Chapter 619: Not Always a Task (Ch.620)

"Asrig...you an, the...Asrig?" Neveah said in surprise at Jian’s request.

Jian nodded, and heaved a quiet sigh. In that one sigh, Neveah could sense the many conflicted emotions Jian held towards his brother.

Pain, love, disappointnt... regret, the emotions were too many, too complicated for Neveah to fully decipher it all,

But the few she had deciphered, she could sense them clearly... was this her sensing them, or was she feeling them for herself?

Neveah’s brows furrowed slightly at that thought, it was difficult to tell in this mont as Jian’s composure was imdiately restored, every emotion fading away to leave his usual blank, unreadable expression.

’He is accustod to hiding how he feels about everything...it happens even without his notice, burying his emotions without giving himself a chance to truly feel them.’ Neveah thought to herself.

"Asrig, my predecessor... and my brother. Yes, Veah... the Asrig." Jian confird in a low tone.

Neveah knew Jian did not speak much of his brother, it was not Jian alone who would not speak anything of it, but practically no one did.

Had narx not spoken of it to Neveah, she would never have known of the existence of Asrig even till this very mont.

Neveah did understand why Asrig was not a na to be spoken of, no one would tell her exactly what had happened in those tis, no one even dared speak of it.

Though she did not know so much of what had happened before the overthrow, she did know Asrig’s rule had almost destroyed the stronghold from within... tearing it into many parts.

But not the stronghold alone but Jian too, narx had made it clear, that none was more afflicted by that rule than Jian himself.

’He must have suffered terribly, to watch his own brother ruin the world he and their father cherished the most...having no choice but to make an enemy of his brother for the stronghold and its people...being unable to mourn the loss of a kin who had beco a sinner...’ Neveah thought to herself.

Neveah recalled she had been the one to witness Jian lose control of his flas in Asrig’s unmarked morial.

’Just how much pain does he hide?’ Neveah thought.

Neveah found herself wishing for a day where Jian would trust her enough to share this darkness with her...but then again, just how much of her own darkness had she shared with him?

It was a nagging thought that left a sting in its path.

"The rider council cannot know of this, they will make it difficult for you to access the records without a royal decree... Asrig’s records and writings are... frowned upon by my kin." Jian revealed to Neveah hesitantly.

"I understand. If it is what you need, I will go to Dragon Keep myself and fetch it." Neveah assured Jian in a determined tone.

Jian’s gaze moved to Neveah, a small smile settled on his lips. He turned to face Neveah, taking her other hand also.

"I have yet to place a crown on you, yet I burden you so much... with Dune City, the stronghold, the Contagion and now, to take a risk against the rider council...I cannot even bring Xenon to you at this mont, I do not know what it is I can do for you..." Jian began in a pained tone.

"I swear to you, being my woman will not always be so... tasking." Jian said, his tone betraying the guilt he felt for everything that had happened so far.

’You are right...we cannot let him discover that Devirld is so much stronger than before... that we struggle for control each day, it will hurt him too greatly...’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her, finally speaking up

’I do know it.’ Neveah thought back to her wolf.

Neveah smiled slightly at Jian’s words, lifting a hand to rest against his cheek.

"You are the last man in the world I would have expected to care for... Creator knows how much I detested you..." Neveah murmured, chuckling quietly at the thought.

Jian winced visibly at Neveah’s words, even though he knew they were not ant to hurt him, he could not help the sharp pang.

"But Jian, now...you and I are inevitable, and it is not a crown that proves that, not the glory or titles that co with it...it is this..." Neveah’s hand moved down to rest over Jian’s heart.

"This right here that beats for , that is the greatest gift. I have been blind, but now I know clearly... what losing you feels like..." Neveah trailed off,

"I have had a taste of it, it is a sour and bitter pain, that is what I cannot bear. So if being yours is tasking, then let it be so. I am no fragile woman, Jian... I am Neveah Vairheac, I can take a little strain...to , you and Xenon both are worth everything..." Neveah said, her tone thick with emotions.

Jian placed a hand over Neveah’s hand on his chest, his eyes that gazed down at her were filled with warmth and adoration at her earnest confession.

"It does...beat for you..." Jian said quietly,

Neveah smiled, it was a perplexing situation, that he was so close at this mont yet she knew he was still so far away.

And at any mont, she would awaken to that reality...

Like the universe had heard her thoughts, a familiar voice echoed in Neveah’s head.

’Veah...’ Elle called.

Neveah winced visibly at how loudly echoed Elle’s voice was in her head.

"What is it? Are you okay?" Jian imdiately asked in concern.

"I... I think Elle is trying to wake

up...but do not concern yourself, it would not matter if I am asleep a little longer..." Neveah said to Jian, quickly shaking her head to reassure him.

’Veah...there has been another death...there is chaos here in Scabbard. Dante and his father are at odds, I do not know what to do...’ Elle’s voice echoed again,

Neveah’s gaze furrowed slightly at Estelle’s words.

"Tell , Veah..." Jian could tell Neveah knew more.

"There seems to have been another death to the contagion..." Neveah trailed off, leaving out the part of the riots as she could not explain that she was the reason for them yet.

"Then you must return now, they will need you. The days are not long in the dinsional planes...I will wait for you to co to

again." Jian reassured Neveah.

"But..." Neveah began to argue.

"Veah, be good now. I also need to return, I must begin seeking Xenon out through our bond. I do not know if I will be able to reach him across a dinsion,"

"But if there is anyone amongst my King’s guard I can still reach through our mind connection, it will have to be Xenon." Jian said to Neveah, nodding to Neveah.
