Chapter 455: Severed (Ch.456)
"Promise
this one thing...if ever your heart wavers, if ever there is the slightest doubt in your heart...be sure to let
go." Neveah murmured in a low tone.
These were the exact words she had said to narx on that day, she had not expected that it would all co to be exactly as she had predicted.
’My greatest flaw is knowing my own fate well enough, yet I still try anyways.’ Neveah thought to herself.
narx shook his head, his eyes reflected his unwillingness and disagreent but the finality in Neveah’s tone was clear to all ears.
The council and everyone around them had beco a forgotten matter at this point, when it ca down to it, this fate and this path shared by them both.
"You also promised
that you would not let go of my hand." narx insisted, grasping at straws.
"And I ant every word... I have only ever thought of holding on, Narx. But what more is there to hold onto when I know your heart has wavered?" Neveah asked quietly.
"Veah, I..." narx began to deny but Neveah cut him off.
"Narx... I know you, even better than I know myself. I know your heart... and I know your doubts and if I didn’t know it, your scale has made it clear enough."
"For every pulse of pain, I knew it was a mont when your heart wavered and so I felt it all the more. Can you swear to
that it is not so? That I have understood it wrong?" Neveah asked.
narx was silent, but Neveah did not wait to get an answer from him. She was certain he knew it as well as she did, and if he did not, what did it matter?
It was not even in this mont but at the cliff where Neveah made up her mind. For soone he so desperately tried to save, how could Neveah bear to withhold her chance at life?
narx hoped Adrienne would live, he wanted her to live because death was a finality he could not change and regrets were a pain that scarred the heart for a lifeti.
Regrets that she would die before he ever got to be sure that their bond was not ant to be.
For a man she had co to know better than she knew her ownself, how could Neveah not know his heart?
Even if he did not yet know it clearly, even if he convinced himself otherwise for Neveah’s sake, how could she watch him put a blade through his own heart in the na of his love for her?
What then did that make her... and her love for him? A burden? A source of pain? A reminder of what was lost?
Neveah’s eyes went closed and she ntally reached for the bond in her subconsciousness, the ties that linked her to narx.
narx did not realize yet what Neveah was doing and Neveah knew if she did not take the step now, she would never be able to.
As it was, narx’s scale was completely agitated, pain radiated from it with every breath, it was practically killing her, still yet, it was so difficult to entertain the thought of letting go.
Even when each pulse of pain was a reminder that narx’s heart wavered, it still took every ounce of will in Neveah to choose this end...to choose to let go of one of the few good things she had.
Their bond had once been a vibrant strand, pulsing with life and vigour, growing with each passing mont, but now, it already looked dull and weary. All by itself, it was already greatly weakened.
It was ironic how a chosen bond was the one bond that had felt the most real, the most sincere and the most precious to Neveah all her life, yet while Neveah could never get rid of Alessio’s bond even if she had desperately sought to, narx’s bond was so easily broken...
How was it that she was so helpless with the mate bond but she knew exactly how to severe narx’s bond?
A gasp of pain escaped Neveah as she ntally severed the ties to release narx’s scale.
Pain unlike anything Neveah had ever felt before exploded through her and narx’s eyes widened as he realized what Neveah had done.
"Veah!" narx exclaid in horror and devastation but Neveah stretched a hand out to keep him from coming any closer.
Lords Rodvan and Coran moved, blocking narx’s path from Neveah so she was not interrupted.
"I, Neveah Vairheac of the White Dunes severe my bond with Lord narx of Ruby Scales. I relinquish all titles and honors associated with this bond, and return what has been given... fla and scale." Neveah whispered quietly.
Neveah could distantly hear narx’s protest, but her vision had grown blurry and her senses dimd from the pain.
Perhaps he had been restrained to keep him from getting to her, perhaps he and the Dune Dragons had gotten into a fight.
Neveah could not tell, she could only lean against Kaideon for support as wave after wave of pain crashed through her.
The sa scorching feeling she had endured to accept narx’s fla, the sa searing pain to accept his scale, Neveah relived it all again, this ti as one, blended together as the bond was severed.
Pain was a strange thing, it was all Neveah had known across two lifetis, yet as much as she should have been accustod to it, it still hurt terribly...
As much as she should have been able to restrain herself, to bear through it with gritted teeth, it was beyond her now.
As great and strong as Neveah’s will was, it shattered right before her eyes and there was nothing she could do to stop it,
A tortured scream tore out of her, shaking the very walls of the audience hall, and that was the last thing Neveah rembered before she blacked out.
