On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon Chapter 144: Insinuations
Chloe Sterling held the dicine bowl out to the old doctor and said coldly, "Are you sure adding golden peony to this is fine? It won’t have a negative reaction with the other herbs?"
"Golden peony?" The old doctor paused, stunned. "What golden peony? My formula has no golden peony in it whatsoever!"
"Is that right? How strange."
Seeing from her expression that she wasn’t making it up, the old doctor took the dicine bowl, sniffed it, and examined it. His face filled with astonishnt. "This... How could there be golden peony in here? My formula absolutely did not call for golden peony."
He turned to Seth Sutton and asked, "Mr. Sutton, who fetched this dicine and who prepared it? How could they be so careless! You can’t just add golden peony to this."
Seth Sutton looked just as shocked. "One of the maids prepared it. Is there a problem with the dicine?" He looked at the nearby butler and said in a grim voice, "Get Linda in here!"
"Yes, sir." The butler imdiately went to fetch her.
Chloe Sterling watched Seth Sutton, a peculiar glint in her eye. "It’s not entirely the dicine’s fault," she said. "This formula wouldn’t have done much good anyway."
Hearing this, the old doctor was so furious he nearly choked. "If you’re so capable, then why don’t you write a better prescription for us all to see!"
’He had been careless, failing to inspect the dicine Mrs. Sutton was given. But pointing out that there was a problem with it was hardly an amazing skill.’
Chloe Sterling ignored him. She took a small bottle from her bag, removed a single pill, and handed it to Seth Sutton. "Please give this to your wife."
Seth Sutton took the pill and imdiately gave it to his wife.
Serena Lockwood’s sharp gaze landed on the dicine bottle in Chloe Sterling’s hand. ’This isn’t the first ti I’ve seen that bottle,’ she thought. ’When our family’s patriarch was unconscious, it seed he was given this sa dicine.’
She stared at Chloe Sterling, feeling more and more certain that there was sothing extraordinary about this woman.
After giving her the pill, Seth Sutton asked, "Miss Sterling, what kind of dicine is this? What does it do?"
Chloe Sterling’s gaze fell to the frail woman on the bed. "It’s a dicine that will wake your wife very soon," she replied.
Seth Sutton was stunned. "My wife can wake up!"
Chloe Sterling: "Yes."
The old doctor glanced from her to the woman on the bed, clearly skeptical. ’The woman’s in this state. How could she possibly wake up so quickly?’
Chloe Sterling added, "I’ll write a new prescription shortly. Mr. Sutton, you’d best have soone more reliable prepare the dicine."
Seth Sutton nodded. "Alright."
Just then, the butler led in a young maid. She was pretty, but there was a calculating look in her eyes.
The maid glanced at Mrs. Sutton on the bed, then at Seth Sutton, and fell to her knees with a THUD, bursting into tears. "Sir, this has nothing to do with ! I brewed the dicine exactly as it was in the packet. I don’t know what happened."
Seth Sutton stared at the woman, his gaze darkening as he questioned her in a cold voice, "You don’t know what happened? You prepare my wife’s dicine every single day, and you’re telling you don’t know what happened!"
Linda sobbed, "I really don’t know, Sir. You have to believe ."
The butler ca forward with a dicine packet. "Miss Sterling, this is the packet. Can you see if there is a problem with what’s inside?"
Chloe Sterling took the packet, examined it, and said, "There’s no golden peony in this packet."
This ant the golden peony had been added while the dicine was being brewed. Golden peony had a negative interaction with two of the other herbs in the prescription and should not have been taken with them.
Seth Sutton said coldly, "What else do you have to say for yourself!"
A flash of panic crossed Linda’s face, and her crying grew more frantic. "It wasn’t , it really wasn’t! I truly don’t know what happened! Sir, I didn’t harm Mrs. Sutton!"
Serena Lockwood glanced from the maid, Linda, to Seth Sutton. A flicker of shock crossed her eyes, then her expression turned icy. "How dare you attempt to harm your mistress," she said. "Butler, take her straight to the police station!"
"Yes, ma’am." The butler imdiately moved forward.
"No, don’t!" Linda grew even more frantic. She suddenly scrambled to her feet, ran to Seth Sutton, and gripped his arm tightly. "Sir, please don’t send to the police! I didn’t do anything, I swear! Please, believe ."
Seth Sutton’s expression shifted dramatically. He violently shoved her away. "Get off !"
Linda stumbled to the floor. The butler moved to pull her up. "Let’s go."
"I’m not going!" Linda shouted as she struggled. "I’m pregnant! You can’t send to the police! I’m carrying Mr. Sutton’s child!"
As soon as she spoke, the entire room fell silent.
Everyone had already sensed that sothing was going on between Linda and Seth Sutton, but no one had expected him to have actually gotten her pregnant.
Damian Rivers was especially stunned. ’As far as I knew, my aunt and uncle always had a wonderful relationship. My uncle was so gentle and considerate toward her. How could he have cheated?’
Just then, a faint voice spoke up. "Why did you save ... just so I could wake up to watch this?"
Serena Lockwood imdiately rushed forward. "Laura, you’re awake."
Laura Rivers gave a weak, bitter smile. "I’d rather not have woken up. It would have been better to sleep forever."
Serena Lockwood grasped her hand. "Don’t talk like that. You’re going to be fine."
Seth Sutton was startled at first, then he walked over to Laura Rivers and said softly, "Laura, you’re awake. Don’t listen to her nonsense. None of what she said is true."
Serena Lockwood glared at him and said sharply, "Seth Sutton, you owe the Rivers Family an explanation for this! If you and your lover conspired to fra Laura, the Rivers Family will never let you get away with it!" She paused, then turned to Linda and commanded, "Take this little bitch to the police station with the evidence. Have them thoroughly investigate everything she’s done!"
Phoebe Sinclair snorted, adding a pointed remark. "Won from her lowly station will do anything to get ahead. This needs to be thoroughly investigated. Butler, make sure you explain everything clearly to the police."
The butler bowed his head. "Understood."
Damian Rivers shot Phoebe Sinclair a sideways glance, his eyes filled with a warning for her to cut the snide remarks.
Phoebe Sinclair ignored him, her gaze flicking over to Chloe Sterling. In her eyes, Chloe was just as low-class.
Linda struggled frantically. "No! Sir, help ! Sir, I’m carrying your child! You can’t abandon ..."
"Shut your mouth!" Seth Sutton roared, then commanded, "Get her out of here!"
The butler called in two bodyguards, who together dragged Linda out of the room.
Not expecting the situation to devolve like this, Chloe Sterling frowned slightly, a flicker of disgust on her face.
This sort of affair was nothing new in a wealthy family, and the old doctor was unfazed by it. What did shock him, however, was that Chloe Sterling had actually managed to wake Laura Rivers up.
’What kind of dicine did she use? For it to have such a miraculous effect!’
Laura Rivers looked at Seth Sutton, her eyes filled less with disappointnt and more with utter despair. She said in a hoarse voice, "You get out, too. I don’t want to see you!"
"Laura, I’m sorry... I... I had too much to drink that night... I’m so, so sorry..."
"Was it really just that one ti?" Laura Rivers asked.
"Yes, really, just that once. I was just so drunk... I thought... I thought it was you."
Laura Rivers gave a bitter smile. "Thought it was ? I’m hardly that young and beautiful anymore."
Seth Sutton said at once, "Of course you are. To , you’ll always be the most beautiful woman in the world."
Laura Rivers murmured, "Seth Sutton, you put on such a good act. No wonder you’re an actor. I spent half my life believing you."
’Back then, she had ignored the Rivers Family’s objections and insisted on marrying Seth Sutton, a third-rate actor from a modest background. She thought she had found the best man in the world, but it turned out he was simply the world’s best actor.’
