Not long after returning to the room, Jimmy left again, went back through the fire escape to the parking lot, and got into Miguel's car to wait together.
They took turns watching for a few hours. With the limited space in the car, they suffered quite a bit, but didn't notice anyone approaching Jimmy's vehicle. It wasn't until early morning that Jimmy saw a car pull into the parking spot next to his, "Miguel, sothing's happening." He nudged Miguel and opened the laptop to monitor the surveillance caras.
The other party didn't get out imdiately after parking, but waited a few minutes before opening the door and getting out. They crouched behind Jimmy's car, touching around the rear wheel area, then opened the gas cap from what they could see on the monitor.
"Go."
Jimmy pushed open the car door, flashed his flashlight, and pointed his gun at the person: "FBI, don't move."
The person was about to leave after closing the gas cap when they were suddenly illuminated by a beam of light and heard "FBI." Without reacting to raise their hands, they drew their handgun instead. "Bang bang"—gunshots rang out. Jimmy imdiately crouched to take cover behind the car, but Miguel, the rookie, returned fire directly.
Jimmy wanted to capture them alive, so he didn't shoot initially. With his marksmanship, the opponent shouldn't have been able to fire first. But everything was ruined by Miguel. He was still too young and fired when he saw the gun pointed in his and Jimmy's direction.
"Cease fire, cease fire! FK!"
Jimmy shouted while cursing, only managing to hit the person behind the car on the arm. However, when the opponent leaned sideways, they suddenly lost balance and collapsed to the ground.
"Cease fire, cease fire! FK! Miguel!"
Miguel emptied his magazine before gasping and shivering against the car, changing mags, but it was too late now. Jimmy could see that the fallen figure was no longer moving, and it was clear that the bullets Miguel fired had hit a lethal spot.
Jimmy called out to Miguel. The two cautiously approached the other with flashlights, and even from two or three ters away, Jimmy could hear Miguel's rapid breathing—this guy really ssed things up.
Sure enough, the person had been shot, in the head, hit in the brain from the side, with a considerable amount of blood on the ground, clearly beyond saving.
Jimmy: "Miguel, call for backup and an ambulance. FK!"
Miguel, still in shock, pulled out his phone to make the call. After he hung up, he glanced back at the figure on the ground and suddenly exclaid, "This person, he's in the photo you wanted to identify before."
Jimmy was speechless. When he got next to the person, he already noticed—it was a black man, the sa one who was in the car surveilling Jesse when Jimmy was tailing him. But earlier, the photo identification hadn't confird his identity.
Now the person was definitely identified, but it wasn't necessary anymore; he was already dead.
Miguel looked at Jimmy, terrified. He had cald down, but having accidentally killed a crucial figure and possibly interrupted the existing leads was still troubling for him.
Jimmy: "Calm down! Don't overthink it; we still have work to do."
An ambulance and DEA personnel soon arrived at the hotel, and the police were notified as well. Two patrol cars blocked the parking lot entrance temporarily.
Jimmy: "Miguel, follow them back to check fingerprints and identity, and have the techs examine these tracking devices. These are the ones he retrieved from the car, focus on the two newly installed ones. Also, contact the police departnt for traffic footage, see where he ca from."
Miguel nodded and returned to the office with the DEA guys. Of course, there'd be overti; they also needed to report the shooting. Unlike Jimmy, who was FBI and not under anyone's thumb here.
After things cald down a bit, Hank's call finally ca through. Apparently, he was late to receive the news, but to call even deep at night made Jimmy feel reassured.
Jimmy told Hank to rest first. He'd co to the office during the day to discuss it.
Hank was evidently anxious, having Mary drive him back to the DEA office early. Jimmy and Miguel didn't even go ho to rest. Unable to withstand Hank's insistence, they waited until their supervisor Hawke arrived at the office before explaining their suspicion of being followed, finding a tracker, and setting a trap for the suspect.
Miguel stood up to apologize. Jimmy had fired only one shot, the rest of the shots exchanged were his, including the fatal headshot.
Hank laughed, patting Miguel, telling him to take it easy. The opponent fired first, so Miguel's response was self-defense. It's no big deal; just follow the internal procedures. But Miguel might need a couple of days off.
Hawke agreed with Hank's opinion. Miguel, biting his lip, thought it over and eventually nodded, briefing others on the ongoing investigation before taking his administrative leave to rest at ho.
Installing a tracker on Jimmy's car was a serious matter. That car was a DEA-provided decoy, making it hard to tell whether soone inside had leaked information. Hawke's expression was grim, but without any leads, investigating internally wasn't feasible.
After much discussion, Jimmy swapped cars and returned to the hotel to rest. The deceased black man's identity remained unconfird; his fingerprint information wasn't in the criminal database, nor did he have any identity docunts, which was troubleso. Hank promised to get soone to verify it; if he was gang-affiliated, soone would recognize him, and Hank just happened to have a few informants he could use.
Besides asking Hank to identify the person, Jimmy also updated everyone on his surveillance of Gus, suggesting that the man might be affiliated with Gus's people or organization. The focus remained on closely monitoring Gus.
By this point, Hawke had completely lost any inclination to speak on Gus's behalf, directly arranging a surveillance team to watch near Gus's restaurant, notifying Jimmy when they had news.
-----------------
Gus sat in his office, expressionless, hanging up the phone. His subordinate, Tyrus, had just been confird dead last night at the hotel parking lot where Jimmy was staying, now taken away by the DEA.
Tyrus was Gus's right-hand man, having been with him for many years. Due to Gus's ticulous nature, he always avoided exposure. The people around him had no overt criminal records; identifying Tyrus would take considerable ti.
He had to admit to underestimating that FBI agent. Mike's arrangents were sound, yet the other party had discovered them so quickly, clearly warranting an upward revision of their threat assessnt.
Looking at the number on his phone, he called Mike: "Mike, halt all activities. We need to lay low."
After listening, Mike hung up, drove to the lab beneath the laundry, and inford the working chemists to stop after completing the day's tasks, pending further notice.
Jesse, whom Jimmy had been monitoring earlier, was in the lab, one of the chemists. When another person removed their filter mask, it was another familiar face to Jimmy—DEA agent Hank's brother-in-law, Walter White.
The two looked at Mike in confusion from the tal scaffolding corridor. Mike didn't offer much explanation, only stating it was Gus's decision before leaving the lab.
Old Mike left the laundry, imdiately heading to the countryside to clear out his car, including weapons and ergency cash, packing everything up and going to a safe spot only he knew to store them before returning ho.
This ti they faced a completely different type of opponent from before, demanding more caution.
