Chapter 1688: Chapter 1681: Clash of Worldviews

“Here you go.” After laughing, Hun Jiansi handed the skewer of at she hadn’t eaten to Cheng Ziang.

“I’ll pass for now.” Cheng Ziang waved his hand and declined politely.

“Are you afraid I poisoned it?” Hun Jiansi tilted her head and asked.

“I really have sothing to discuss with you, I don’t have ti to eat this.” Cheng Ziang said helplessly.

“Talk while eating, it’s a local specialty.” Hun Jiansi said with a wink.

“Alright…” Cheng Ziang persisted for a mont and, in the end, was helplessly defeated by Hun Jiansi. He took the skewer from her hand, lifted his mask, and took a bite.

“How is it?” Hun Jiansi asked expectantly.

“If I said it was just average, you would definitely be unhappy. But to ask for your help, I can only say it’s not bad.” Cheng Ziang said frankly.

“You knew I would get mad and still said it.” Hun Jiansi said, squinting her eyes in displeasure.

“But I still thank you a lot, after all, you have sothing delicious and thought of first.” Cheng Ziang said earnestly after pausing briefly.

“Hehe, I knew you couldn’t be that heartless.” Hun Jiansi smiled brightly again after hearing that.

After laughing, she finally returned to her serious deanor and asked earnestly, “So, what do you need from ?”

“That bag of Magic Crystals I gave you last ti, have you used them up?” Cheng Ziang got straight to the point.

“Magic Crystals,” Hun Jiansi was taken aback for a mont, then she reacted, “Oh, are you here to take them back?”

“If you want to keep them, go ahead, I don’t care about the money. But, if there’s any left, I’d hope you could help buy more food.” Cheng Ziang waved his hand and said.

“Buy food, don’t you dislike food?” Hun Jiansi asked gloomily, staring at the skewer in his hand.

“No, it’s not for . I want to buy food to give to those beggars, they have it hard, so many haven’t had a proper al in ages, they’re just skin and bones.” Cheng Ziang said, involuntarily glancing at the slaves begging in the distance.

“You’re going to give to them?” Hun Jiansi widened her eyes in disbelief as if she had heard sothing incredible.

“Is there a problem?”

“I understand you less and less,” Hun Jiansi shook her head with a complex expression, “You hold powerful weapons, have masters in the Nascent Soul Realm, with such abilities, yet why do you frequently show rcy to these lowly ants?”

“If you had sympathy for the Demon Clan, I could understand, after all, they have favored you, but these people are just Kyushu lowlifes, not worthy of your attention.”

Upon hearing Hun Jiansi’s words, Cheng Ziang imdiately frowned, his expression becoming serious, “They’re not lowly, nor are they ants, they’re living people, just like us.”

“You can mock our overflowing kindness, but please don’t stop us from helping these people. I’ve made it clear, whether it’s us, the Demon Clan, or the people of Kyushu or the Shanyue, in terms of human attributes, we are all equal.”

“Perhaps we can’t change everything, but we won’t allow such tragic things as dying of hunger on the streets to happen before us. A gentleman is righteous, not allowing the starved to perish in the streets; a villain is greedy and savage, preying relentlessly.”

“If you’re so righteous, then why carry weapons capable of killing?” Hun Jiansi asked softly.

“Heh…” Hun Jiansi’s seemingly naive question made Cheng Ziang scoff coldly as he turned to face her and asked, “When did this world beco one where demands on good people are so nurous, yet bad people aren’t subject to such requirents? So you think good people should only do good deeds and so need supervision, while bad people would commit more wrongs when pressured?”

“I didn’t an it that way, it’s just that your words make feel so subtle…”

Hun Jiansi lowered her head, a multitude of thoughts swirling. Actually, this wasn’t the first ti the two had fiercely argued along these lines, stemming from a clash of their worldviews.

Cheng Ziang was born and raised on Earth, naturally inheriting its set of beliefs, which are the moral constructs of a modern industrial society.

Even for those who have sinned greatly, allowing them to leave the world with dignity is a moral standard that modern industrial society provides for everyone. Under this standard, most of the moral baselines of human society have been raised.

Thus, the moral views of a modern industrial society often seem unrealistically advanced when compared to those of a feudal society.

However, the moral views of a modern industrial society are themselves an evolution of those from a feudal society, not an opposing relationship, but an inherited one.

Advanced replacing the outdated is an inevitable trend of historical developnt. But without external forces, this process is often quite slow.

The Millennial rule of the Kyushu Dynasty was based on martial superiority, with societal views centered on might makes right. Under this system, the rights of the weak are often difficult to protect.

Even though the current Dongsheng Empire is a united dynasty ruled by Civil Officials for over two hundred years, fighting against a thousand years of martial supremacy is undoubtedly arduous.

Most people living within this system rarely take the initiative to focus on the rights of vulnerable groups. Even Hun Jiansi, who ca from humble beginnings, mostly looks up or evenly without daring to reflect on her own past hardships, and thus not daring to look down on vulnerable groups or et their expectant eyes.

Cheng Ziang’s words to her were more of an awakening than enlightennt, suddenly making her realize the reality of her origins and past experiences.

Cheng Ziang gazed at Hun Jiansi’s pensive posture, feeling a wave of disorientation. He seed to realize his voice had grown stern and tried to soften the atmosphere by clearing his throat lightly, preparing to speak.

“You’re right,” Hun Jiansi suddenly smiled sadly, looking up at him, “It seems I forgot, I too ca from poverty. When I thought I had beco soone important, it seems I forgot these people still live so harshly, and I couldn’t see them…”

“I’m not criticizing you…” Cheng Ziang said, averting his eyes in a bit of a panic.

“I’m glad you scolded !” Hun Jiansi still gazed at him, gritting her teeth as she said.

After taking a deep breath, Hun Jiansi looked away, then said, “But you can’t change anything, you help them today, and they’ll still be hungry tomorrow. Those accustod to hunger, once they eat a full al, will need a long ti to adjust back to hunger. What will you do then, thinking they don’t exist because you can’t see them, is it a bit self-deceptive?”

“So you’re suggesting doing nothing?” Cheng Ziang countered.

“No, I’m saying…”

“Hypocrites are indeed fake, yet they have done sothing, even for their own reputation. But what’s most despicable are those who endlessly preach without taking any real action.” Cheng Ziang said sarcastically.

“After all, it’s your money, you can spend it however you like, spend it all if you want, I will not stop you.” Hun Jiansi said with a wry smile.

“Then you…”

“Tell how you want to spend it, and I’ll help you. I don’t want your money, I want you to owe a favor.” Hun Jiansi looked up and said.

“Thank you.” Cheng Ziang said gratefully.

“Saying thank you doesn’t settle the favor.” Hun Jiansi reminded him.

“I know, it’s just a habit to say that.” Cheng Ziang spread his hands and said.

Hun Jiansi sighed softly, glanced at him, and then suddenly smiled, shaking her head with a sigh she said, “Alright, I’ll arrange to buy so dry food for you, you all stay here and don’t move, I’ll bring the food to you later.”

“Thank you,” Cheng Ziang couldn’t help but say excitedly.

“I don’t want thanks, it’s the favor…”

“I know, I owe you a favor, you can claim it anyti.” Cheng Ziang interjected.

Interrupted, Hun Jiansi gave him a sidelong glance, then turned and left.

Her petite figure quickly vanished into the crowd within ten ters. Cheng Ziang watched her back and suddenly felt a deep sense of befuddlent. The image of Hun Jiansi he had painstakingly built in his mind vanished instantly like smoke.

“Like fog, like wind, like rain, but not like a person at all…” Cheng Ziang sighed deeply, holding his head, he couldn’t help but voice such a sentint as he turned to walk towards his companions.
