"I'll take this statue," Gao Fei said. "Brother He, could you part with it?"
"Take it," He Hentian said generously, waving his hand. "If you like it, just take it." He Hentian had also taken a fancy to the statue and was planning to take it back for research, but when Gao Fei asked for it, he could only relinquish it. In his heart, friendship always ca first.
It had to be said, that secret technique for altering mories was so powerful, it had completely changed He Hentian.
"Then I won't be polite," Gao Fei said, as he waved his hand and put the statue into the storage ring.
"Let's keep looking, see if there are any other treasures," He Hentian suggested.
"If we co across any treasures, they're yours. I absolutely won't compete with you for them," Gao Fei said with a chuckle.
The two continued to wander about for the next while, searching for treasures that caught their eye.
"Huh? Is this a door?" Gao Fei stopped in his tracks, looking ahead with curiosity.
He Hentian ca over and scrutinized it carefully for a mont. "It looks like a door. You wait here; I'll go check it out." Since He Hentian's cultivation was higher than Gao Fei's, he would investigate unfamiliar objects first.
Directly in front of them was a wall with a faint shadow on it. At first glance, it seed unremarkable, but upon a second look, one could see the shadow was different, with four edges, appearing like a door…
He Hentian walked quickly over, reached out to push the shadow, and with a "creak," the shadow fell backward, revealing a pitch-dark space. His face lit up with excitent: "It really is a door! Haha… Such a concealed door ans they don't want it to be found; there must be a great treasure behind it! Let's go, treasure hunting." He Hentian called out, then stepped into the dark space.
He went in quickly, and ca out just as fast, rushing out with a face full of panic, his body still trembling as though he had been terrified by sothing.
Gao Fei wondered what could have frightened He Hentian.
"It's terrible, truly terrible!" He Hentian ran up to Gao Fei, shaking, and said, "I was so scared, truly scared to death!"
"What did you see?" Gao Fei asked, confused. "What frightened you so much?"
"I saw Yanwang… the King of the Underworld..."
"What are you saying! The King of the Underworld? Are you dreaming?"
"No! I wasn't dreaming! I really saw the King of the Underworld, and not just him, but also Judges, ox-headed and horse-faced demons… Ah, so many Netherworld ssengers… It really scared to death…" He Hentian's face turned pale, and his forehead was covered in cold sweat.
"Are you sure you weren't seeing things?" Gao Fei frowned. "This is the Human World; how could the King of the Underworld be here? You must have seen it wrong!"
"I didn't see it wrong; I saw it for real." He Hentian spoke with lingering fear. "There really was the King of the Underworld. Just now he glared at ; that one glance nearly scared the life out of . The aura of the King of the Underworld is truly formidable." He said, wiping the sweat off his forehead.
Seeing He Hentian in such a state of panic, Gao Fei began to doubt, could there really be the King of the Underworld? Judges? Ox-headed and horse-faced demons? Netherworld ssengers? What a joke, how is that possible? This is the Human World, not hell; how could the King of the Underworld and Judges possibly co to the Human World? It's absolutely impossible!
But… what had He Hentian seen? Whatever it was that could scare He Hentian to such an extent, it must be no ordinary thing.
The best course of action was to go in and check it out, to see for himself what was inside. In an instant, Gao Fei made his decision, knowing that hearing is deceptive, seeing is believing. Stepping in to have a look would reveal the truth inside, and with that thought, Gao Fei stepped forward.
"Hey, what are you doing!" He Hentian was scared to death, "Don't go in there! If we anger the Lord of the Underworld, we're both going to suffer."
"The Lord of the Underworld definitely won't show up here," Gao Fei shook his head, "What you saw was a fake, an imposter, I'm going to expose them now."
"Don't go, co back..." No matter how He Hentian tried to persuade him, Gao Fei wouldn't listen.
Soon, Gao Fei had entered the pitch-dark space, and then didn't co out for a long ti.
"Why isn't he coming out? He hasn't t with disaster, has he?" He Hentian paced back and forth anxiously, "Gao Fei! Can you hear ? If you can hear , respond!" He Hentian yelled several tis at the top of his lungs, but received no response, "Damn it! Gao Fei must have encountered danger!" He Hentian was tempted to rush in to look for Gao Fei, yet he also feared encountering danger himself, and for a mont didn't know what to do.
Just then, a series of footsteps emanated from the dark space. Under He Hentian's hopeful gaze, a man walked out—bushy eyebrows, big eyes, an imposing aura—it was Gao Fei.
"Oh! You finally ca out!" He Hentian was both surprised and delighted, "What did you encounter inside? Did you see the Lord of the Underworld? The Judge? Ox-Head and Horse-Face? The Netherworld ssengers?"
Gao Fei said with a strange expression, "I saw them."
"They didn't give you a hard ti?"
"Give a hard ti?"
"Yeah! You didn't confront them, did you?"
"Confront?" Gao Fei laughed lightly, "They're all fakes! You've been deceived."
"Fakes?" He Hentian was stunned, "They're fake? How is that possible?"
"Would I lie to you?" Gao Fei said, "The Lord of the Underworld, the Judge, the Ox-Head and Horse-Face, the Netherworld ssengers that you saw are all statues, intricately carved to the point where they look real."
"Statues?" He Hentian was dumbfounded, "I was scared stiff by a bunch of statues? This... this... is it really just statues?" He Hentian still couldn't quite believe it.
"Co on, I'll take you in to see for yourself," Gao Fei didn't bother to explain further and pulled He Hentian towards the dark space.
As they entered the pitch-dark space, a chilly Yin Wind blew around them, causing Gao Fei and He Hentian to involuntarily shudder.
"It's really cold in here," Gao Fei cursed softly, "Outside is warm and cozy, but here it's freezing to the bone, like two different worlds." After taking dozens of steps, Gao Fei stopped and pointed ahead, "Open your eyes wide and see clearly, are they real people, or are they statues?"
Looking in the direction Gao Fei was pointing, one could see a dozen figures. Sitting in the center was a big fat man, wearing a crown, with a dark and stern face, donned in a python robe, exuding a strong murderous Qi, bearing a nine-tenths resemblance to the legendary Lord of the Underworld. Beside him sat another, dressed like a scholar, his face as pale as jade, holding a large brush in his hand, with a solemn expression and not prone to laughter, sowhat resembling the legendary Judge. In addition, there were a group of people standing on both sides, among which two were particularly noticeable—one with an ox head, the other with a horse face. Since ancient tis, it is believed that Ox-Head and Horse-Face are Underworld ssengers in charge of leading the souls of the dead.
Surrounded by darkness, with gales of Yin Wind, one would easily be petrified by the scene ahead.
In reality, upon closer inspection, so signs would reveal the truth, since none of them would move; they were all lifeless, carved from special materials. Placed in the dark underground, they indeed could frighten people, probably a trick by the tomb's owner to scare off any Tomb Robbers.
The fact proved that He Hentian was indeed frightened by them.
