Chapter 191: We’re Surrounded

"I don’t think that’s Dominion. If it were, he’d already be dead."

Dominion was not feared simply because of their money or their numbers. It wasn’t even because the organization had been operating underground for so long. It was because their people were capable, and the consequences of standing in their way were unimaginable.

They were evil.

Ashley narrowed her eyes at the injured Khan, and sohow, seeing the amount of blood on the man made her gut uneasy.

"Tch," one of the n clicked his tongue, ignoring her as he focused on stopping Khan’s bleeding. "I don’t know what the fuck is going on, but right after I went after Nelek, we found him like this."

Nelek — the first one who had stord out over Ashley’s rambling — went pale as he kept his eyes on Khan.

"Khan, hey! Hey! Don’t close your eyes!" Nelek shook Khan’s shoulder, trying to keep him conscious. "Fuck — stop the bleeding!"

"I’m trying!" the other man, who had followed Nelek outside, shouted back.

He moved quickly, using whatever he could find to stanch the wound. anwhile, the last man standing near the window hurried over to his comrade.

"It’s probably Dominion," he said in a ragged breath. "Fuck! We’ve got to get out of here!"

He crossed the room, grabbed a rifle, and slung it over his shoulder. He also snatched up a few of their bags before heading back toward the other two, who were still focused on their injured comrade.

Ashley watched the situation quietly, growing uneasy about how fast things had shifted. More than confused, her gut was telling her sothing was off. She couldn’t pin it down yet, but sothing about the entire sequence of events told her that sothing was very wrong.

Glancing at the chopstick that had fallen near her earlier, she reached for it with her foot and quietly closed her hand around it.

"If you’re done in there, move him. We can’t waste a second!" the third man called urgently, already heading back toward Ashley.

He grabbed her shoulder and yanked her to her feet, then pressed a rifle to her temple.

"Don’t give us any trouble," he warned under his breath. "Or I might just kill you."

Ashley nodded, letting him grip her arm as he pulled her along. But with her ankles still tied, she caught her foot and nearly fell. His hold on her arm was the only thing that kept her upright.

"What the —"

"Sorry — my feet." Ashley hunched over and glanced up at him. "They’re tied. How am I supposed to walk?"

The man’s face tightened with irritation, then he looked down and realized she wasn’t being clever. Her feet were bound together, and even if she tried to hop, she’d only slow them down.

"I’m going to untie your feet, but —"

"You’ll kill

if I run," Ashley finished for him with a nod. "I understand. I won’t run."

She smiled, then stopped when he glared at her.

As he crouched down to untie her ankles, Ashley turned her attention to the other two, who were finishing up with their injured comrade.

That’s fast, she thought, watching the man who had treated the wound. Is he a doctor? He’s impressive. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone in Dominion stop bleeding this severe this quickly.

She was impressed — though then again, these n had managed to abduct her right under Dominion’s nose and were still breathing. That alone said sothing.

"Khan, we’re getting out of here —" Nelek stopped when Khan opened his eyes weakly.

Khan’s breathing was heavy and labored, his complexion already ashen. He reached up and grabbed Nelek’s arm, his mouth moving, but no sound ca out.

"Don’t talk yet!" the man who had treated him said. "Nelek, get the car. I’ll carry him."

Nelek nodded and was about to move when Khan’s hand tightened around his arm.

"Khan," Nelek said quietly, and all three turned to him.

Khan steadied his breath and, summoning what little strength he had left, managed to say, "Leave... ."

Ashley’s brows rose as she studied the other three, whose expressions darkened.

"What?" the man who had just untied her snapped. "What the fuck are you saying?"

"It’s not... it’s not Dominion, like she said." Khan lifted his weary eyes toward Ashley. "It’s... a trap."

For a mont, none of the three n seed to understand. As for Ashley, the words both piqued her curiosity and partially confird what she’d already been feeling.

Khan closed his eyes briefly, wincing against the pain even through the painkiller. When he opened them again, he looked at each of his colleagues in turn, then settled on Nelek — the one who had been most opposed to this mission from the start.

"The old man’s dying," he breathed. "And... the fucker wants to take us all with him."

Ashley didn’t fully grasp what Khan ant, but she could see that the other three did. The way their eyes widened and their breath caught was enough to tell her one thing.

My abductors are in the sa boat as I am now... I guess?

She pressed her lips together, unbothered. Death, blood — she had long been desensitized to it. Marshal had made sure of that, letting her learn from the ugliest corners of their world until she had grown too used to it to feel much at all. She simply watched as things unfolded around her.

Still, her eyes drifted to the broken window across the room.

"Hey," she said, staring at it. "Earlier, you said this wasn’t just a kidnapping for ransom. That wasn’t a joke, was it?"

"Shut up..." Nelek’s voice wavered. The man beside her shot her a glare.

"I told you to shut it!" he snapped, reaching into his pocket for sothing to cover her mouth.

But before he could find anything, Ashley spoke again, her eyes still fixed on the window.

"How big is your group?" she asked, then turned to look at the man beside her and then at those on the floor. "Is it just the four of you?"

What ca was nothing but silence.

She turned back to the window. Outside, she could make out cars pulling up and figures moving in.

"If so," she humd, "I wonder who those are."

The man beside her crossed to the window and looked out. His eyes went wide.

"Shit!" He spun back toward the others. "We’re surrounded!"
