Chapter 65- Happiness

"... Than...k you..." Fiona muttered with great difficulty as her head slumped down a bit. So, Elio helped raise it again and adjust her position. The way he gently touched her and carefully avoided any possible painful spot made Fiona even more confused. His warmth, his caring nature, and the way he didn’t seem bothered or annoyed whatsoever were shocking.

She was aware that Elio was also in great pain, and he was shirtless and cold. He was also terrified since he could not really fight, and so he could not really protect her. Yet, the only feeling he conveyed to her was assurance and confidence. For so reason, even though she knew that the situation was horrendous, she still didn’t feel like they were dood.

Elio just seed that reliable. A feeling not many people in the world gave her, even when they’re way stronger than Elio. As if this boy was bound to always find a way out, a solution, or pull a miracle only he could pull off.

"Sigh..." Cracking his neck, Elio sat down again and exhaled. His desire to sleep right there and then was the strongest he ever felt in his life, but he forced himself to stay awake since there was no ti or place for that. They weren’t safe whatsoever.

’I wonder how long it will take before they find us. Even if they can track Fiona, this forest is so massive, it will take so ti for sure.’ He mused as he looked at the outside world. Morning was barely starting, and the sun was peeking slowly at them from the other side.

The atmosphere was calming, surprisingly so. The two sat in silence for a while, just taking a break and trying to understand what happened earlier.

’That vampire... Why did he do that?’ Elio frowned. ’But, why did I also not feel scared of him? I didn’t feel a single shred of fear...’

That idea confused him greatly. He doesn’t even know that vampire, nor did he see his face. How could he know him? And how could he not be scared when Fiona herself was terrified and barely able to keep her composure against that monster?

Then, when he stabbed Fiona, he felt sothing else that he couldn’t wrap his head around... Elio could swear that the man didn’t do it to kill Fiona. If anything, it almost seed like he didn’t want to kill her and rather avoided that.

After all, a stab like that should be deadly. Elio didn’t know how that could even be possible, but the vampire could’ve deliberately made it so that it is a very deep and serious injury, but not enough to be deadly.

Then, those last words he said before disappearing. ’Let him shine too.’

’What did he an by that? Shine? How would I shine?’ Elio asked himself, falling deeper and deeper into his own world. This just seed like such an intriguing case. What did that vampire want from him? And why did he know about him in the first place? He had just awakened not that long ago; surely that wasn’t a long enough ti for him to be exposed?

Hell, he didn’t even do anything that should have gotten him exposed in the first place.

’Ugh, I don’t get it at all. There are too many things I don’t know yet, and his appearance seems just so sudden as far as I’m concerned. Fiona didn’t seem to recognize him either, which makes it even more confusing.’

"Hey... E...lio..."

At that mont, Elio snapped out of his thoughts as he heard Fiona call for him. He quickly turned around and asked. "Are you ok? Do you need sothing?"

However, the girl shook her head as she breathed in. "You’re... ri...ght..." She muttered.

"Huh? What do you an?"

"Cough, cough..." Fiona coughed weakly. "I am... not... happy..." She muttered as she closed her eyes. "I never... was..."

Her words made Elio’s eyes widen slowly. He took a second to recover before he asked. "Umm, why are you saying that now, Fiona?"

"Because... cough, I have... thought about it... I... never... did anything... That makes... happy..."

Her voice, as weak as it was, still carried imnse bitterness. Perhaps this situation helped her realize how truly wrong she was. Feeling death approaching her, Fiona’s mind started looking back at her past.

She searched for happy monts, for any mories she could cherish if she died. But, shockingly, she found none. She wished deep down that there was anything from her past she could onto dearly. But, all she saw was a robotic Fiona, a person with no emotions, just doing everything right, being hailed as a prodigy and the hope of Vaylor but never truly lived her childhood.

The pain that thought filled her heart with was indescribable. She had lied to herself so much. She was never happy, and she never liked carrying all this heavy weight just because she had to. But, what other choice did she have? She had to, so she doesn’t suffer the sa pain she suffered all those years ago.

She had taken an oath of blood on herself that she would save everyone, with no exceptions. If she doesn’t fulfill that, her purpose was aningless.

However, she cannot hide from that reality anymore. She was not happy whatsoever. Even if she didn’t believe it was necessary, and even if she simply didn’t care... That didn’t hide the fact that she just didn’t like it.

Hearing that, Elio pursed his lips before he turned away. "You know, Fiona. I was always the sa, just like you, albeit with nowhere near the sa responsibility. Being born into a poor family, I had to sleep hungry many nights of my life. I always felt that I had the responsibility to get my grandmother and out of that ss... I always worked hard, never played with kids my age, and just tried to find part-ti jobs to help as much as possible." He said.

"..." Fiona listened quietly, staring down.

"As I grew up, and as my confidence disappeared, I had to leave the city to study. My life beca worse; I dreaded waking up every morning, and I hated everything about it. But I thought that my happiness didn’t matter. I had to do what I had to do, and I still believe the sa way, but..." Elio exhaled as he turned to look at Fiona. "eting you has changed that idea in my head."

"..." Fiona’s eyes flashed with a surprised glint.

"Seeing this new world you introduced to. I realized that, deep down, I wanted to try sothing new. I wanted to do sothing for myself and not just for the greater good. I wanted to be for once and not suffer because of it." He laughed awkwardly as he rubbed the back of his head, wincing in pain when he realized that he had hurt his head when he fell earlier.

"E... lio..." Fiona muttered in disbelief.

"So, I really owe you my life, in more ways than you could think. If I didn’t et you, I would’ve lived a very miserable life. I know myself."

"..."

"Thank you so much, Fiona." He said. "You have really saved . And I hope that you two, would find that happiness while still doing what you need to do."
