Chapter 536: Nothing Certain (Ch.537)

"My Lord, are you sure about this?" Leon asked Azkar uncertainly as a portal spun to life before them.

The large tear in space revealed a terrain cloaked in a swirling dark mist, completely concealing what lay beyond it.

But to summon a portal of such precision, this destination was clearly well known to Azkar.

Azkar thought over the question for a mont, there were not many things in his long lifeti he had done because he was sure of,

And there equally were many things that Azkar did do which he could not have if he had waited for certainty.

There was hardly anything that was ever certain...there was a ti Azkar had been certain his kind were supre and all powerful, indomitable.

He had believed their reign would last till the end of ti, that no one would be able to stand against them... Azkar would have been willing to bet his life on it.

Before the uprising, the dark empire was unchallenged, it was ant to always be so...they had done everything right, or so Azkar had thought.

Azkar had soon realised how wrong he had been when he watched every last one of his kind brutally slain by the dragons, annihilated till there were barely any of them left as far and wide as the stronghold was.

And those who did live were scattered across the stronghold, forever cursed to live in the shadows, forever in hiding because a step into the light would an death.

How certain was certainty itself? Everything in life was a risk, every step was taking a chance, there was nothing written in stone, even fates could be changed and rewritten.

There was no path that was sure, there was no destination that was promised, life could not be predicted and whatever begun would have it’s end.

All one could do was attempt to lower the risks as much as possible with adequate preparation and Azkar had done that, he had done nothing but that for centuries.

"One cannot be assured in every step. Now that the dragons have discovered Devirld’s presence, they will attempt to extract it... the dragons know, just how dangerous Devirld is, even to it’s host."

"And no one knows this better than the Dragon King himself." Azkar asserted.

"He has avoided his fate with Devirld this long, but for her sake...he will accept Devirld, if only to spare his bonded from Devirld’s tornt."

"If Devirld falls into the hands of King Jian, then all we have worked so hard for will beco futile." Azkar said, his brows furrowed into a frown.

Now that Azkar was calm, he was finally able to appraise the situation carefully and with a clear mind.

Thinking about it, Azkar found the girl was even more intriguing now... now that she held the heart of the noblest dragon in existence.

The Dragon King would have a weakness now, a weakness that was within Azkar’s reach, was this not a fitting turn of events?

But first, there were loose ends Azkar had to ensure were securely tied up.

Devirld was the key to recovering their place in the stronghold and without Devirld, it would take centuries more to find another way.

As long as Devirld remained in Neveah’s hands, it would be within their reach but if Neveah was allowed to relinquish the weapon to it’s true host, then they would be at the losing end.

"We cannot allow the Dragon King to take hold of Devirld’s power...with Devirld, Agardan was unstoppable. Magic in the hands of dragons is a mistake we never should have allowed to happen..." Azkar said, his tone deep and thoughtful.

"Devirld’s bond will grow stronger every event Neveah wields it. For every ti she summons it’s forbidden power, it’s imprint on her soul deepens..."

"The dragons will restrict her use of Devirld, to prevent it from bonding irreversibly, to prevent a repeat of what has happened in the past." Azkar continued.

"But in the face of danger, will she truly be capable of turning a blind eye? Would she be able to withhold giving into Devirld’s urging?"

"I would like to see for myself... just what path she will choose to take... what will be of greater importance? Her own safety, or that of the stronghold?... She is, Dragon Queen after all." Azkar murmured, a small smirk on his lips.

"Then we must stir trouble, grave enough that Devirld will be unleashed. The tighter the bond, the greater the risk of severing it...if Devirld becos deeply entwined with her soul, will the Dragon King dare risk her life to severe it?" Leon also murmured in understanding.

"It has been a long while since Fort Blazed and the troll golem, it is ti to remind the dragons that we are still here... waiting, watching...we will always be here. Where there is light...there surely is darkness." Azkar said, his eyes glinting with malice.

"But you have long avoided going back there, will you be able to withstand it?" Leon asked in concern.

"Whatever has beco of it, it is my place of birth...it is my ho, this is a fact that will never change. All I do... I do for my people’s cause..."

"So I might one day be able to stand before them with my head held high, and present to them... the downfall of our enemies." Azkar whispered.

"What am I to do?" Leon asked dutifully.

"Stay behind... keep an eye on things. This ti... I will visit our holand and pay my respects to my people." Azkar said, nodding to Leon.

Azkar stepped through the portal, with no ounce of hesitation. The surge of magic passed quickly and soon the forest was gone and Azkar stood in the embrace of the dark mist.

A low groan rumbled in Azkar’s chest as he felt his magic surge within his veins, rising in acknowledgent of it’s birth place.

Azkar tilted his head back slightly, his eyes going closed.

"The heart of the dark lands...it is as beautiful as it always was." Azkar murmured.
