Before setting off with Galdark, Bluebird had given them so ti to prepare. The three of them were allowed to say goodbye to their fellow students and to take a weapon of their choice with them, presumably the beast weapons they had been training with this entire ti.

Since they were knights in training, or at least officially part of Jack’s pack for now, they were permitted to carry weapons. It wasn’t seen as suspicious in the slightest. To them, it was a welco advantage. Their strength had grown alongside their weapon proficiency, and the familiarity of the gear was comforting.

When it ca ti to say their farewells, it was Siz they said goodbye to the longest.

“Siz, you’re going to beco a great knight!” Gary said, placing both hands firmly on his shoulders. “When you see other people doing bad, trust your gut, and if you have to, give them a punch on the back of the head to set them straight.”

Siz’s eyes were already glossy. Even though they had said they were only leaving for a short break, Siz felt a strange heaviness in his chest, as if this farewell was different... as if it ant more than they were saying.

“Am I going to see the three of you again?” Siz asked quietly.

“If we’re ant to et again, we will,” Gary replied. “And besides, we haven’t graduated yet.”

That answer seed to comfort him, at least a little. The three of them gave one last nod before they turned and headed toward the castle entrance where Galdark was waiting.

As soon as they were out of earshot, Lupus spoke.

“Why did you give that boy false hope?” Lupus asked. “We don’t plan to co back to this place. We’ve learned a lot, but we need to get out of here as soon as possible.”

Gary didn’t know how to explain it, whether this world was real or not, whether these people were shadows of the past or living people with futures ahead of them. None of that mattered in the mont. All he knew was this:

He wanted Siz to smile.

That was enough.

“Now that the three of us are alone,” Gary said, changing the topic, “I was wondering sothing. Why didn’t you want us to tell them about Unzoku? Surely it would be a good thing for them to be on alert with a creature like him. Those in the camp, as well as Bluebird.”

“Well, the truth of the answer,” Kai replied, “is actually based on what you just said.”

They continued walking, but all attention shifted to him.

“It’s starting to beco clearer and clearer that this is the past, and it’s a past that’s deeply linked to our present in many ways. The Red Wing, the Dark Guild... eventually becoming one with the Altered Hunters.”

Kai’s expression sharpened.

“That ans everything that has happened, already happened. Without us. If we told them about Unzoku, it would be information they never originally had, and that would change the outco.”

He looked between them, making sure they understood.

“Right now, I think it’s best we don’t interfere too heavily. We might be able to learn more if we just let things play out the way they already did.”

That also ant sothing else:

They shouldn’t get too involved with the Red Wing Pack... no matter how much they wanted to intervene.

Reaching the front of the main gate, they spotted Galdark waiting just outside, tapping his foot impatiently against the stone floor.

“I can see you’re very keen on having us,” Kai said. “You could’ve just told us where it is in the city and we could’ve gotten there ourselves.”

“Look, I’m just frustrated because I think this whole thing is pointless,” Galdark replied sharply. “The three of you are weaker than , and Jack, he’s even stronger than that.”

He exhaled hard through his nose.

“Neither of us can solve whatever the problem is. So if you three join to ‘help,’ it’ll just end up being more work for the Pack. And now I’m practically babysitting you, which is taking ti away from the Pack, and from Jack.”

Gary nearly snapped back. The words stung.

How could Galdark call them weak? Sure, he’d bested all three of them in the hallway earlier, but only for a mont. Still... there was no point in starting a second fight.

They put it aside. There were bigger things at stake.

Walking through the city, it was the scent that hit them first. Their noses all twitched at the sa ti.

There were others like them nearby.

The sll of Werewolves lingered thickly in the air.

The stone beneath their feet subtly changed color, shifting toward a dark reddish shade. It was subtle at first, and then unmistakable. The closer they got, the more prominent it beca.

They turned a final corner.

What lay before them was a wide curved plaza with a fountain in the center. A grand building wrapped around the entire courtyard in a sweeping arc, towering over everything like one imnse crescent-shaped fortress.

This was the Red Wing Pack. Their base. Their ho. And most importantly, for them it was their turning point.

At that mont, sothing flashed in front of their vision.

All three of them paused.

Because now it was no longer only their mission.

It was a choice.

Who would they stand beside?

Who would they betray?

And how far would the past allow them to interfere before the tiline fought back?
