Alexander’s POV

Her throat moved upwards as she glanced around.

But still, she whispered. "W–Where?"

My reply was imdiate. "My office."

She looked visibly shaken, but I didn’t give her the chance to reply as I walked out. I could hear her sigh before I heard footsteps follow after.

When we finally got to my office, Serena had her hands behind her back, standing at a considerable distance away from .

My heart tightened seeing her step away from .

"You can have your seat." I said to her, gesturing to the chairs as I took my seat.

But she shook her head. "No, thank you. I’m fine standing this way."

My hands which were about to pick up a folder froze, then I looked up at her.

"Are you mad at ?" The question slipped out of before I could stop it.

Serena snapped her head towards and she chuckled. "I can only be mad at you if we had a relationship. We simply have nothing to do with each other."

It felt like I had been punched in the gut. I saw her subtly clench her fingers... she was disappointed, but clearly didn’t want to show it.

"I am sorry." I apologized, rising to my feet. My imdiate reaction startled both and Serena.

"Are you apologizing to ?" She asked, pointing to herself with utmost disbelief.

I nodded, walked away from the desk and approached her. Holding her by her arms, I stared straight into her eyes. "I sincerely apologize for not showing up yesterday as promised."

She broke free of my grip, stepping back in the process, while turning her face slightly away. "I have no right to be angry. It’s just sex."

My chest tightened. Hearing her say ’it was just sex’ with the straightest face tugged a part of my heart I didn’t wish for.

"Serena," I started, my voice dropping lower. "Are you denying the attraction we have?"

She had her hands behind her back as she responded. "Attraction or not, it ends here."

Involuntarily, I took a step back. "You may leave." I gestured towards the door.

She left... without looking back, as though leaving was the best thing that happened to her.

I collapsed on my seat, staring at the ceiling. Looking back, there was no lady I couldn’t get. But Serena — she was different.

God!

She drove crazy.

I tugged at my tie, a dull familiar ache spreading in my chest.

I brought out my phone, and typed a ssage to my best friend, Cody.

[Hey! Are you free to get a drink after work today?]

I needed a drink... or multiple drinks.

His reply was imdiate.

[Sure! But... you’re free to have drinks today. Tell , did your heart get broken?]

I looked at the ssage, and I scoffed, then chuckled. Cody was the type of friend who could lighten my mood up without even trying.

[Oh, I heard about your engagent with Alia. Are you really getting engaged to that brat?]

His text ssage ca once again, and I shook my head before swiftly typing a reply.

[No.]

[Great! You don’t have to worry about the drinks today. I’ll take care of it.]

My brows furrowed as I read his text which ended with a mischievous emoji. I suddenly had a bad feeling.

What was Cody planning?

A sigh escaped my lips. Unwittingly, my thoughts drifted to Serena, and my hands grabbed a fistful of my hair.

"I ssed up." I muttered under my breath as I recalled how she increased the distance between both of us.

She was like a drug. One touch and I was already addicted.

"Darn it!" I shot up to my feet, sweeping away the files from the table.

I was slowly losing control of myself. I didn’t expect that I’d feel so many emotions — jealousy, anger, pain and one which I couldn’t place my finger on — just by being with Serena.

The last ti I felt this way was with my ex... and I was badly hurt.

I collapsed on my chair, the chair bearing the weight of my frustrations. Looking up to the ceiling, a breath escaped from . Things were beginning to beco complicated and I hated that I couldn’t control the situation.

----------------------

After I had forced myself to review so docunts, I decided to leave the company. It felt like a waste of ti since I was unable to focus.

When I reached the parking lot, I saw Serena and her friend, Maya laughing together. Maya whispered sothing into Serena’s ears, and the latter burst out laughing.

My expression softened. This was the second ti I’ve seen her laugh sincerely. The first ti was with that guy called Liam.

She had never laughed this way with ever since I’ve known her. Or is it just that she didn’t want to act that way whenever I’m around? Did I intimidate her? Or was she just guarded against ?

Soon, their ride arrived. I watched them till the car drove away.

Exhaling, I got into my car. Serena was beginning to take up the entire space in my mind.

A part of wanted to follow them, curious to see where they were headed. But another part of wanted to respect Serena’s privacy. She requested it from . The least I could do was to respect her.

With this thought in mind, I drove straight to the city’s most discreet private club, one which was only open to the elites of the cities.

What people didn’t know was that this club was owned by my friend, Cody.

It was a forty-five minutes drive. Once I arrived, the sky had begun to darken. I handed the keys to the valet, and walked in with one hand in my pocket.

The club’s lobby was bubbling with life. I skillfully moved past the dancing bodies, while evading ladies who tried to dance with .

Suddenly, my feet paused. My eyes landed on soone familiar.

"Serena?" I muttered, uncertainty laced in my voice. "What’s she doing here?" I asked under my breath after I was sure she was the one I saw.

She whispered into Maya’s ears, her brows scrunching. She clearly looked uncomfortable.

I was about to approach her when I stopped in my tracks. A very familiar person walked to them.

Liam.
