Chapter 48: You Don’t Know What Kind of Opponent You’re Facing
Na Mi walked to the window and lifted a corner of the curtain, peering down.
From his vantage point, he could see seven or eight white vans parked on the street opposite, and a number of n carrying all sorts of knives and clubs were filing out of a small inn across the road.
“I gave them the wrong address. That’s my sincerity.” He i cautiously took a few steps forward and looked toward the direction Na Mi was gazing at.
From her angle, she could only see the small inn opposite, not the vans below.
Na Mi was a smart man. He knew that the other side had placed those n so close only to threaten him.
If sothing went wrong, they could imdiately make a commotion and call everyone over.
Seeing Na Mi remain silent, He i added, “I just wanted to prove myself sohow. Otherwise, you wouldn’t necessarily believe .”
Na Mi let out a low, rumbling chuckle from his throat. “I know you have ulterior motives. Maybe… you want us to destroy each other? That look on your face just now… as if everything was in your control. Unfortunately…”
A flicker of unease flashed through He i’s heart. “What do you an? I only want to help you now…”
Na Mi’s laughter grew darker and colder. “You have no idea what kind of opponent you’re facing… they’re here!”
Without a sound, the straw effigy on his altar began to emit green smoke—and the next instant, it burst into flas.
Na Mi’s body started trembling violently from unbearable pain.
That was the sign that his Head-Descending Curse had been broken.
Even though he had taken the other Head-Descending Master seriously, the speed at which the opponent had dispelled the Nail Curse still shocked Na Mi deeply.
But how that person managed to dispel it so swiftly wasn’t the most pressing concern at the mont.
What mattered now was how to handle the backlash and the imminent danger.
With a sudden motion, Na Mi swept everything off the altar to the ground, grabbed a jar of sticky, multicolored liquid, and poured it straight into his mouth.
The liquid stread from the corners of his lips, staining his clothes with strange, mottled colors.
A pungent, acrid odor quickly spread throughout the room.
The veins on Na Mi’s forehead bulged even more, spreading down to his neck. His face turned a dark crimson, making him look even more hideous.
Just from the sll, He i could tell what ingredients were in that jar—it definitely contained parts of the human body.
She knew that Na Mi was using an extre thod to restore his power, one with severe side effects.
If he drank too much, there was no telling when he might go insane.
This was a thod that no righteous Head-Descending Master would ever use.
He i quietly took two steps back.
The mont Na Mi dropped the jar, a sense of danger suddenly flared in his heart. He abruptly turned toward the window.
Sensing sothing as well, He i followed his gaze.
Without warning, the window was struck by sothing heavy and exploded inward with a loud crash.
Wood splinters and shards of glass blasted into the room all at once.
Caught off guard, Na Mi didn’t dodge. The flying glass cut several bloody lines across his face, leaving him looking utterly disheveled.
He i’s expression changed drastically. She barely managed to raise her hand to shield her face before the shattered glass rained down on her.
When she lowered her hand, He i was horrified to see a sinister-looking bat hovering at the shattered window, staring at both her and Na Mi with a predatory gaze.
Na Mi was already casting a spell before the altar, montarily holding the bat at bay.
But that wasn’t what terrified He i the most.
Seizing the chance, she cautiously moved to the side of the window and peered outside—only to see dozens of n already surrounding the area.
Without a word, He i turned and bolted out of the room, her expression completely different from the confidence she had shown earlier.
…
A middle-aged man with the typical features of a Cantonese stood beside a van, arrogantly banging on its door with an iron rod.
More than twenty n wielding iron rods surrounded the small inn behind him so tightly that not even air could escape.
A passing acquaintance called out to him, “Master Chen’s chopping people today? Why didn’t you give us a heads-up? Don’t drag us old neighbors into trouble!”
“Chop your mother, chop!” the man—Master Chen, Chen Hua—cursed with a grin. “I’m just here to find soone. If I don’t chop anyone and you keep running your mouth, you’ll make Ah Long misunderstand. Then I’ll chop you bastards first!”
A short man who looked sowhat like the actor Nat Chan hurried out from the small inn and said helplessly, “Master, we didn’t find that Nanyang man Ah Keung ntioned.”
Chen Hua frowned. “You checked every room?”
The short man nodded. “Even the toilets. The only thing left unchecked is the inside of the toilet bowls.”
Chen Hua slamd the van door with force. “We’re brothers-in-arms. Ah Keung’s dead, and we can’t just do nothing.”
“He said that guy’s a terrifying Head-Descending Master who almost killed Ah Nan, that brat. We didn’t even back off. I even brought along my old crew who only co out when it’s do-or-die.”
“That brat might not even buy a soda on normal days, but he wouldn’t dare ss with us on this. Take so n and check again.”
The short man ran back into the inn.
Not long after, he ca running back out, shaking his head. “We’ve checked everywhere, Master. No one.”
“No one? What the hell is Ah Keung playing at? Does he think my guandao’s gone rusty?” Chen Hua growled. “Call him with the number he left and ask what’s going on. Tell him if he’s fooling , I’ll chop him myself.”
The short man hurried back inside to use the phone.
The first call didn’t go through.
The second finally connected. After saying just a few words, he hung up and rushed back to Chen Hua. “Ah Keung said he might’ve gotten the location wrong. He told us to keep an eye on the noise nearby.”
“That Ah Keung—always so loud, and now he’s this unreliable?” Chen Hua frowned, glancing around. “Keep an eye on the noise? There’s noise everywhere here. What, do we listen to every room?”
The short man suggested, “Let’s split up and check the surrounding places. If we don’t find anything, it’s not our fault.”
Chen Hua nodded. “That idiot Ah Keung’s unreliable—”
Suddenly, the sound of shattering glass cut him off.
Chen Hua turned toward the source of the noise—the small inn—and exclaid, “Well, I’ll be damned! There is movent!”
He imdiately barked orders: “Quick! Call everyone over! Ti to work! Don’t let Ah Keung look down on us! After this job, everyone gets a massage!”
Under his lead, nearly a hundred n sward toward the small inn.
…
He i leaped from the second floor, landing atop a parked car on the roadside before springing lightly down onto the ground.
After quickly tidying her clothes, she walked calmly toward a red car parked a few dozen ters away.
As she passed by a group of n carrying knives and clubs, her expression didn’t change—but when she got past them, she quietly let out a breath of relief.
Those n were after Na Mi, not her. So she could leave in peace.
The rest would be easy to handle.
The safest option would, of course, be to return directly to Nanyang.
But that would an abandoning her plan.
He i felt a pang of unwillingness.
Though tonight’s events had gone far beyond her expectations, things were far from over. She might still have a chance…
Glancing back at the small inn now surrounded by n, He i’s heart grew tense.
Whoever these people were, they weren’t ordinary thugs. Their operation was clean and organized, and in such a short ti, they had sealed off the entire building.
She originally wanted to stay in the car and observe what would happen next to decide her next move. But the mont she got inside, she couldn’t feel safe—only an unsettling sense of being watched.
He i decisively started the car, intending to get away first.
But after driving just a few hundred ters, she suddenly felt sothing was wrong. She turned her head—and locked eyes with a pair of blood-red pupils staring at her from outside the window…
