When I returned to the living room from the lounge, I saw Mrs. Sterling on the phone with soone.
Seeing her hang up, I stepped forward. "Thank you for everything today, Mrs. Sterling..."
"You’re too kind, Miss Joyce."
I pressed my lips together. Thinking about how this trip had yielded almost no clues, I asked, "Mrs. Sterling, may I trouble you with a question? After I was helped to the lounge when I was drunk that day, was there a maid who cleaned the room?"
"Well..." Mrs. Sterling frowned, deep in thought.
My heart leaped into my throat.
That maid was the key to breaking this whole case open. If I could just find her, I could find out who the man from that night really was...
For a mont, the living room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Just then, a maid hurried over to announce, "Ma’am, Master Forrest has arrived."
"Master Forrest is here?" As if her savior had arrived, Mrs. Sterling quickly stood up and went to greet him, her face full of joy.
I anxiously stopped her. "Have you rembered anything?"
Mrs. Sterling looked troubled. "Oh dear, there’s just been so much going on. I can’t quite recall."
As I watched Mrs. Sterling go to et Sebastian Forrest, I stood frozen in a daze.
’She can’t recall...’
’That ans I can’t find her.’
But with this lead gone, trying to figure out who the man from the banquet was would be like finding a needle in a haystack.
I’d be a fish on the chopping block, completely at their rcy!
"What’s wrong?"
Sebastian Forrest had walked over to by now, his face filled with concern as he looked at .
I forced myself to pull it together and shook my head at him, then turned to Mrs. Sterling. "I apologize for the presumptuous visit today."
Mrs. Sterling flashed a brilliant smile, glanced at Sebastian Forrest, and then looked back at . "You’re too kind, Miss Joyce."
"Then we won’t disturb you any longer."
As Sebastian Forrest and I started to walk out, Mrs. Sterling quickly said, "Let see you out."
After saying goodbye to Mrs. Sterling, I instinctively turned to get my car, but Sebastian Forrest stopped .
"I’ll have soone drive your car back for you. I’m taking you ho."
"You don’t have to—"
"Be good." As he spoke, Sebastian Forrest gave no room for argunt, pulling open the passenger door and ushering inside.
I instinctively tried to say sothing else, but the door was already closed.
A mont later, Sebastian Forrest got into the driver’s seat and started the car.
Resigned, I had no choice but to fasten my seatbelt.
"What happened today?" Sebastian Forrest’s fingers tapped lightly on the steering wheel as he glanced at . "Why the sudden visit to Sterling Manor?"
My mind was a tangled ss. I had originally planned to keep hiding it from Sebastian Forrest, but then I thought about his resources and abilities. He could definitely find sothing. Asking for his help might be the only way forward.
At that thought, I took a deep breath and began, "Senior Forrest, I suspect that over a month ago, at the Sterling Family’s banquet..."
"Vincent Lombard and Clara Langley... they tampered with my drink..." My voice was strained, and my chest felt like it was being squeezed tight. I couldn’t go on.
Sebastian Forrest stared at intently. "How are you so sure the man was arranged by Vincent Lombard and Clara Langley? What if he was helping you?"
"Impossible!" I shook my head, my voice thick with anger. "Even if he was helping , he shouldn’t have used that kind of thod!"
Sebastian Forrest didn’t seem to expect such a strong reaction from . His brow furrowed slightly as he pressed his lips together. "You hate him?"
"I do!" I practically spat the words through gritted teeth.
Setting aside the fact that he was almost certainly sent by Vincent Lombard and Clara Langley to ruin ...
Even if he wasn’t, there are a million ways to save soone. Why did he have to choose that one?
I would have rather he not ’saved’ at all!
Sebastian Forrest subconsciously tightened his grip on the steering wheel. His gaze remained fixed on , a montary lapse of focus in his eyes.
I noticed the car veering from its lane and was about to crash into the roadside barrier. "Senior Forrest!" I shouted in panic.
That snapped Sebastian Forrest back to his senses. He jerked the wheel hard. The tires let out a piercing screech against the pavent as the car shot forward another dozen ters before finally coming to a screeching halt on the side of the road.
I instinctively glanced in the rearview mirror and saw two curved black marks burned into the road!
"What’s wrong?" I asked, still shaken, looking at Sebastian Forrest. I couldn’t understand why he’d suddenly zone out while driving.
"It’s nothing..." Sebastian Forrest turned to look at . "I was just thinking about sothing."
He looked pale, so I didn’t press him further.
Instead, it was Sebastian Forrest who took a deep breath and turned to . "What do you want to do? Find that man?"
I pressed my lips together. ’Actually, I don’t want to know who the man from that night was. I just want to know if he was sent by Vincent Lombard and Clara Langley.’
"That night, the man arranged for a maid to take care of . I asked Mrs. Sterling about it, but she said she couldn’t rember, and that the maid wasn’t one of the Sterling Family’s staff..."
"Don’t worry. I’ll help you find her."
I couldn’t help but let out a silent sigh of relief and looked at him gratefully. "Thank you, Senior Forrest."
Just having him here filled with an infinite sense of security.
It was as if he wore a suit of protective armor, and just by standing next to him, I could be sheltered from all the world’s storms.
The car started moving again, and a short while later, we arrived at Sherwood Manor.
Perhaps because the day had been so exhausting, I didn’t have the energy to talk to Sebastian Forrest. After we parted, I went straight back to my room.
I lay on the bed, staring up at the ceiling, my thoughts a chaotic jumble.
I don’t know how much ti passed before my phone, which was in my bag, suddenly started vibrating.
I took a deep breath, rolled over, and pulled out my phone. A glance at the caller ID showed it was Chloe Miller.
"Hello..."
"Babe, what’s going on? Master Forrest ran into today and asked why I wasn’t out shopping with you. Did sothing happen? Why’d you have to lie?"
Chloe Miller really is the person who knows best.
She could sll that sothing was off from that one little thing.
So I didn’t hide it from her anymore. I told Chloe Miller everything that happened today, down to the last detail.
"That despicable adulterous pair!" Chloe Miller couldn’t help but curse after hearing my story. "How dare they use such a low-down trick! How can such disgusting people exist in this world? I wish I could chop them into at paste and feed them to the dogs!"
Chloe Miller was clearly furious. After her tirade, she was panting heavily.
"Alright, what’s done is done. Cursing them won’t help. All we can do now is try to minimize the damage and consequences," I said calmly.
’I’ve already had my share of being angry.’
’I’ve even cried.’
’But none of it helps.’
Chloe Miller sighed. "So, what are you going to do now?"
I took another deep breath. "Chloe, I can’t keep this baby..."
