Chapter 527: The Woman At His Side (Ch.528)

"Lieutenant Vairheac." The city guards on patrol greeted as Neveah rode up to the gates of their base.

One of the city guards quickly took the reins of Neveah’s horse and Neveah nodded gratefully as she dismounted.

"It is already late, shall I keep your horse on standby?" The city guard asked to know if Neveah would be leaving not long after.

Neveah thought over it for a mont, glancing up at the sky. A good number of hours had gone by, it was late evening now.

About this ti, she would be rounding up her duties for the day to return to the castle lest her father lanted her scarce presence.

But this ti, Neveah had only co out to city guard precisely because it was this late and the streets would be cleared out by this ti, since the lockdown had not been lifted just yet.

Neveah still was not in the mood to et the questioning eyes and curious whispers from the citizens of Dune City, enough ti had passed and everyone would have heard of what happened at the barrier already.

There was no doubt Neveah would be the topic of discussion and would remain so for a long while too.

But there were duties that still required Neveah’s attention and she found it more suitable to see to them at this ti of the day...at least till the city was fully settled down.

There was also the fact that Neveah was not prepared to face anyone in Dune Castle, particularly two who she knew would be awaiting her decision.

Neveah hoped by morning, she would have an answer to her doubts.

"You can take her to the stables, I will be here for a while." Neveah instructed,

She rubbed her temples lightly, the nagging ache in her head was hard to ignore but it had eased up considerably already.

"Send word to the commander, I wish to see him." Neveah passed her ssage across to the city guard.

Neveah walked through the gates and across the courtyard, heading for her office which was beyond the training grounds.

Getting to her office, Neveah was not at all surprised to find a reasonable pile of files already waiting for her.

The sudden lockdown would surely have affected a lot of businesses and protocol demanded the city guard saw to whatever issues or discords had been stirred due to an ergency situation.

Neveah groaned quietly as she pulled her hair up so it would stay out of her way,

She took off her outer coat and strapped it over the chair before she took a seat.

Neveah picked up the first file and flipped it open, reading through the report slowly before she noted down her orders on a smaller parchnt which she attached to the file.

Neveah worked through one file to the other, losing track of ti.

A knock sounded on the door so ti later and Neveah did not need to glance over to know it was the commander.

"Lieutenant, you sent for ?" The commander of the city guards asked as he stepped into the office.

Neveah nodded, placing her pen aside, she gestured for the commander to take a sit across from her.

"As you know, we have received orders to track down the trade of adamantium ore... and our failings considered, we still have our duty to see to." Neveah began, referring to losing the rchant which was their only source of intel.

"I am not one to believe there is any perfect plot, everything leaves a trace. If the rchant truly ca here to trade adamantium, he must have an intended buyer..." Neveah said.

"Certainly, adamantium is not sothing just anyone would dare purchase." The commander agreed.

"Then there is soone else we still have within reach. Especially now with the city under lockdown. Beginning from his intended housing... the inn he was to use to market his goods as a cover for his true intent, find out everything you can."

"Have soone trusted infiltrate the black market, it is about ti we close it up for good. But there is no hurry, keep an ear... I do not believe there will be no links."

"Look into it on both ends, but discreetly. We do not wish to alarm our target lest we lose another lead." Neveah said to the commander.

"I understand, I will see to it imdiately." The commander said with a small bow.

He got up to his feet and made to leave, but then he hesitated for a mont.

"Commander... I will not be entertaining questions about what happened at the barrier. See to it that your n refrain from making unnecessary enquiries." Neveah made clear before the commander could speak.

"Of course, lieutenant." The commander agreed.

"I was just going to say... thank you. Dune City is all the better with you here, I hope to serve by your side for a long ti." The commander said, he bowed again before he took his leave.

Neveah stared after him for a short mont, the commander’s words settled heavily, because those were the exact doubts Neveah harbored.

Dune City would be fine with or without her, Neveah knew this for certain. But this was the very first place that had truly felt like ho to Neveah all her life, would she be fine without Dune City?

Lieutenant Vairheac was a free spirited, loyal and beloved leader. A respected dune enforcer, a protector.

It was everything Neveah had wanted for herself and even more.

Queen Neveah was the death of Lieutenant Vairheac.

What would Queen Neveah be? And would she be worth the sacrifice?

Neveah breathed a quiet sigh, shaking off her thoughts, she returned her attention to the files on her desk and continued her work.

Perhaps a few hours passed before Neveah had gone through all the files, Neveah’s eyes grew heavy and she laid her head down on the desk where she soon drifted off to sleep.
