Steve stood frozen where he was, his body trembling, his mind struggling to process the words that had just left Rogan’s mouth. He had known, deep down, that this might be the truth. He had braced himself for it the mont he asked the question.

But even knowing didn’t make hearing it any easier.

The faces of the missing werewolves flashed in his mind, those who had co to him with hope in their eyes, their voices trembling as they asked if he could speak to Rogan for them. He rembered the way they had smiled when he gave them the good news, when he told them they were free to leave.

And now, those sa smiles turned into ghosts in his mory.

All of it had been a lie. A lie he had unknowingly been part of.

“You said these people were family...” Steve’s voice cracked, his breath shaking as fury began to claw its way up from inside his chest. His head lifted slowly, his glare locking onto Rogan. The faint claw mark across his face burned red as his energy began to rise. “...and you murdered them!”

Rogan didn’t flinch. He didn’t apologize. He just looked back with the cold, steady eyes of an Alpha who believed every word he said was justified.

And that was what made it unbearable.

Steve’s heart thundered in his chest. The fury consuming him left no room for hesitation. Every instinct in his body scread that this wasn’t sothing he could talk through anymore.

“I challenge you,” Steve said, his voice deepening, power shaking the air around them. “I challenge you for your position!”

In that instant, a faint light glowed behind his eyes, a surge of energy that pulsed through the room like a heartbeat. Rogan’s eyes lit up in return, gleaming with a sharp, predatory red.

The bond of dominance that kept every wolf submissive before their Alpha, the invisible weight that made defiance impossible, shattered in that mont. Whatever ancient law governed their instincts, it vanished under the heat of Steve’s rage.

And then the air exploded.

Steve swung his arm out with a roar, and an energized claw of raw, condensed power tore through the floor, splitting stone as it raced straight toward Rogan.

Rogan didn’t move until the very last second. Then, with a single swing of his arm, he struck through the attack. The energy shattered like glass, scattering fragnts of white light that rained across the room.

Steve’s eyes widened. Rogan stood unhard.

But sothing strange was happening to the Alpha’s arm, white, jagged objects were protruding from beneath his skin. Bones.

Cracked fragnts fell to the ground as Rogan’s flesh rippled and sealed around them again. He flexed his fingers once, the bones retracting with a sharp sound.

“I thought this day might co,” Rogan said, his voice low but steady. “But you have no idea, Steve, no idea what kind of power I hold. I’ve never feared you.”

His expression hardened, eyes glowing brighter. “There’s a reason this pack has survived for as long as it has.”

Steve’s eyes darted to his arms, his shoulders, anywhere he could see movent. Then it happened again: the sound of cracking bone.

From Rogan’s palms, long, sharp extensions of bone erupted outward like claws forged from his own skeleton. They glead white against his dark skin.

“What... is this?” Steve muttered, his chest tightening. He had never seen anything like it before. It wasn’t just a transformation, it was sothing unnatural, sothing that bent the very essence of a werewolf’s body.

Rogan flexed his hands, bone blades glinting in the dim light. “I won’t even need our Luna to beat you,” he said. “If I’m the Alpha of this pack, I’ll prove it. And I’ll prove why you, and everyone here, still need to protect them.”

He lunged forward, his body shifting mid-charge. Black fur erupted from his skin, muscles expanding, bones cracking audibly as his fra twisted into the hulking form of a werewolf.

Steve roared in response, his body igniting in energy as his own transformation began. Fur spread across his body, his claws lengthening, his fangs bared. The mont he finished shifting, Rogan crashed into him.

The force of the impact sent a shockwave through the chamber.

Steve managed to brace himself, clawing at Rogan’s arm as one of the bone-like extensions shot forward. It pierced his stomach before he could react fully. Blood sprayed into the air, and Steve gasped in pain. Even as he gripped Rogan’s wrist to stop the strike from going deeper, the wound burned, his strength faltering.

Rogan didn’t stop. With a guttural snarl, he grabbed Steve by the arm and hurled him across the room.

The impact shook the ground, splitting the stone beneath them.

Outside, the camp began to tremble. Dust drifted down from the cliffs as several werewolves looked up toward the Alpha’s chamber.

“Do you feel that?” one of them asked. “The energy, it’s massive!”

Two others exchanged worried glances. “That has to be them. Rogan and Steve... they’re fighting.”

“But why?” another whispered, fear creeping into his voice. “They’ve always worked together. What could’ve happened between them?”

Their questions were answered with a thunderous crash. The wall of the mountain split open, stone and dust bursting outward.

Through the cloud of debris, a brown-furred werewolf was thrown violently from the breach. His body hit the ground hard, rolling across the dirt before coming to a stop. Blood soaked his fur, which began to fade as his body shifted back into human form.

It was Steve.

He lay there, battered, his body covered in wounds that glistened under the moonlight.

Monts later, another figure erged through the shattered wall, a towering shadow shrinking as it stepped forward. Rogan.

As he walked out, his transformation receded, the black fur retracting until he stood human once again. The bone-like weapons on his arms slowly dissolved back into his flesh.

He stopped beside Steve and knelt down. The camp had gathered around, watching in silence, their faces torn between shock and heartbreak.

“Steve,” Rogan said quietly, his voice carrying both weight and command. “You’re a smart man. I know you’ll understand what I’ve done is right.”

Steve’s eyes, half-open and dazed, flickered toward him in disbelief.

“I’m not going to exile you,” Rogan continued. “And I’m not going to kill you. Too many in this pack look up to you. They’d never forgive for that.”

He reached out, resting a hand on Steve’s shoulder. “So instead of trying to change my mind, I’ll change yours. You’ll stay here, locked away. And in ti, you’ll see that everything I’ve done... was for the good of the pack.”

Steve didn’t answer. He couldn’t. The pain in his body was overwhelming, but the pain in his chest was worse.

Rogan stood, looking down at him one last ti before turning away.

The rest of the pack watched in stunned silence, realizing that the bond between their two strongest mbers, their two guiding figures, was not what it was like before.
