The smile on my face froze, and I clenched my fists almost subconsciously.
I had been so caught up in all the drama these past few days that I’d actually forgotten about this.
I couldn’t help but press my lips together. "I have to do it."
"Alright, then. The procedure is scheduled for nine o’clock tomorrow morning. Please be sure to co to the hospital on an empty stomach."
"Okay, thank you."
After I hung up, Chloe Miller’s expression grew solemn. She had clearly overheard the conversation.
"Chelsea, are you really going to..." Chloe Miller trailed off, looking at my stomach with a pained expression. "We still haven’t found that man from the other night... What if he was just trying to help you, to be your ’antidote,’ and not soone sent by Clara Langley and Vincent Lombard?"
I gave a bitter laugh. "You said it yourself. ’What if...’"
It was a one-in-ten-thousand chance!
How could I possibly be that lucky?
Truthfully, I wished more than anything that I could be that lucky.
’As long as that man wasn’t sent by Clara Langley and Vincent Lombard, I can have this baby...’
’I don’t care who his biological father is.’
But—
"Didn’t you ask Master Forrest to investigate that maid? Why don’t you ask him if he has any news?" Chloe Miller still wouldn’t give up.
I knew what Chloe Miller was worried about.
She was afraid I would regret it.
Because of my uterine adhesions, the doctor had said this child might be my last...
If I had the abortion, it would an I might never get to be a "mother" in this lifeti.
Besides, this baby had been inside for over two months. We were connected by blood; how could I not have feelings for him...?
I was even more reluctant to lose him than Chloe Miller was!
"Okay, I’ll go ask Senior Forrest then."
I wasn’t sure if I was just making an excuse for myself or if I was finally getting a chance to breathe, but I quickly dialed Sebastian Forrest’s number.
"Hello..." A man’s deep, magnetic voice soon ca through the phone.
Sebastian Forrest picked up so quickly that I was caught off guard, freezing for several seconds before I managed to stamr, "Senior Forrest, I wanted to ask about that maid you were looking into for ..."
But before I could finish, Sebastian Forrest cut off. "I was just about to call you. I didn’t expect you to call first..."
My heart tightened. "Do you have news?"
"Mhm." Sebastian Forrest affird. "Are you at ho right now? I’ll co pick you up in a bit, and we can go together."
I quickly shook my head. "No, that’s okay. I’m with Chloe Miller. Just send the address. We’ll go together; it’ll be faster."
I was dying to know what happened on the night of the banquet. I couldn’t stand to wait another second!
"That works too." Sebastian Forrest didn’t object. "Then I’ll see you in a bit."
"Okay, see you in a bit."
As soon as I hung up, a ssage from Sebastian Forrest arrived on my phone.
Chloe Miller had already grabbed her car keys and was heading for the door.
But now, I was the one who felt nervous.
Chloe Miller ca over and took my hand, comforting softly, "Don’t be scared. It might not be bad news!"
"Besides, Vincent Lombard and Clara Langley haven’t released any video, which must an they don’t have one. Otherwise, given how shaless those two are, how could they possibly not use it to get back at you?"
I nodded instinctively, not sure if I was responding to her or just psyching myself up. "You’re right."
"Then let’s go."
...
The address Sebastian Forrest gave us wasn’t far, but by the ti we arrived, a black Maybach was already parked there.
"Miss Joyce."
Just then, Henry Paxton approached us with a respectful expression. "President Forrest asked to wait here for you."
I nodded quickly. "Thank you."
Soon, Chloe Miller and I followed Henry Paxton upstairs.
It was a perfectly ordinary apartnt building. I didn’t know if the maid owned or rented this place, but in a city like Kington, where every inch of land is as precious as gold, owning an apartnt like this was far beyond the reach of an average wage-earner.
When the door opened, I saw Sebastian Forrest turn to look at . Standing beside him was a short, middle-aged woman.
I recognized her instantly as the maid who had cleaned the room and taken care of after the banquet.
"It really is you!" I exclaid, stepping forward excitedly.
The maid seed startled by my excitent and subconsciously took half a step back.
I then realized I was being too emotional. I took a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down.
"Do you... rember ?" I asked cautiously.
The maid pressed her lips together. "I do..."
A wave of relief washed over , and I quickly asked, "Do you know who sent you to take care of that day?"
She shook her head. "I’m not sure about that. I just accepted a job that told to clean the room and take care of you until you woke up."
I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed.
’But it’s okay if I don’t know the man’s identity. I don’t really care about that anyway.’
"Then when you were cleaning the room, did you see any caras or recording equipnt?"
The maid shook her head. "There was nothing like that."
Unconvinced, I pressed, "Are you sure?"
"I’m absolutely sure. It took over an hour to clean that room. I checked every single corner carefully. There was definitely nothing like what you’re describing!"
Perhaps it was the final wave of relief, but my legs suddenly felt weak.
"Careful..."
Beside , Sebastian Forrest reacted instantly, grabbing my shoulders to steady from behind.
The maid couldn’t help but duck her head with a little smile, as if she was embarrassed.
"Thanks, I’m okay..."
My heart was soaring. I felt like I needed to throw my head back and laugh to release all the excitent welling up inside .
I knew it—
That man really was just trying to be my ’antidote,’ just as Chloe Miller had said! He wasn’t sent by Clara Langley and Vincent Lombard!
No news could have made happier!
"This is great!" Chloe Miller cheered along with . "I told you! I was right, wasn’t I?"
"Mhm." I nodded happily.
After thanking the maid, we all went downstairs together.
"Senior Forrest, thank you for everything today."
Sebastian Forrest smiled. "Didn’t I tell you? You don’t have to be so formal with ."
I shook my head, my voice filled with emotion. "You have no idea how important this was to !"
’I can’t even imagine what would have happened if I’d actually gone through with the abortion and lost this child...’
The smile on Sebastian Forrest’s face faded slightly. "If you really want to thank , I suppose there is a way..."
I nodded eagerly. "Is there sothing I can help you with?"
But Sebastian Forrest shook his head. "No."
"Then what is it?"
Sebastian Forrest’s deep, dark eyes t mine, but he didn’t answer directly. Instead, he said mysteriously, "I’ll tell you later."
