"You're sure about this, right?" Kai's voice quivered slightly as he asked one last ti.

Isla, perched on his shoulder, rolled her eyes. "Will you stop being so worried? Everything will be just fine. Otherwise, I wouldn't have suggested it in the first place."

Kai exhaled slowly, trying to steady his nerves. He nodded curtly, his eyes fixed on the village's entrance. Despite Isla's confidence, doubt still lingered. This plan was ambitious, bordering on reckless. Yet, he knew why he had agreed. Isla had promised that killing the Catalyst would unlock the path to his ultimate goal—to beco a Dark Elf. If her words were true, it was a risk worth taking.

But even so, the stakes were nerve-wracking. This might have been a ga, but there was no reset button. If he failed—if he died—it was over. Ga over. He clenched his clawed hands into fists, the sharp tips biting into his palms.

The village lood ahead, cloaked in darkness, its high tal gate silhouetted against the faint glow of moonlight. Kai took a deep breath, his resolve hardening. He glanced at Isla, who gave him a small nod of reassurance, then activated [Shadow Cloak].

Tendrils of dark energy enveloped his body, weaving into an almost tangible shroud. Within monts, he vanished, lding into the surrounding shadows. Isla, now a swirl of light, disappeared into his Monster Core to avoid being left behind.

The forest's shadows embraced him, aiding his silent approach toward the gate. Every step was calculated, his movents fluid and deliberate. The village's guards stood at their posts, their glowing eyes scanning the dimly lit surroundings. They didn't notice the small shadow slipping closer.

Kai reached the gate. Its iron bars were weathered and spaced just wide enough for his lithe body. With a quiet exhale, he slipped through one of the gaps, his heart hamring in his chest. He was inside.

But this was only the beginning. Isla had mapped the route in advance, marking the path he had to take. Ti was critical—he had one minute to reach his destination.

"Go left," Isla's voice resounded in his mind, steady and commanding.

Kai obeyed without hesitation, darting left. His small fra moved quickly, weaving between the legs of the oblivious Dark Elves strolling down the cobbled street. Their tall, graceful forms towered over him, their pale, angular faces frad by flowing dark hair. He nearly tripped over a discarded sack but managed to recover, his claws scraping against the stone.

"Right," Isla instructed, her tone unwavering.

Kai veered toward a narrow, shadowed alley, exactly as she had described. Relief surged through him as he saw it. The alley was just ahead—a sanctuary from prying eyes.

'I made it!' The thought was triumphant as he sprinted toward the alleyway.

But suddenly, the surge of energy fueling his [Shadow Cloak] sputtered. His legs faltered, and he stumbled, barely managing to catch himself a few ters from the alley's entrance.

'Shit... no, no, no...' His breath ca in ragged gasps as panic set in.

His Monster Energy had completely drained. Kai's body felt like a lead weight, his limbs refusing to move. Around him, the murmur of Dark Elves filled the air. Any one of them could notice him at any mont.

"Have you heard? The King's decided to feed the beast with his own son..." a nearby voice whispered.

"He really sacrificed his own son? The man's a lunatic," another replied, the words dripping with quiet horror.

"Shhh, do you want to end up like him?" the first warned.

Kai's mind barely registered the conversation. Darkness pressed in, and his pulse thundered in his ears. His body was failing him. He was so close, yet it might as well have been miles.

'Am I really going to die here?' The thought struck like a dagger. He couldn't move. He couldn't even cry for help.

'Isla... help ,' he whispered desperately in his mind.

For a mont, there was silence. Then, Isla's voice ca, calm but sharp. "Stop panicking and focus on the Varkul's Cultivation Technique. No one's noticed you yet. Close your eyes and breathe."

Her tone cut through the haze of fear. Kai forced himself to obey. He closed his eyes, drawing in a shuddering breath. The ambient energy around him seed distant, like a storm battering against a closed door.

'Focus... focus,' he told himself.

The energy began to seep into his body, thread by thread, through a tiny gap in the taphorical door. Each strand brought a flicker of strength, but it wasn't enough. Why couldn't he take in more? Why was the flow so weak?

Then, sothing shifted. The image of the door filled his mind—a small, weathered thing barely holding back a powerful tide. Kai's frustration grew. Why couldn't he tear it down? As his desire for strength burned brighter, the door quivered. The gap widened.

A torrent of energy surged through him. His limbs tingled as the Monster Energy filled his Core. It was warm, alive, and intoxicating. A system notification flickered in his vision.

[You have learned the Second Stage of Varkul's Cultivation Technique.]

[Second Stage Ability: You can absorb 3 Monster Energy from the ambient air every ten seconds. You are also able to fill your Monster Core instantly once a day.]

Kai's eyes snapped open, a fierce grin spreading across his face. Strength surged through him, and he leapt to his feet, dashing into the alleyway before anyone could notice the small figure crouched in the shadows.

He had done it. He had pushed through his limits when he thought all was lost.

From within his Core, Isla's voice echoed with a mix of awe and disbelief. "He really did it... in the middle of a crisis, no less. Maybe Master was right about this human... Maybe there's more to him than I realized."

Kai's grin only widened as he pressed deeper into the alley, his claws glinting faintly in the darkness. For the first ti, he truly felt like he had accomplished sothing great.
