Recap of Chapter 64

Milo wasn’t killed by the thing in the forest—it took him. The shadow threaded itself into his veins, turning his body into a cage and his voice into a chorus of screams. Kael and Elena fought to pull him back, but every flicker of Milo’s true self was smothered by the parasite wearing his skin. Now Milo stands against them, movents sharper and stronger than ever, grinning with the shadow’s hunger. Worse still, the storm’s whispers are no longer background noise—they’re growing, and they know things they shouldn’t.

Main Story

Kael’s arm throbbed where the branch had snapped against Milo’s shoulder. His vision blurred with pain, but he couldn’t afford to stop. "Milo, listen to —don’t let it control you!"

The thing in Milo’s skin only tilted its head. A grotesque mockery of innocence. "He’s listening," it whispered, Milo’s lips moving but the voice bending wrong. "He’s screaming. He wants you to hear him, Kael. But he’s very far down."

Its grin widened, showing too many teeth. "And the further you reach... the deeper you’ll drown."

Then it attacked.

Milo’s body was a storm of violence. Every movent was too precise, as though the shadow had rewired his muscles. His hands tore through the air, black tendrils solidifying into claws that cracked against Elena’s blade. Each strike rattled Kael’s bones like a hamr to his chest.

Elena roared with the effort of holding him back. Sparks burst as her sword ground against his claws, the rain sizzling against the heat of friction. She shoved, and for a mont the shadow stumbled. Milo’s eyes flickered brown—human—for less than a heartbeat.

"Elena—don’t stop!" Kael shouted, gripping a jagged rock and charging forward.

He swung it like a desperate club. The rock connected with Milo’s temple, hard enough to draw blood. Milo gasped—his real voice breaking through: "Kael... help—"

Then the shadow surged back, snapping Milo’s head unnaturally upright. His grin returned, blood mixing with rain on his lips.

"Help him?" the thing hissed. "He begged to let him sink. Do you know what that ans?"

Kael froze, heart hamring.

The whispers swelled in the storm. This ti, they weren’t just sound. They tunneled into him, unraveling mories he had buried so deep he thought they were gone.

His mother’s pale face. The sterile sll of antiseptic. Her hand, cold, gripping his as she whispered her last words: "Don’t end up like your father, Kael."

Kael staggered. "No—no, stop—"

The shadow’s grin widened. "She was afraid of you. Of what you’d inherit. Of what you are. And you’ve proved her right."

"Shut up!" Kael’s voice cracked.

Elena shoved Milo back with a furious swing, her blade slicing across his stomach. Black fluid hissed from the wound, only to seal as quickly as it had opened. Milo’s body convulsed, his real eyes flashing through the black. "Elena—don’t... let it... win..."

Her breath hitched. She stepped closer, lowering her guard for just a mont. "Milo, I’m here. I won’t—"

The shadow snapped his body forward, its grin stretching unnaturally as it nearly split his cheeks. "And when you fail, his blood will be on your hands."

It slamd a fist into her chest, launching Elena backward. She struck a tree trunk with a sickening crack, sliding down to the mud. Kael’s blood went cold.

"Elena!"

Her sword lay just out of reach. She coughed, trying to rise, but the impact had stolen her breath. Rain plastered her hair to her pale face, her eyes dazed but burning with fury.

Kael turned back, fury overriding his fear. He charged with everything left in him, slamming into Milo’s possessed body. They both tumbled into the mud, Kael straddling him, fists flying. "Get out of him! He’s not yours!"

For one second—just one—Milo’s real voice scread through the storm. "Kael—please—don’t let —"

And then his body convulsed, his grin returning. Black veins spread across his neck, pulsing with every word the shadow spoke. "You’re drowning with him. And the more you fight, the deeper you sink."

The whispers crescendoed. Kael fell back, clutching his ears. They weren’t just whispers anymore—they were screams.

Failure. Disappointnt. Burden.

Each word struck like a blade.

Kael’s vision blurred as his chest heaved. His mother’s voice, his own sha, his hidden fear—they were all being spat back at him from the storm.

Then a sound broke through it all.

A gasp.

Aaron.

His eyes were open. Wide. Frantic. His body trembled as if every muscle was rejecting itself. He clawed at the dirt, trying to drag himself up. "The voices—they’re everywhere—they won’t shut up—"

Kael stumbled to his side, grabbing his shoulder. "Aaron—don’t listen to them!"

But Aaron’s eyes locked onto Milo’s twisted grin. And the thing in Milo’s skin leaned down, inches from his face, whispering in that chorus of voices:

"You know what they’re saying, don’t you? They’re not whispers. They’re mories."

Aaron froze, his pupils constricting to pinpricks. His lips parted soundlessly.

Kael’s heart plumted. "...What do you an, mories?"

The shadow turned its head toward him, Milo’s body creaking as if it were just a puppet. The grin split wider, jagged and obscene.

"They’re not the forest’s voices."

Its tone dropped, guttural and final.

"They’re yours."

Lightning split the sky. The storm roared. And Kael realized—this wasn’t just a battle for Milo. It was a battle against themselves.
