Alexander suddenly blurted. "Are you on your period?"

Serena’s tears froze in her eyes as she stared at him speechlessly.

"What do you an period? Why would you even think that?" She asked as she threw the burnt eggs away.

Alexander shrugged. "Well, I’ve been reading articles which are centered around females. When a lady has a fluctuating mood, it ans that she is on her period." He replied innocently.

Serena laughed helplessly. She didn’t know if she was to cry or laugh.

"I’m not on my period." She explained.

"Then why did you have fluctuating moods?" He asked.

"Perhaps, because I was sad that you won’t be having breakfast." She answered, then added, "you know what? Forget it, it doesn’t matter. I’m not on my period. Aunty Flo hasn’t visited yet."

Alexander nodded, then studied her expression.

"You look pale. Your eyes are yellow, and your cheeks... they aren’t as chubby as they looked previously." He comnted, a crease forming.

Serena touched her face as she took in his words.

"Are you okay?" He asked carefully.

"You worry too much. I’m fine. I just haven’t had a proper rest because of the bakery." She replied. "We should get going. I rember that you have a eting this morning. You do not want to be late, do you?"

Alexander interlocked his fingers with hers as he pulled her out.

"I’ll drop you off at the bakery first." He said.

But Serena was quick to object. "No. That can’t work. The bakery and your company’s headquarters are in different directions. That would be a waste of ti."

Alexander gave her a pointed stare. "I want to do it." He said. Seeing the firm look in his eyes, Serena couldn’t argue with him anymore.

"I’d also pick you up by 4pm. We both have sowhere to be." He inford, opening the passenger’s door just like a gentleman.

Serena stared at him curiously. "And where would that be?"

"You’d find out when the ti is right." He gave her a mysterious smile.

-------------------

While Serena was thinking hard about where Alexander was taking her, her best friend, on the other hand, was seated opposite a screen, with papers, docunts and folders strewn all over the table.

She clenched her palms into fists, the fingers making a cracking noise as she took a deep breath.

"I guess you have seen how much has been piled over just because you decided to take a three-day break." A very sarcastic voice sounded, and Maya raised her head, her eyes eting with Betty’s.

Maya chuckled mirthlessly. "Well, if soone hadn’t been lazy, she wouldn’t have given her job to do." She fired back.

Betty’s expression darkened.

"What do you an by that? How could I have given my tasks to you?" She demanded, her voice loud but her eyes desperately trying to hide the panic in her.

"Well, you’re the only one who knows. Besides, do you think I’m dumb? Or do you think I spent my leave attending parties, dinners or the spa?" Maya asked with a smile, resting her chin on her palm.

Betty’s eyes flashed as she asked carefully. "What are you trying to say?"

"I’m trying to tell you that..." she gave a long pause, her eyes hovering over Betty who felt that everything was suddenly out of control. "...I wasn’t idle while at ho. I had already finished my quota, sent it to the supervisor. And these papers on this table," she pointed to them uninterestedly. "Do not belong to ."

"Impossible!" Betty shook her head, unable to believe Maya’s words.

"You are free to confirm from the supervisor. She knows best if I’ve turned in my work or not."

Betty’s face turned different shades before it finally settled on red. Maya’s words left her feeling embarrassed.

She glared at Maya for a while, and stord out.

Maya looked at her running, and she scoffed, assuming a nonchalant posture. "She wants to pick up a fight with soone, yet runs away when she’s being confronted." She murmured under her breath, before tossing the papers aside.

A few minutes later, soone walked into the office, her eyes shining and her lips curved upwards.

"Listen up, everyone. Sothing magnificent is taking place downstairs."

Her screams attracted from different heads to be raised. All except, Maya whose focus was fixed on her computer.

"Tell us, Laura. What is it?" Betty was the most eager. Her gaze darted to Maya whose attention wasn’t on them.

"There are two n on the last floor. It seems they’ve co to propose to two different ladies." She paused, assuming a state of mystery. "One is shabby, while the other one is good-looking."

"Who do you think they are here for?" One asked, her expression filled with excitent.

"Why don’t we check it out?" Another said, and they all rose to their feet, excitent written all over their faces.

Maya’s ears perked up as she picked up their feet leaving the office. She didn’t want to leave, but curiosity got the better of her.

She forced herself to her feet as she followed behind them.

"Maya, what are you doing here?" Betty asked omg they were in the elevator.

Maya folded her arms and looked at her with a soft smile. "The sa thing you’re doing. Being curious."

Betty scoffed. "Do you think any of the n are here for you?"

Maya didn’t reply. Seeing that she wasn’t paying her attention, Betty beca silent.

The elevator bell chid open for the down floor as they all filed out into the lobby.

There were gasps, whispers, and excited squeals from the ladies.

Maya frowned as she stood, curiosity finally getting the better of her. She walked into the lobby.

And she froze.

The first man stood awkwardly by the reception desk, clutching an oversized bouquet wrapped in cheap cellophane.

His suit was ill-fitted, his tie crooked, sweat forming at his temples. He shifted nervously as though already regretting his decision.

Then the second man stepped forward.

He was tall, relaxed and dressed impeccably in a dark suit that scread money and confidence. His hands were in his pockets, his posture casual, as though he owned the place.

Cody.

Maya’s breath caught in her throat.
