Chapter 46: Selfless Xu Daxia

The night was chilly, and with this kind of weather, there weren’t many people wandering outside after dark.

Xu Qing stood by the roadside for about ten minutes before a taxi finally arrived.

"Beiwang Road, Jiahe Complex," he instructed as he got into the back seat with a bag holding his ginger seedling. Shutting the door, he finally felt a bit of warmth. While fiddling with the vibrant green leaves of the seedling, his mind wandered elsewhere.

Though he had joked about having a girlfriend earlier, it was all in jest, just to tease that girl. It wasn’t appropriate to turn a temporary housemate into a girlfriend.

Yes, definitely inappropriate.

Other people’s girlfriends were normal, but his was from over a thousand years ago—too weird. This couldn’t work.

The taxi driver, perhaps a rookie or just tired, remained silent the entire trip. When they reached the residential complex gate, he finally spoke to remind Xu Qing.

“Thanks!” Xu Qing paid the fare, grabbed his bag, and headed ho. Sure enough, Jiang He was staring intently at the computer... desktop?

???

That seed odd.

“Ahem... what are you doing?” Xu Qing asked.

“Ah, I was just... about to play a ga,” Jiang He replied, her gaze darting briefly. Spotting the bag in his hand, she grew curious. “What’s that?”

“This?” Xu Qing tilted his head, lifted the bag, and held it out to her. “Ginger.”

“Ginger?”

“A ginger seedling.”

“...” Jiang He blinked, sensing he had an ulterior motive.

“It’s for you. You can plant it—it suits you well,” Xu Qing said with a smile. “Find a spot to keep it. The kitchen works, or your room. Just let it grow; it’s nice to have around.”

“Alright.” Jiang He took the bag to the kitchen. Watching her back, Xu Qing mulled sothing over, then turned to the computer.

Sothing was off.

“Are you still going to play your ga?”

“Not tonight. Maybe tomorrow.”

“Okay, then get ready for bed. It’s getting colder lately. Is your room warm enough?” he asked.

“A bit chilly,” she admitted, “but I’m used to it.”

“Make sure to keep warm. In a week or two, the heating will start—co here for a mont.”

Jiang He walked over, curious. “What is it?”

“Sit down.” Xu Qing gestured to the couch. They sat facing each other, staring in silence.

A few monts passed.

“Is there... sothing wrong?” Jiang He finally asked, feeling uneasy under his strange gaze.

“Nope. Go get ready for bed,” Xu Qing said, getting up as if nothing had happened.

“...” Jiang He, baffled, pressed her lips together. She couldn’t figure out what he was up to, so she shook her head and went to her room to grab clothes for a bath.

“Wait, let feel your hand,” Xu Qing suddenly said.

“?”

“Uh... to check if your hands are cold,” he explained, feigning righteousness.

“They’re not.” Jiang He clasped her hands behind her back, hesitated, then extended one. “... If you don’t believe , go ahead.”

Without hesitation, Xu Qing grabbed her hand and gave it a squeeze. Hmm, not cold at all.

“You’ve been wielding a sword—guess that makes a difference,” he remarked. He flipped her hand over to examine it. Her fingers were long, not particularly pale, with calluses on her palms and fingertips that felt rough to the touch.

These were the hands of soone who’d done hard labor. His mom would probably approve.

“What are you doing?” Jiang He asked, resisting the urge to pull her hand away.

“Checking if martial artists’ hands look bad. They don’t, so maybe I’ll train too,” Xu Qing quipped, releasing her hand and pulling out his phone to place an order on Taobao.

Winter was coming, and hands would get cold while using a computer. He decided to buy her a hand warr—girls always liked those.

Jiang He gave him a puzzled look but reluctantly accepted his explanation. After all, Xu Qing wasn’t the kind of guy to take advantage of her. He often ruffled her hair or dried it after a bath, so this wasn’t too out of the ordinary. She grabbed her clothes and went to the bathroom to shower. Soon, the sound of running water filled the apartnt.

In the living room, Xu Qing squinted at the ceiling light, then glanced toward the bathroom. He plopped down at the computer and opened Baidu—search history ti.

Whoa!

"What should a guest do when staying at soone else’s ho?""Why do so won like posting revealing photos?""How to help soone find a girlfriend?""Why don’t we run out of food?""Can I go back to Kaiyuan?""How do you know everything?""How to make a lot of money?""How much does a cake cost? Is it expensive?""Is there a way to make my chest smaller?""How to earn money faster in gas?""Are there gods in this world?"

And more. A true Baidu aficionado!

Xu Qing couldn’t help but chuckle. He glanced toward the bathroom and shook his head, not knowing whether to laugh or scold.

Revealing photos... that must’ve been from her online ga group. He decided to remove her from those groups later.

As for shrinking... they weren’t even big to begin with, so why bother?

What on earth was going through Jiang He’s mind? Xu Qing shut the computer with a sigh.

When Jiang He erged, she noticed Xu Qing staring at her oddly. Sothing about the evening felt off.

“Um... Baidu isn’t all-knowing,” Xu Qing suddenly said. “It’s just people answering your questions.”

“Huh?”

“You ask a question, and if soone knows the answer, they’ll reply. It’s just a platform where millions of people share their knowledge. So are even bad actors trying to deceive others. So, don’t believe everything you read.”

“Oh...” Jiang He seed thoughtful.

“Yeah, so be careful. Don’t get tricked. It’s late—go to bed.”

Having bought her a shower cap earlier, Xu Qing knew she didn’t wash her hair every day. Tonight, she quickly finished her bath and headed to her room to sleep.

Late into the night, Xu Qing lay in bed, snug under his blanket, staring at the dark ceiling.

At this rate, Jiang He would soon adapt fully to modern life.

And then? Convince her to be his girlfriend? Or let her go?

No, definitely not the latter. If a conflict arose, she might snap soone’s head off—that would be a disaster.

No, better to keep her here and handle her himself.

Hmm... if only she’d co over to warm his bed. Her small fra nestled beside him would be so cozy.

He needed a plan to win her over.
