark. The training chamber dimd to an artificial dusk-programd to simulate calm rather than cause it. The ceiling above pulsed with soft hues of amber and deep blue, like a sky too clean to be real. Below it, four operatives sat in a loose circle around a recessed fire simulation-no heat, no fla, but light enough to cast flickers on their faces.

It wasn't part of the regin. It wasn't on any schedule.

They'd just... ended up here.

Kaela stretched her legs, half-reclining against the curvature of the padded bench, "Third cycle down," she muttered, looking at the biotric strip on her forearm. "Stamina retention increased. ntal clarity within threshold"

Zeyna groaned. "If I hear one more percentage stat, I'm going to throw this core fragnt into the recycling shaft."

"Wouldn't matter," Kaela replied without looking up. "It's already bonded. You'd be tossing yourself."

Zeyna opened her mouth, then closed it with a small grin. "Okay, fair."

Across from them, Arven sat cross-legged, sharpening his blade with deliberate care. He hadn't spoken much, but the energy around him had shifted. Tighter. More

precise.

"I started hearing it," he said suddenly. "The fragnt. Not in words. Not voices. But... intentions. Like it pushed back until I pushed with purpose."

Kaela nodded. "Resonant Core integration adapts to psychological consistency. When your mind stops hesitating, it echoes your decisions."

Darin leaned forward, elbows on knees. "Mine felt more like... a mirror. Every ti I

slacked off, it showed . Not just in thought-in mory. Embarrassing ones."

Zeyna whistled. "Sounds brutal."

"It was." Darin offered a tired smile. "But I'm not that guy anymore. Not after this.""

They fell into a stretch of silence. Not awkward-earned.

Then Kaela spoke again, more quietly this ti. "Mine unfolded like code. Layers of myself I'd forgotten-uncompressed. I didn't get stronger. I just... rembered how sharp I used to be before all this."

Zeyna glanced at the faint glow on her own wrist. The mark from the fragnt was still there-barely visible, but real. "I didn't feel any of that. No revelations. No echoes. Just one thing." She looked around at the others. "I felt like I wasn't afraid of the next

step anymore."

"Even if it's into the dark?" Arven asked.

She shrugged. "Especially then."

Their eyes t in the low light, no longer just teammates, but survivors of a shared

transformation.

Fade's na hadn't co up once. And yet, his absence was everywhere-in the things

they said, and the strength they didn't have before.

"He'd be proud," Darin said softly, breaking the unspoken pact.

Kaela didn't argue.

Neither did the others.

Instead, they sat together in the hum of recycled air and artificial warmth, four lives

moving forward even in his shadow.

And far below them, past the walls and simulation layers and reinforced dos- One echo drifted outward from the fragnt still embedded in their nervous systems:

[Resonance Level: Stable - Adaptive Traits Embedded]

[Synchronization Detected - Group Cohesion Enhanced] [Secondary Unlock Potential: Pending Shared Threshold Breach]

The light dimd further.

But none of them stood to leave.

The training chamber was quiet now.

Not from fatigue-but reflection.Kaela sat cross-legged near the resonance interface,

the afterglow of the group's synchronized training still pulsing faintly in the air, Everyone had pushed themselves. Harder than ever before.

But it wasn't enough.

Not yet. She tapped her pad again, rerouting the system logs. A sub-directory flickered into

view. Unindexed. Buried deep under private access keys.

"...Fade?" she whispered.

Zeyna looked up from where she had been stretching. "What?"

Kaela didn't answer imdiately. Her fingers danced across the screen, decrypting.

A soft chi.Then-

[Playback Request Accepted - Voice mo Active]

A flicker of static.

Then Fade's voice filled the room.

"If you're hearing this, I've already left. Didn't want a scene. You know ."

The room froze. Darin stopped mid-punch. Arven set his blade down. Zeyna stood slowly, spine straightening like a string pulled tight.

"I don't know what I'll find out there. Might be answers. Might be nothing. But it's a

place I need to go... not for the mission. For myself."

His voice was calm. Not cold-but stripped of anything unnecessary. Pure focus.

"You all have grown. Stronger. Sharper. But don't asure it by what I can do. Or what

I couldn't. This path... it doesn't belong to just . And I don't want it to,"

A pause. Just long enough for them to breathe.

"If I don't co back-don't wait. Don't freeze. Don't break."

"Move."

The recording ended.

Silence returned.

But twasn't empty now. It humd with sothing electric. Heavy.

Zeyna exhaled slowly, her eyes burning-not from tears, but sothing more volatile.

She clenched her fists. "He thinks we'll stall out without him?"

Kaela stood. "No. He's afraid we'll stop growing.

Arven looked down at the floor. "I thought... maybe this was temporary. Like we'd

train, then he'd co back and lead the next mission. Sa as before."

"Well, screw that," Zeyna snapped-not in anger, but in fire. "He's not a leash. And

we're not dead weight."

She turned to the mission board across the chamber. Lights blinked, faint but

insistent.

"We choose now," she said. "Not for him. For us." Kaela walked beside her, already accessing mission protocols.

"Sothing outside the city. Tier 3 clearance. Escort mission plus retrieval," she

muttered. "Minimal system coverage. Could be good field calibration.""

"Or a ss," Arven added. "Perfect," Darin said, standing at last. "Then it's worth doing." Zeyna smiled-tight, determined."Let's give him sothing to co back to."

Kacla selected the assignnt.

[Mission Accepted - Team Registration Logged]

[System Notice - Squad Echo Registered] [Mission Status: Active - Field Deploynt Authorized]

[Note: Operative "Fade" not assigned to this mission]

[Squad Sync Assessnt: Operative Readiness Verified - Multi-node Efficiency

A final pulse of system light shimred across the room.

They weren't chasing his shadow.

They were becoming their own storm.
