Chapter 650: What It Felt Like (Ch.651)
"Veah, are you certain this is the right way to go about this?" Everon asked Neveah uncertainly.
Neveah sat calmly in Imagor’s study, going through a scroll in silence. Imagor, Kirgan and narx left a short ti ago to see about so affairs and Neveah remained in Imagor’s study, awaiting the nightfall.
It would not be wise for her to show her presence around Dragon Keep and so Kirgan had advised Neveah remained in Imagor’s study till the ti was right.
Neveah breathed a quiet sigh, she placed the scroll down before lifting her gaze to Everon.
"Do you have a better idea? We cannot prevent the council from seeking an explanation if they find out, soone will have to be their target... none of you are suitable for this." Neveah pointed out the obvious.
"Rather than that, the King’s guard could retrieve it on their authority, irrespective of the council’s protest. The council will not dare be rude to the King’s guard, they will have to retreat." Everon suggested in concern.
"Indeed. But the King’s guard stands in place of royal authority in these tis. If they co under question, or there is internal discord between the council and the King’s guard, do you reckon the tributary races will stand by and watch?" Neveah asked Everon directly.
"I know, but..." Everon began to argue.
"Ron, listen... this is not an opportune mont to jeopardize the King’s guard in any way or form. With Xenon..." Neveah trailed off for a mont and then she cleared her throat lightly.
"With Xenon and Cassian away, the authority of the King’s guard is sorely affected with just the presence of three... their unified decision could possibly overrule the council, but at this point, if the King’s guard acts questionably, it will not favour the Stronghold in any way." Neveah said in a serious tone.
"I ca to aid Jian, not to create greater tension in these uncertain tis." Neveah clarified.
"I do not see how to pit yourself against the Council is the right way to aid Jian. Jian himself will not approve of this." Everon pointed out obvious.
"Only when he returns...can he disapprove of my actions. They would have to return first... otherwise, what does it all matter?" Neveah murmured.
She got up to her feet and headed to the door.
"Co on now, Veah. Where are you headed?" Everon asked with a quiet sigh.
"I won’t go below this level." Neveah assured Everon.
"Then... make sure to keep calm and not worry too much, things have been calm recently but we can never be too careful, I will co looking for you in a short ti." Everon reminded Neveah.
Neveah understood Everon wanted her to be cautious of her emotions due to Devirld.
Devirld had not surfaced much since the water source and Everon constantly marvelled at it, Everon’s diagnosis was that Devirld may have been slightly exhausted or sothing of that nature but whatever kept him silent, Neveah was grateful for it.
Neveah stepped out of the study and walked down the hallway of the second level.
Her pace was slow as she walked on, lost in her own thoughts.
Neveah did not contemplate on where she was headed and just let her feet guide her until she glanced around a mont later, only to realize she was just a few steps away from the door to narx’s quarters.
It was not even surprising to Neveah, this was the only place on the second level she had been able to call hers, albeit for only a short ti. It was certainly one of the few places in Dragon Keep she had felt most at peace.
But now, there was no such place for her in Dragon Keep anymore.
Neveah breathed a quiet sigh, and was about to turn around but the door to narx’s quarters ca open and Adrienne stepped out.
Adrienne was clearly surprised to see Neveah there. And she just stared at Neveah with a startled look, like she had been caught doing sothing she should not have been.
Neveah sensed another presence and her gaze moved from Adrienne to narx’s doorway before it moved back to Adrienne.
’There is soone in there... and it is not narx.’ Neveah’s wolf thought to Neveah.
It seed Adrienne was about to begin explaining but Neveah did not care for it. She sensed no danger, it was soone familiar...and so, it was no business of hers whatever happened in these halls.
Neveah said nothing, she turned around and headed back the way she had co.
This ti Neveah’s walk led her around a path of the second level she had not taken often, and in a short ti, her foot hovered over the first step of the short stairwell leading up to the highest level.
Neveah hesitated for a mont before she carried on, taking slow steps until she arrived at the highest level.
Neveah just stood in place at the end of the stairwell, staring down the dimly lit hallway.
The atmosphere on this level was different, so much so that it gave Neveah pause.
Neveah was not even certain if it was a good difference or otherwise, it was just... different.
’Was it always so...desolate?’ She wondered
Neveah could not recall, she had only been in these halls on very few occasions.
There was a greater chill bouncing off the walls, like winter had dawned in the blink of an eye and Neveah resisted the urge to wrap her arms around herself, or retreat back the way she had co.
Everywhere else in Dragon Keep was at least habitable, but this level was different... Neveah knew if even she found out it chilly, it would be difficult for a human to even survive in these halls.
’Was it always this way...or are these walls also protesting his absence?’ Neveah wondered.
Neveah had heard rumours, that the Dragon Keep lived and breathed the fla essence of the Dragon King.
His presence ward this cold, dreary, mountainous castle and his absence...
"This is what it felt like..." Neveah murmured to herself
