A warmth stirred within Jing Haohao. She quietly moved into the bathroom, careful not to disturb Liang Chen, who was bustling about in the kitchen.
By the ti she had finished freshening up, Liang Chen had already served the porridge on the table.
Smiling, Jing Haohao stepped forward, opened the sterilizer, and fetched a spoon and two bowls. She ladled so of Liang Chen’s porridge, which, despite cooking for quite a while, was still sowhat thin.
Sitting opposite Liang Chen at the dining table, he passed a youtiao (deep-fried dough stick) to Jing Haohao and asked, “Anything happening tonight?”
Jing Haohao shook her head.
“Then, let’s go to the Four Seasons Hotel for dinner tonight.”
While nibbling on her youtiao, Jing Haohao mumbled an acknowledgent, not questioning further.
“After dinner, I’ll take you sowhere.”
Curious, Jing Haohao raised an eyebrow at Liang Chen.
“Number 367, Suzhou Street.”
Suzhou Street? The most bustling city center in Jiangshan City, why would he take her there? Nearby were comrcial buildings and shopping malls… her company was around the area.
From Jing Haohao’s eye contact, Liang Chen sensed her confusion.
Liang Chen rely curved his lips into a smile without saying anything and carried on eating his al.
Grimacing, Jing Haohao lowered her head and continued with her porridge.
Suddenly, a cellphone in the living room rang.
Liang Chen stood up, walked over to the sofa, retrieved Jing Haohao’s phone from her bag, glanced at the unknown caller ID, and passed her the phone.
Holding her youtiao, Jing Haohao found it inconvenient to accept the call, so she asked Liang Chen to answer it for her. He switched on speaker mode and greeted, “Hello?”
A pleasant female voice spoke in standard Mandarin: “Hello, may I speak with Miss Jing Haohao?”
“Yes, speaking,” replied Jing Haohao, holding her youtiao but no longer eating, “May I ask who’s calling?”
“Do you know a man nad Shen Liangnian?”
Sitting across Jing Haohao, Liang Chen’s forehead furrowed harshly.
Jing Haohao t Liang Chen’s gaze, remained silent for a bit, then humd affirmatively into the phone.
“I am a nurse from Jiangshan City People’s Hospital. An hour ago, we received a 911 call for a man who passed out by the roadside. We learned from his ID who he was. The man is still unconscious and we’ve moved him to ICU, but his condition is not optimistic. Your contact number was saved at the top of his phone list with a special remark, so we thought you might be a family mber or a friend. If so, could you please co to the hospital now? Should a sudden ergency occur requiring surgery, we need soone here to sign for him.”

Jing Haohao hung up the phone, and silence descended upon the room.
She stared at her phone for a while, holding her youtiao and then looking up to Liang Chen.
His lips were tightly pressed together, a hint of displeasure crossed his face. A deep, serious gaze shifted within his pitch-black eyes.
Around him a formidable and oppressively aura, which made one feel sowhat intimidated.
Jing Haohao swallowed, set down the youtiao and spoon, wiped her fingers with a napkin, and spoke, “Liang Chen, can I go to the hospital?”
