The following morning, I woke up earlier than usual, feeling a bit anxious after our mission the previous night.

After stretching a little, I walked up to the window and noticed there was a group of soldiers that were waiting outside the residence’s gate.

Walking in the garden towards the gate, I spotted Lady Bao and her personal servant.

’Hmmm, this could be a problem...’ I thought.

When Lady Bao opened the gates to talk to the man leading the soldiers, they walked inside the garden a bit rudely, which instantly put on alert and made wake up lina and the two kids.

"Quick, get into the underground room..." I said.

lina didn’t know what was happening, but she still acted fast and carried the two children before rushing to the trapdoor, which we had hidden under a rug.

I kept peeking out of the window and used my sound magic to listen to the conversation between Lady Bao and the leading soldier.

"I’m telling you. None of my slaves have disappeared. How is that even possible?" Lady Bao said.

’Ah, so they are here to see if the Bao family was also attacked...’ I thought, realizing the small flaw in our plan.

I an, there were still other governnt officials who had their slaves since we couldn’t free them all in one night, but that didn’t an that they weren’t also being suspected.

"What’s the aning of this?" said Lord Bao as he joined the conversation in the courtyard.

"Chief, we were doing check rounds on the noble families around here. It seems that last night, more slaves disappeared. This ti inside the city walls..." said the leading soldier as he bowed his head to the chief.

Obviously, Lord and Lady Bao knew that it was our doing, but they still acted like they had no idea what had happened.

’Nobles in this country are like, scary good at acting...’ I thought.

’To be fair, if they weren’t good actors, they would have been killed already.’

After Lord Bao skillfully talked his way out of the situation, the soldiers left the residence. However, they had to leave two extra guards outside their gate—the emperor’s orders.

*sigh* "It’s alright, you can co out..." I said as I opened the trap door to the underground room.

"What the hell was that?" lina asked.

"Heh, sorry, I kind of panicked when I saw the soldiers..." I replied, scratching the back of my head.

Not even two minutes later, Lord Bao ca to our room to explain the situation.

Apparently, after the emperor received notice of the missing slaves, he ordered different groups of soldiers to check on all the noble families in the city and to assign more guards for them.

It may have seed like the emperor was trying to protect his people, but what he was really trying to do was catch us, the perpetrators.

Now that there were two emperor’s guards outside the Bao’s mansion, we wouldn’t be able to leave from the front gate as usual.

Nonetheless, that could be a great thing for us. After all, we could easily leave so other way and co back without them noticing, which would clear the Bao family of any suspicions.

Once Lord Bao left the residence to go to his job at the palace, lina and I decided to spend that day at the mansion with the two kids.

It’s not that we were scared of leaving, but it was too risky to do it during the day as every single soldier was patrolling the city.

We already had sothing in mind for that night, so we spent the day playing with Leslie and Yujun.

Curiously, I asked Vespera to make a ball for them using her weaving skills, but she didn’t know exactly what I ant.

I was thinking of a football, which didn’t exist in this world, so she had to dig through my mories to look for what I was asking her to make.

Once she saw it, she was able to recreate it with ease and used wind magic to pump it.

We couldn’t play in the courtyard since the emperor’s guards would see us, but we still had a good ti playing in our room.

During our playti, lina started skillfully juggling the ball on her feet, which impressed the two kids as they clapped for her talent.

It was funny because lina didn’t know why she felt like she had the skill to do that.

You see, in our past lives, lina loved sports. Well, not all sports, but she did practice a ton of them, with her favorites being football and kickboxing.

It was definitely a bit strange that her skills from her past life had transferred without her even rembering why. Nonetheless, I thought it was pretty funny and harmless.

When nightti ca upon the city, we started getting ready to leave the mansion but decided to wait for Lord Bao to return first. That way, we could get an update on the empress’ moves.

He told us that the Scarlet Trio and Sinoc had been moved from their positions of guarding the nobles’ mansions and were tasked with patrolling the city at night.

Still, the capital was so big that it would be hard for us to find each other randomly.

"Hmm, that ans we could get the old man from the Yushan family..." I said.

Lord Yushan was the father of one of the nobles we kidnapped at Xiulan, and they were a family who were opposed to the enslavent of commoners. However, they had to play along like the rest so they wouldn’t get executed.

They were also the main food supplier for the nobles in the country, so it was an important target for us.

’Sothing’s wrong...’ I thought.

Everything seed like it was going to plan, but sothing inside was telling that wasn’t the case.

’Giving us this opportunity to get to Lord Yushan seems too good to be true...’ I continued.

lina saw that I was deep in my thoughts and approached to ask if everything was alright.

When I told her that it seed suspicious to , she agreed, but that didn’t an we didn’t have other things in mind.

"Let’s visit the palace tonight instead..." I said, shocking the Bao couple.
