Two middle-aged n approached the first patrol officer on the scene to understand the situation.

Old Hunter scanned the area. When he saw Dean, a flicker of light sparked in his otherwise dull eyes. He walked over and asked, "Dean, found anything?"

Dean briefly described the situation:

"We had just located Barnaby's house when we encountered the explosion.

"His mailbox was stuffed with letters; it seems he hasn't been back here for several days. But soone installed a detonation device in his house, and Carlo and I ended up being the unlucky ones caught by it.

"Carlo was injured and has been taken to the hospital."

Upon hearing this, the flicker of light in Old Hunter's eyes faded.

He grimaced. "I was just in the office sorting out so files when I received a call from Deputy Chief Hank and rushed over here in a daze. Now, we're both in for it."

The influential people in the wealthy district were not to be trifled with.

Although this place wasn't a genuine community of the super-rich, the hoowners here were prominent figures in various Los Angeles industries. For such an atrocious incident to occur, a captain would be the perfect scapegoat.

Old Hunter didn't spell it out, but the look he gave Dean was filled with reproach, clearly feeling that Dean had dragged him into this ss. He regretted even more listening to Dean's nonsense and agreeing to let him join the investigation.

This might even affect my pension.

Dean noticed Old Hunter's hesitant expression, and a hint of disdain flickered in his eyes.

Wants the credit without taking any of the risks. Useless as a mound of mud that can't support a wall. No wonder he's still a bit player after all these years.

Dean didn't waste any more words on that.

He pulled out a cigarette, stuck it between his lips, and pointed at a middle-aged man he didn't recognize. "Is this guy the Deputy Chief Hank you ntioned? Why don't I rember him?"

The Detective Bureau held a special status, overseeing several departnts. A deputy chief's rank was higher than that of a precinct chief, so it was impossible for Dean to have no recollection of him. This likely ant the man hadn't been deputy chief for long.

Indeed, although Old Hunter was annoyed by Dean's troublemaking and his attitude, he still made the introduction. "Yes, that's Deputy Chief Hank. He was just parachuted into the Detective Bureau. Seems he has so backing, and he's been busy lately looking for an opportunity to stir things up."

Dean nodded thoughtfully.

The pie of power is only so big; if one more person takes a slice, others get less.

No wonder this guy was so proactive. Even Old Hunter hadn't received any notification from the departnt, yet Hank had already gotten wind of it. He was clearly leveraging Dean and Carlo's involvent in the case to insert himself.

As they were speaking, Hank and the deputy chief of the district police station finished their inquiries and turned their gazes toward Old Hunter and Dean.

Hawk-nosed Hank beckoned Old Hunter over.

Old Hunter sighed and motioned to Dean. "Let's go. Deputy Chief Hank seems very interested in you. He asked a lot about you on the way here; he probably won't give you a hard ti."

"Interested in ?"

A spark lit up in Dean's eyes.

He seed to have guessed the other party's affiliations. Perhaps this case was his ticket back to his forr position.

..

The two of them walked up to the hawk-nosed Hank and the deputy chief of the district police station.

Just as Old Hunter was about to speak, the deputy chief of the district police station gestured dismissively at him and, smiling, introduced Dean to Hank, "This is Dean, detective captain of the Fourth Squad. He's exceptionally capable. Not only is he the fastest-promoted detective captain in Los Angeles, but his case-solving speed and success rate are also nearly one hundred percent. He is a very competent young man."

Old Hunter was completely baffled. He glanced at the enthusiastically gesturing deputy chief, then at Dean, who maintained a silent smile.

Such praise. When did Dean get chummy with the district police's deputy chief?

After hearing the introduction from the district deputy chief beside him, Hank nodded. "He certainly looks spirited. Alright then, Old Hunter, this case has caused quite a stir, and frankly, your abilities are lacking. So, let Dean handle this case."

As he spoke, his gaze shifted to Dean. "I'm Hank, the new deputy chief of the Detective Bureau. Dean, I heard you were suspended for excessive use of force. If you can solve this case within seven days, not only can you return to work, but I can also recomnd you to beco captain of the Fourth Squad. Any problem with that?"

Dean shrugged. "Glad to et you, Chief Hank. Give the authority, and in three days, you'll see the case report. However, my suspension... it's not as straightforward as it looks."

Hank cut Dean off, a rare smile appearing on his usually grim face. "Don't worry. I'm not like those incompetents. As long as you have the ability, becoming captain of a squad is just the start. Even higher positions are within reach."

Hearing this, not only Old Hunter but even the district deputy chief standing nearby was a bit stunned.

He was considered part of the police departnt's upper echelon, but he knew very little about this recently appointed deputy chief of the Detective Bureau. He'd praised Dean earlier because Patrolman Hawk was one of his subordinates, and Hawk was on good terms with Dean. He figured a few nice words cost nothing and might earn him so goodwill from the capable young detective.

But he'd never imagined Deputy Chief Hank would make such an outlandish promise to Dean right in front of them.

Do you really think the police departnt is your family business?

These old-tirs usually just offered pie in the sky to their subordinates, but this 'parachuted-in' deputy chief was outright building castles in the air.

Thinking of this, the district deputy chief found himself looking at Dean with a hint of sympathy.
