It was the first ti Gary had ever looked Lupus in the eyes, their first eting, and it was happening with both of them fully transford into their monstrous werewolf forms.
Lupus stood tall and imposing, his Predaclaw Ascendant class on full display. Thick, coarse fur trailed down his back like a mane, and white energy leaked ominously from his fingertips. He looked less like a man and more like a force of nature.
And Gary? He was in his Shadow Ash Lycan form. His usual brown fur had darkened into sothing coal-black, wisps of smoke curling from his back like a cloak of burning ash. It was strange to him, almost funny in a grim way, that the first ti he t his uncle… it wasn't as a man, but as a beast.
I'm using the Shadow Ash Lycan form… but since the sun is out, I'm not getting any boosted energy or regeneration, Gary thought, glancing quickly behind him. I won't last long in a fight like this. So I'll have to count on him.
"We're fighting together," Gary said firmly, eyes locked on Edvard. "The Howlers fulfilled the king's request, we delivered the package. Now… I've decided to help you in this battle. As the leader of the Howlers."
It was probably the most formal Gary had ever sounded to soone he'd just t, but this situation called for clarity. He wanted his ssage to land, no confusion.
"So this is how my nephew and I finally et?" Lupus said, his voice a mix of amusent and bitterness. Energy swirled around his claws, condensing into wicked, glowing tips. "And of all things, you've chosen to side with the vampires? I thought my brother raised you better than this."
Without warning, Lupus slashed through the air, sending a wave of claw-shaped energy right at Gary.
Gary responded in kind, swinging his arm and sending out a flaming claw strike. The two attacks collided mid-air with explosive force, equal in power, neither one overpowering the other.
Then Lupus dropped to all fours and charged forward, but Edvard ca flying down from above, spinning and smashing a powerful punch into Lupus's back. The blow drove him into the mountain, cracking the stone beneath him.
Gary moved in instantly, activating Ember Dash, igniting the ground beneath his feet as he zipped forward. Lupus tried to retaliate, swiping at Edvard, but Gary was too fast. He leapt in, twisted his body, and unleashed a rapid combo of strikes to Lupus's stomach.
It looked almost like choreography. As Edvard attacked from above, Lupus would raise his guard—leaving himself open for Gary to strike. They moved like seasoned partners in battle, even though this was their first real fight together.
When an opening ca, Gary widened his jaw and unleashed a blazing burst of fire, engulfing the area around Lupus in flas.
"You don't even know what you're doing, you fool!" Lupus shouted, blasted back and bouncing violently off the rocky mountainside.
When he found his footing, he looked up, just in ti to see Edvard soaring toward him once again. But Lupus darted side to side in a zigzag pattern, narrowly avoiding Edvard's crushing punch. He bolted along the cliffside, eyes darting back to see both Gary and Edvard chasing him without hesitation.
"You have no idea what you're getting into, Gary!" Lupus roared. "We should have t face to face… You should've co to talk to !"
"Talk?!" Gary shouted, flas flickering from his mouth as he burst forward again. "You're the one who said two Alphas were destined to fight, wasn't that your rule?!"
Gary slamd into Lupus, grabbing him tightly by the side and locking him in place.
"That's good! Hold him steady!" Edvard yelled, charging up a strike with glowing energy surging into his arm.
But Lupus reacted fast, baring his fangs, he bit deep into Gary's shoulder. Gary winced, teeth clenched against the pain. He didn't let go.
Instead, he roared, releasing a tornado of fire straight from his mouth. The flas sent Lupus crashing into the mountainside, charred and growling.
Edvard followed up with a blast of red energy, aiming straight at the impact zone, but Lupus slapped it away mid-air and bolted up the mountain again, moving like a blur.
"What is this… is he running?" Edvard muttered. "The Alpha of the pack, retreating?"
He scoffed, but the truth was clear: with Lupus constantly on the move, landing a significant hit was nearly impossible. Taunting him only helped so much.
"Gary," Edvard said seriously, "I think his body heals at a rate beyond anything I've seen before. It's unreal. But I can charge up one powerful blow… if you can hold him down."
Gary's head snapped toward Edvard.
"Hold him as long as you can. When I say move, get out of the way!"
Once again, Gary found himself needing to trust soone else in a fight. Just like he had when battling Harvor. Alone, he wouldn't be able to do this.
My strength seems to match Lupus's. Everything I've been through… it's allowed to fight him on even ground, Gary thought. But I can't shake what Kai told …
Kai had warned him, one of the vampires had betrayed them. Gary had fought beside Blackjack before, but… could he really trust all of them?
That's why he hadn't transford into his dragon form. Not yet.
If he went all-out here, used everything he had against Lupus, what if he couldn't handle what ca next? What if the real threat wasn't Lupus, but the ally standing next to him?
"I'll get him for you!" Gary shouted, fla bursting from his feet as he surged forward once more, climbing the mountain with speed and fire at his heels.
Lupus turned, firing off energized claws from his fingers, aiming to blast Gary off course. But each strike missed.
"You said you wanted to talk!" Gary yelled. "But you're the one who told my dad that two Alphas had to fight. That no matter what, it was our destiny!"
As he charged, the dallion around Gary's neck burned hotter, brighter, searing against his chest.
