The Pacific disappeared beneath them as they crossed into the mainland.

The badlands unfolded below—a scarred expanse of desert, broken highways, and the skeletal remains of pre-Collapse infrastructure. Once, this had been farmland. Now it was dust and mory.

"Approaching designated landing zone," Synth announced.

The shuttle descended.

The cloaking field bent light around the hull, rendering them invisible to radar, thermal scanners, and the naked eye alike.

They touched down on a crumbling pre-Collapse road—asphalt spider-webbed with cracks, the edges being slowly devoured by sand. The sun was lower now, casting long shadows across the wasteland.

The cargo bay opened with a hydraulic hiss.

Inside, the three vehicles waited: a civilian car, matte gray and unremarkable; a rugged 4x4 with reinforced plating and oversized tires; and the Kurai Specter, its teal paint catching the dying light like polished jade.

Synth stepped onto the ramp, surveying the dead world around them.

Johnny erged from the shuttle, his boots heavy on the tal. He stopped beside the 4x4, one hand resting on its hood.

"The vehicle's loaded with jamming tech—you won't register on any corporate sensors." Synth told him.

Johnny nodded. His chro eye tracked the horizon, reading threats that weren't there yet.

"Your people are waiting," Synth added.

Johnny's human eye found Synth's. Sothing unspoken passed between them—acknowledgnt, perhaps, or the beginning of acceptance.

Johnny climbed into the 4x4. The engine engaged with a low electric hum. He didn't wave, didn't look back. The vehicle rolled off the broken road and into the wasteland, kicking up a plu of dust.

Artemis was already in the Kurai, running final system checks.

The Kurai's engines roared to life—a throaty, aggressive sound that seed almost eager. The vehicle shot forward, tearing across the cracked asphalt toward the distant glow of Virelia's skyline.

Synth watched her go. Then he turned to the civilian car.

Arty was already inside, pressed against the window like a child on a road trip. Julia sat in the back, her smart glasses dark, her expression distant.

Synth took the driver's seat.

"Virelia," he said. "Two hours."

Behind them, the shuttle's ramp sealed. The cloaking field shimred, and the craft vanished—invisible, silent, waiting for the signal to return.

The civilian car pulled onto the highway that connected the wasteland to the gacity.

The elevator doors opened onto a dim hallway that slled of recycled air and old concrete.

Synth stepped out. His footsteps echoed softly against the floor—a sound he made deliberately. The corridor stretched ahead, lined with identical doors, each one a cell in the hive of Virelia's lower-mid housing blocks.

He could have sent a drone. Could have fabricated tools to retrieve what he needed without ever setting foot in this building. But so things demanded presence. So closures required the weight of physical return.

Two won stood ahead, halfway down the hall. One he recognized.

Nyra.

She was mid-sentence when he approached, her words carrying that rhythmic cadence he rembered from their brief encounter—every phrase a beat, every pause deliberate. The subdermal LED at her temple pulsed in soft violet, syncing with whatever music played through her earbuds. Her hair was different now: the undercut sharper, the tight coils dyed in a gradient from electric violet to dusty rose. The thin silver chain still connected her septum ring to the small stud at the corner of her lip, catching the hallway's dim light when she moved.

She turned as he passed. Paused. The rhythm of her speech broke.

"Hey." She pulled one earbud free, the faint thump of bass bleeding into the air before she muted it.

Synth stopped. "Hey."

The other woman—older, tired, carrying grocery bags that strained at the handles—glanced between them with the wary patience of soone who'd learned not to ask questions in buildings like this.

He looked up. "You don't strike

as religious."

Nyra's lip ring caught between her teeth—a habit, he noted, that she indulged when thinking. "I'm not. But this isn't about gods or prayers or any of that corporate-approved spiritual sedation." She shrugged, the motion almost musical. "It's about people. Real ones. The ones nobody else sees."

"And you think I need that."

"I think—" She paused, chewing the ring again. "I think you walk through the world like you're not part of it. Like you're watching from sowhere far away." Her dark eyes t his silver ones without flinching. "That's a lonely way to live, friend. Even if you've got reasons."

The older woman shifted her grocery bags. "Nyra, I need to get these inside before the cold-chain breaks."

"Yeah, yeah." Nyra waved her off, then turned back to Synth. "Co if you want. Don't if you don't. But the invitation's real." She replaced her earbud, the bass resuming its muted pulse.

He crossed to the far wall.

He moved through the apartnt slowly.

The futon where Max had sat, silent and hollow-eyed, while Ray tried to coax him back to life with warmth and patience and the desperate love of a ghost nad Ralph.

The couch, where Selena had slept those first terrible nights, waking screaming from dreams of white rooms and smiling technicians. Where Ray had held her—awkward, uncertain, learning to be a father in the space of hours—while she sobbed into his chest.

The corner where the toolkit still sat.

Synth crossed to it. A heavy box, unassuming, bearing the weight of a mory that wasn't his but felt like it anyway.

Selena's sixteenth birthday.

Synth looked at them. They saw a man in a dark coat, carrying a heavy box, erging from an apartnt that had belonged to soone else.

They saw prey.

"Hold up, buddy." The larger one stepped forward, blocking the path. His breath carried the sour tang of cheap alcohol and tabolized stimulants. "That's Red's place. Nobody said you could move in."

Synth's expression didn't change. "The apartnt's been reassigned. Take it up with the administrator."

"Administrator." The smaller one snorted. "Hear that, Coco? He thinks paper pushers run this block."

Coco—the larger one—smiled without humor. "Red owed people. Debts don't disappear just because he does." His chro hand flexed, servos whining. "So whatever you're carrying, we're gonna need to see it. Call it a... transition fee."

Synth considered his options.

He could walk through them. Literally. They wouldn't even understand what had happened before they woke up on the floor, and they might not wake up at all.

He could consu them. Add two more ghosts to his collection. Two more sets of mories, skills, petty cruelties and forgotten kindnesses.

Or he could remind them why apex predators shouldn't be mistaken for prey.

KRYPTLINE-X activated.

Ti stretched. The world slowed to honey-thick crawl. Coco's hand was rising toward him—a grab, probably, ant to intimidate. In real-ti it would have been fast. In Synth's dilated perception, it crawled through the air like a swimr through molasses.

He accessed Coco's neural interface. The man's security was laughable—a consur-grade firewall ant to stop adware, not intrusion. Synth moved through his systems like water through sand, cataloguing contacts, extracting data, mapping the small network of connections that constituted this man's digital existence.

Nothing useful. No one important. Just a bottom-feeder who'd attached himself to a dead man's reputation.

Ti resud.

Synth's palm rose and pressed flat against Coco's face.

Soft arcs of white electricity sparked across the contact point. Coco's body spasd once, his eyes rolling back, and he collapsed like a puppet with severed strings. Non-lethal. He'd wake in an hour with a headache and gaps in his short-term mory.

The smaller one froze.

"Your friend will recover," Synth said. His voice was calm. asured. The voice of sothing that had stopped pretending to be human. "Take him. Leave. Don't co back to this floor."

The man's amber eyes were wide, his chro arms hanging useless at his sides. He nodded once—jerky, terrified—and grabbed Coco under the arms, dragging him toward the stairs at the far end of the hall.

Synth watched them go.

Then he walked to the elevator, pressed the call button, and waited.

The doors opened. He stepped inside.

As the elevator descended, Synth's hand found the flyer in his pocket. He unfolded it, reading the hand-written words again.

Community Gathering. All Welco. The Church of the Quiet Light.

Nyra's voice echoed in his mory: You walk through the world like you're not part of it.

She wasn't wrong.

He thought of Julia's words on the shuttle. Her grandfather's dream. Paradise on Earth. The failed experints that had killed so many, the technology that had been buried along with its victims.

You proved him right, she'd said. You could bring paradise to Earth. Not just to one island. Everywhere.

He thought of the island he'd left behind. Artemis racing through Virelia's underground. Johnny returning to his people in the wasteland. A family scattered across the map, each pursuing their own path.

And here he was. Alone in an elevator, carrying a dead man's toolkit and a flyer for a church he didn't believe in.

The ones nobody else sees.

The words snagged sothing inside him. A hook catching on fabric he hadn't known was there.

The elevator reached the ground floor. The doors opened onto the building's cramped lobby: cracked tiles, flickering lights, the eternal sll of recycled air and human desperation.

Synth stepped out.

The flyer was still in his hand.

He didn't throw it away.
