Chapter 64: The Undying Alexander

“ I visited Alexander’s friends, his colleagues, and so of his business partners, and I learned an interesting rumor.”

Inspector Lestrade now had quite an amused expression, and in fact, it was indeed amusing.

“ Among those who knew Alexander, he had a nickna—The Undying Alexander.”

“ Oh? Why was he called that nickna?”

“ This really is a bit interesting.”

When Inspector Lestrade brought up this topic, he too found it rather amusing.

“ At first, it was due to an accident. He went mountain climbing with his friends, and the weather suddenly changed. His friends saw with their own eyes as a bolt of lightning struck him. They were all terrified, thinking he was dood, but when they ran over, they found him still alive. They hurriedly carried him down the mountain to the hospital, and after treatnt, there was no major problem.”

“ Oh, that does sound quite legendary.”

At this, Levi raised his brows slightly.

To be struck by lightning and not die—even in modern tis, such a story would be enough to stir endless discussions.

“ Later, there was another ti when he went to sea to receive a shipnt. He encountered a storm, lost his footing, and was swept into the ocean. Everyone thought he was dead, but in the end, they found him washed onto a nearby beach, once again escaping disaster.”

“ His luck really was good.”

Compared to Inspector Lestrade’s animated storytelling, Levi remained calm.

In the modern world of developed information networks, he had read about similar events before.

Ultimately, so people were simply lucky.

But he had to admit, this kind of luck was indeed intriguing.

“ So everyone thought Alexander was lucky, and they gave him this nickna—The Undying Alexander.”

“ And what did he think of it himself?”

“ He was originally a devout believer. After surviving those two dangers, he beca even more convinced it was the Holy Lord’s protection, and he often went to church for worship.”

“ A devout believer, huh……………”

Levi sighed at this, then seed to recall sothing.

“ If I rember correctly, that Doctor Doolittle was also a devout believer who often went to church, wasn’t he?”

“ Hahaha, now that you ntion it, that really is a coincidence…………… You don’t an to suspect the church, do you?”

Inspector Lestrade laughed, but then imdiately realized.

As a policeman, suspicion was his duty.

Not to ntion, the conflict between the Holy Lord Church and the Queen was sothing most of the higher-ups were well aware of.

“ Hard to say. Can you find out which church Alexander frequented? If it turns out to be the sa one as Doctor Doolittle, then things would get interesting.”

“ That really would be interesting.”

Inspector Lestrade’s eyes lit up at once.

As a policeman, he was the last person to believe in coincidences.

He did not understand science, nor did he understand the occult, but as a policeman, he did not need to.

From his perspective, once there was motive and connection, suspicion would rise sharply.

It was like a club frequented by courtesans and gamblers—if soone claid they were innocent, the police would never believe them.

Believing them would make them the fool.

“ By the way, check on Betty too. I suspect she might also be a devout believer who often went to church.”

Levi added this.

He had not thought in this direction before, but after hearing Inspector Lestrade ntion devout believers going to church several tis, he too began to suspect.

In the Empire, most believers belonged to the Puritan Sect.

They were busy with work and life, and at most they prayed to the All-Seeing Eye in their rooms in the morning and evening—like Irene, who balanced both work and faith without interference.

There were not many who regularly went to church.

And those who went and then committed cris……… were even fewer.

“ If that’s the case, then this really is interesting! Can we investigate this case?”

Inspector Lestrade’s eyes shone brightly now, but he quickly asked, and Levi also nodded.

“ Of course.”

Given the relationship between MI7 and the Royal Family, if Inspector Lestrade’s investigation proved correct, and if Levi and MI7 managed to find so evidence, then Her Majesty the Queen might seize the opportunity to drive the Holy Lord Church completely out of Mist City.

“ Alright, I’ll look into it!”

“ Also check where Alexander was buried. We may need to dig up his grave.”

“ Got it, wait for my word.”

Inspector Lestrade truly was a seasoned policeman—clean work, quick action.

Soon, Levi received brand new information, and then……………

They ca to dig a grave.

“ I really didn’t expect we’d one day co to dig up a grave in a churchyard!”

Katie was thrilled, practically itching to start.

Even though it was a moonless, windy night fit for murder, she was as excited as if she were going to Cinderella’s ball.

“ Miss Katie, you really are excited.”

Anthony, on the other hand, looked hesitant and guilty, like a thief.

To be precise, he looked like a man dragged unwillingly from a beautiful woman’s bed to stand in the cold night wind—clearly preferring a warm blanket over the chill.

“ Because this is fun, isn’t it?”

“ Fun or not, I can’t say, but it’s definitely rare.”

Henry, holding a shovel, shook his head.

As a mber of Levi’s team and the main digging force, he knew tonight would not end peacefully.

“ Enough, let’s dig quickly. This is a secret operation.”

Levi raised the collar of his trench coat to cover his face, and holding up his gas lamp, he spoke in a low voice.

Inspector Lestrade’s investigation results were shocking—Doctor Doolittle, Betty, and Alexander had all frequented this church.

Of course, everyone had assud they were devout believers attending services.

Moreover, Doctor Doolittle’s body had been buried here.

And, to add, Madam Durex’s body was also buried here.

The people connected to Levi’s cases were all buried in this churchyard.

While not impossible, Levi could not shake off a bad feeling.

As detective novels would put it: “There is no coincidence in this world, only inevitability.”

Now it turned out that those buried in this church within the past three years were all tied to his case.

“ Here it is.”

Levi lifted the gas lamp, shining it on the tombstone.

“ Start digging.”

“ Ah……………”

Henry sighed deeply and had no choice but to begin.

Levi certainly would not get his hands dirty, and Anthony did not want to soil his clothes.

Katie was strong, everyone knew that, but what would it look like if a group of n stood by while a young girl dug up a grave?

As a soldier, Henry could not allow himself to lose face like that, so he had to dig personally.

The reason they chose to act secretly at night like grave robbers instead of sealing off the church officially was because Levi, after discussing with the Old Butler and Lestrade, decided not to alert the enemy.

The Holy Lord Church still had several churches in Mist City, the last bastions of the conservative faction.

If word got out, they might take action.

So the five of them ca at night to act like grave robbers.

“ Honestly, at first I never thought this matter would involve the Holy Lord Church, but thinking about it now, it isn’t strange.”

Anthony lit a cigarette, sighing, and Levi nodded.

Thinking carefully, from the Courtesan Killer to the vampire murders, though the death count was not high, the real aim was to disturb society, disrupt public order, and create panic.

Mist City was the Empire’s capital.

To stir up such chaos here could hardly be the work of so small radical group.

But if the Holy Lord Church did it, that made far more sense.

Given their hostile stance against the Queen, Levi could guess even with the roots of his hair why the Holy Lord Church would want to do this.

They wanted to create panic, then use it as a pretext to declare the Queen in league with demons.

Throw a stone idol into a river, kill a few fish, stuff so papers inside, release a few talking foxes into the forest to shout nonsense………

That was why Sister Elizabeth had not co along this ti.

After all, she too was of the Holy Lord Church, though from the Puritan Sect.

But who knew whether there were spies among them?

“ Hey, aren’t you two going to help out?”

Henry stopped digging, glaring at Levi and Anthony.

A proper burial was not like a mass grave, where you just dug a shallow pit.

The grave was nearly two ters deep, and the soil was firmly packed.

Without an excavator, the job was exhausting.

“ I’m keeping watch.”

Levi decisively refused.

But he was not lying—at that mont, his puppet bird was perched on a tree branch above them.

In the corner of Levi’s vision was a minimap like in an FPS ga.

Once activated, it showed how many people were around.

If anyone approached, Levi would know imdiately.

“ I’m wearing fine furs.

Do you really have the heart to make crawl into that muck?”

Anthony spoke with self-righteousness, as if protecting his clothes was only natural.

“ Of course I do.

Just take them off, problem solved.”

“ You want to freeze to death?”

“ I want to strangle you!”

Henry glared fiercely at Anthony.

“ If I don’t find a body in here, I’ll strangle you and toss you in!”

“ Let do it, Mr.

Henry.”

At this, Katie could not hold back and volunteered.

“ I’m strong.

Digging is no problem.”

“ Eh, how can I let a delicate young lady do this……… Fine, I know you can handle it.”

Henry knew Katie’s strength.

Back in the haunted house, he had seen her lift a bookcase taller than herself and hurl it at the puppets.

Still, his masculine pride made him reluctant to let a girl do such rough work.

But seeing Levi and Anthony—one pretending to keep watch, the other smoking—Henry was helpless.

Levi was their captain, and without him back in the haunted house, they might not have survived.

Henry could only… let Katie help.

“ Alrighty!”

Katie replied with excitent, jumped into the pit, grabbed a shovel, and soon dirt was flying “swish swish swish” out of the grave……………

Levi glanced over and felt she was faster than an excavator.

Not long after, with the soil dug out, a coffin was revealed.

Henry did not hesitate.

He grabbed the lid and pulled hard!

The coffin opened.

Everyone leaned in curiously.

Levi brought the gas lamp close to shine inside.

Under the glow of the gas lamp, the coffin was empty.
