"Why?"

"Why?"

Damian Rivers and the bodyguard spoke at the sa ti.

"It’s called Demon Season because it’s no ordinary flower. It’s poisonous," Chloe Sterling explained.

"Right, right!" Chase Langdon said. "I rember now. My master said this flower’s poison is insidious. People who are poisoned by it will experience all sorts of hallucinations."

"Ah? Is that so?" The bodyguard looked disappointed. "Never mind then."

Damian Rivers smiled. "So, like they say, don’t pick the wildflowers by the roadside."

Suddenly, Chloe Sterling walked over and reached out to touch the flower.

"What are you doing?" The smile vanished from Damian Rivers’s face, and he stared at her in astonishnt.

Chloe Sterling gently plucked a few petals, each larger than her hand, and gave them to the bodyguard. "The petals aren’t poisonous. You can take a few for your girlfriend."

The bodyguard froze for a second, a little surprised. "...Thank you, Miss Sterling." He took the petals and quickly added, "I’ll take a picture with my phone to show her."

The man happily took a picture, then carefully put the petals away.

This is what couples in the throes of love are like, always thinking of each other.

Damian Rivers glanced at the petals in the man’s hand, a sour feeling welling up inside him.

Noticing him looking at his petals, the bodyguard asked, "Young Master, would you like so? Should I pick a few petals for you too?"

Damian Rivers snapped, "No! What would I do with those?!"

The bodyguard gave a dry laugh. "Alright then."

"Tell when you’re getting married. I’ll give you a big red envelope."

Hearing this, the man’s eyes lit up instantly. "Tha... Thank you, Young Master."

Chloe Sterling walked off to another spot, pocketing the good things she found.

The group spent almost the entire day in the jungle, only heading back in the evening.

Damian Rivers had never walked for so long. His legs were so tired they could barely hold him up, but he gritted his teeth and pretended everything was fine. Once out of the jungle, he got straight into his car and ordered the bodyguards to drive back to their guesthouse in town.

Chloe Sterling calmly entered the courtyard and laid out the herbs she had gathered that day on a table to dry.

Before they left, Damian Rivers glanced at her from inside the car, filled with a sense of admiration.

After putting the herbs away, Jasper Lockwood’s face suddenly appeared in Chloe Sterling’s mind. She’d been in the countryside for two days and hadn’t contacted him yet.

After a mont’s thought, she suddenly walked to her car, opened the door, and got in.

Seeing this, Chase Langdon imdiately asked, "Where are you going?"

Chloe Sterling replied with a straight face, "To town to buy a few things."

With that, she floored the gas and sped off.

Chase Langdon: "..."

Before she even reached town, her phone got a signal. Chloe Sterling pulled over to the side of the road and dialed Jasper Lockwood’s number.

The call connected quickly, and a man’s deep, magnetic voice ca through. "Hello, Chloe."

Chloe Sterling suddenly didn’t know what to say. After a few seconds, she managed, "Have you, uh, gone ho?"

"Not yet," Jasper Lockwood replied. "I’m still at the office."

"Why aren’t you ho this late?"

"I don’t want to go back. I’d just be alone if I did."

After a pause, Chloe Sterling said, "I’ll be back the day after tomorrow."

Jasper Lockwood’s voice was gentle. "Okay, I’ll wait for you. By the way, doesn’t the countryside have no signal? Where are you calling from?"

Chloe Sterling looked at the empty surroundings and replied, "Town. I ca to town to buy sothing."

"So, you only called because you happened to be buying sothing?"

Chloe Sterling: "..."

Over the phone, Jasper Lockwood suddenly let out a soft sigh.

Chloe Sterling imdiately said, "No."

"No what?"

"It’s not that I called you while I was out. I called because I wanted to."

Two or three hundred ters behind her, several bodyguards sat in their car, staring unblinkingly at Chloe Sterling’s car ahead.

"Isn’t the missus going to town to buy sothing? Why’d she stop in the middle of the road?"

"Yeah, what’s going on?"

"The road ahead looks clear. Should we go check it out?"

"Let’s wait a bit longer. If she doesn’t move in five minutes, we’ll go over."

"Okay, we’ll wait."

Ti ticked by, but Chloe Sterling’s car didn’t move. The n felt sothing was wrong and imdiately drove up to her.

Chloe Sterling was still on the phone and was slightly taken aback when she noticed four bodyguards suddenly walking toward her car.

When they reached her, one of the bodyguards tapped gently on the window. Chloe Sterling rolled it down and asked, "Why did you follow ?"

Chloe Sterling was wearing a Bluetooth earpiece, hidden by her hair, so the bodyguard didn’t know she was on the phone. He said, "Ma’am, weren’t you going to town to buy sothing? Why did you suddenly stop in the middle of the road?"

Chloe Sterling was montarily speechless. Then, she heard Jasper Lockwood’s soft chuckle over the phone.

"Is there a problem with the car? Would you like to give you a ride?" the bodyguard asked again.

Chloe Sterling was mortified. "No, thank you!"

"What did you want to buy, Ma’am? I could go get it for you."

Chloe Sterling: "I don’t feel like buying anything anymore. Let’s go back."

"Huh?" The bodyguard looked completely confused.

The tips of Chloe Sterling’s ears turned slightly red as she said abruptly, "Let’s talk after I get back. I’m hanging up now."

Jasper Lockwood’s gentle voice replied, "Okay."

The bodyguards: "..."

’The missus was on the phone!’

’It looked like she was calling the boss. So she didn’t co out to buy things at all—she ca out to call the big boss, and we interrupted her!’

’Is the boss going to want to kill us?!’

Seeing Chloe Sterling hang up the phone, the n felt even more certain that doom was upon them.

One of them imdiately said, "Ma’am, we’re sorry! Please, continue. We won’t disturb you. We’ll just go back to the car. Call us if you need anything."

Chloe Sterling tossed her phone aside and started the car. "We’re going back."

"Don’t!" the bodyguard imdiately said. "Please, keep talking on the phone."

"Yeah, yeah, please continue your call," another chid in.

Chloe Sterling: "..."

Of course, she wasn’t going to call him back now.

For the next two days, Chloe Sterling went back to the mountains to find more wild herbs, which she then brought back to Crestfall.

Damian Rivers had so business to attend to and left early, so he didn’t return with them.

Chase Langdon took Jean Kensington and the baby back to their apartnt.

Chloe Sterling switched cars midway and didn’t go directly back to The Lockwood Residence. Instead, she had the bodyguards take her to the Lockwood Group.

The original plan was to arrive in Crestfall at night, but they had returned early. It was only a little after three in the afternoon, so Jasper Lockwood was still at the company.

Chloe Sterling walked into the building. A security guard recognized her and opened the access gate. Just as she pressed the elevator button, she heard a few people whispering in a nearby corner.

"For real? President Lockwood was drinking with the Eldest Miss Sinclair? No way. It’s obvious President Lockwood doesn’t like her."

"There’s a picture, so it must be true. How could it be fake? Look at the adoring way Eldest Miss Sinclair is gazing at him. It feels like she’s really in love with President Lockwood."

"Please. President Lockwood is tall, handso, and rich. And most importantly, he’s not a player. What woman who likes him isn’t genuinely in love? The key is whether President Lockwood likes them back."
