Nina’s mother was alive?

Impossible.

But that was what Finn was telling Penny.

"Penny, I barely cald her down," Finn added after his brief yet precise summary of tonight’s events. He glanced at the stairs to check if Nina had finished showering. After taking another breath, he refocused on the call.

"Did you find anything about it?"

"My n lost track of the suspicious woman who approached Nina," Penny replied with a heavy heart. "However, Finn, I don’t think it’s possible. She’s dead."

"I know. That’s what I told her." Finn ran his fingers through his hair again and sat down on the couch. "She also knew that. But... the woman seed legit — that’s what Nina said."

Another deep sigh escaped him as his jaw tightened, thinking of other possible reasons for this situation. There was a mont of silence on the line before Penny spoke again.

"You think it’s part of his plan?" she wondered, stressing each word. "Jonathan."

"That’s the only person who could do this," Finn breathed out. "He knew her. She’s his... ex-wife. It must be his plan."

"..." Penny pressed her lips into a thin line and nodded. "We’re already looking into him, Finn. No harm will co to Nina."

"Penny, I’m putting everyone in your hands," he emphasized. "Please. I know it’s hard to do sothing without compromising anything right now. But we can’t let him have it his way all the ti."

"Who says he’s having it his way all the ti?"

This ti, Finn didn’t answer.

"Finn, if that person gets his way, it’s because I allow him to," she said. "Patience. We’ve been fighting a patient fight, Finn. If he’s taunting us, it’s because he wants one of us to react. Don’t let him have it his way."

His mouth pressed into a thin line, and he rocked his head. Running his hands through his hair again, his shoulders relaxed a little, and he felt slightly at ease. Even so, he couldn’t help but notice that ever since he had embraced this relationship, he didn’t recognize himself anymore.

Back then, a little taunting wouldn’t make him flinch. If anything, he would find so entertainnt in it. But now, even the slightest inconvenience had him calling Penny for help.

Was he really doing things correctly?

He felt a little passive. Sure, it was because he was still recovering. However, the feeling he had since that night on their trip wasn’t a good one.

"Finn," Penny called, her voice stern. "I don’t know what you’re thinking right now. But he’ll have his day. Don’t let your emotions get in the way. Don’t let them beco one."

Finn didn’t answer imdiately. He rocked his head. "I know," he whispered. "I just wish there was sothing more I could do at this point."

"You will once the ti is right," she replied. "Focus on finding out how he got the DNA test results. That’ll be the breakthrough we need."

Moreover, Finn had done more than expected. Atlas wouldn’t have made it to the Pierson Corporation if not for Finn convincing so of the board mbers. The talks of the Miller Company buyout were silenced because of his influence. People might think it was all Zoren and Penny, but Finn had more sway in those situations.

Help wouldn’t have arrived that night on the island if Finn hadn’t stayed behind. Their friends would have been traumatized if he hadn’t made sure they were safe.

"I told you before," Penny said. "Focus on your recovery so you can do more. Until then, I’ll be everyone’s shield. So hurry up and get it together, Finn. I need the Finn I used to know, but this ti, without him letting go of what’s important."

Silence fell on the line before it abruptly disconnected.

Penny slowly dropped her hand, her eyes lifting to et Zoren’s. "I want to knock so sense into him."

"Finn is only human, just like us," Zoren smiled at her as he pulled her arm closer to him. "All of this is very new to him. He used to fight every battle alone, making every call. So, I’m sure he finds it hard to adjust. But he’s a man who can adapt easily. He’ll be fine."

"Co here." Zoren wrapped his arms around her and rested his hand on top of her head. "Everything will be fine. Just like you said, Jonathan might think he’s having it his way... but that’s only because you let him."

Leaning back, he gazed at her proudly. "Just like how you let him run around until the ergency eting at the Piersons. It’s a patient fight, but I know it’s all worth it. Isn’t that why he hasn’t made a move yet?"

"Not yet, but he’s already prepared to kill Nina," she replied. "I told you about that, didn’t I? Nina killed Jonathan in their previous life. How she did it, I’m not sure. But I’ve always known she’s capable of anything. Back then."

Penny’s appreciation for Nina in this lifeti was different. Nina had truly turned her life around and beco a different person than she was.

"I know," Zoren nodded. "But there’s no perfect cri, my love."

He paused as his fingers reached for the hair cascading down her shoulder, twirling a portion of it around his fingers. "He’s going to make a mistake. No matter how small, it’ll be his doom." His eyelids drooped, and a dangerous glint flickered across his eyes.

"When that happens, it’ll only be a matter of who gets to him first," he added quietly, moving the twirled hair to his mouth. "It’s a race... and I’ll win. That’s why I put him within my reach."

"Renren, can we not plan things or talk about heavy subjects while you seduce ?" she blurted out, her mouth falling open at the seductive sight of him. "I’m not sure which one to focus on."

He smirked and pulled her around the waist, his eyes shining playfully. "Focus on . I make a lot of sacrifices during the day, so nights should be mine and mine alone." Zoren caressed her cheek with his fingertips, brushing her hair back as he planted a soft kiss on her cheek.

"I behave during the day so I get rewards at night," he whispered in her ear, biting her earlobe sensually. "And I’m claiming the first reward now. Focus on that."
