The bathroom on the second floor of Onyx House was the one luxury the architects had actually gotten right. Deep soaking tub carved from dark stone, fed by pipes that sohow pulled geothermally heated water from the volcanic island beneath us. Steam rose from the surface in lazy curls that fogged the narrow window and turned the overhead light into a soft, diffused glow.

I lowered myself into the water one agonizing inch at a ti.

My ribs scread first. Then my shoulder. Then my lower back, which had apparently been holding a grudge since the Reyna fight and chose this exact mont to cash in every complaint it had been saving. The heat sank through skin and into muscle and bone, dissolving knots I hadn’t known existed and loosening joints that had been grinding against each other for hours.

I sank until the water reached my collarbone and closed my eyes.

For exactly eleven seconds, the world was perfect.

No gods watching. No System notifications blinking at the edge of my consciousness. No cosmic audience grading my performance. No five soul-bonded won with competing schedules and overlapping territorial instincts. No tournant bracket. No conspiracy. No VHC surveillance. No Julian Valerius with his daddy issues. No Reyna Cabana with her lightning and her grin that did things to my blood pressure I refused to examine.

Just hot water and silence and the distant hum of Onyx House settling around like a living thing breathing in its sleep.

Eleven seconds.

Then the door opened.

I didn’t open my eyes. Didn’t need to. The bond with my familiar pulsed warm and insistent at the base of my skull, broadcasting her location with the subtlety of a foghorn. Also, the faint crackle of static electricity that followed Maki everywhere tickled the hair on my arms.

"No."

"Master hasn’t even heard what Maki wants."

"No."

"Maki just wants to help Master relax."

"I am relaxed. I was relaxed. For eleven seconds."

The sound of fabric hitting tile. A soft whisper of skin against air. The water shifted as weight pressed against the edge of the tub.

I opened one eye.

Maki stood next to the bath completely naked, her dark hair falling past her shoulders in a black cascade that caught the steam and the light in ways that defied casual physics. Her two tails swished behind her in lazy arcs, the tips curling and uncurling like they were tasting the humid air. Cat ears perked forward, triangular and alert against the crown of her head, twitching every few seconds as they tracked sounds I couldn’t hear.

Her body was absurd. There was no other word for it. Maki was five foot three and built like a sculptor’s fever dream, all impossible curves compressed into a petite fra that should not have been able to contain them. Her waist was narrow enough that my hands could nearly span it. Her hips flared wide below. Her breasts were heavy and full, the kind that made shirts into structural engineering challenges, and they hung bare and warm in the steamy bathroom light with droplets of condensation already gathering along the undersides.

Her skin was porcelain pale, smooth as poured cream except for the faintest dusting of freckles across her collarbones that I had never noticed before. Gold-hazel eyes with vertical slit pupils watched with an expression that combined adoration and calculation in a way that was uniquely, infuriatingly Maki.

"Master is staring."

"Master is too tired to look away."

"Good."

She stepped into the bath.

I should have stopped her. I should have said sothing sharp and commanding. I should have invoked the rules about personal space and the carefully negotiated boundaries of the familiar contract. I should have rembered that Natalia had promised the evening and would absolutely detect Maki’s scent on through so combination of supernatural jealousy and telekinetic forensics.

I did none of these things.

Because I was broken. Every bone in my body felt like it had been individually removed, beaten with a hamr, and reinstalled slightly crooked. My mana reserves sat at single digits. My ribs were held together by Emi’s healing and a regenerator brace and sheer bloody-minded refusal to acknowledge structural failure. I had fought three fights in one afternoon against an aristocrat, a lightning prodigy, and the woman I loved, all on national television, and then walked ho like it was nothing because showing weakness in front of seventeen teenagers would undo months of careful image managent.

I was spent. Completely and absolutely drained of the energy required to argue with a naked catgirl.

Maki sank into the water across from , and the displacent raised the level to my chin. She settled with a contented sigh, her tails disappearing beneath the surface while her ears gave a satisfied flick.

"There. See? Maki is just relaxing with Master. Nothing improper."

"You’re naked."

"Maki does not own bathing suits. This is Master’s fault for not purchasing any."

"I bought you three."

"They were ugly."

"They were normal swimsuits."

"Exactly. Ugly."

She moved closer through the water. Not fast. Not aggressive. Just a slow, inevitable drift across the tub until her knees bumped mine beneath the surface and her face was close enough that I could count individual lashes. Water beaded along her collarbones and gathered in the hollow of her throat. Her ears pressed flat against her skull in the submissive position she used when she wanted sothing.

"Master fought so hard today."

"Uh-huh."

"Maki watched from the stands. In cat form. Nobody knew Maki was there."

"I noticed."

"Master always notices Maki." She said this like it was the greatest complint anyone had ever received. Her pupils dilated wide, the vertical slits expanding until the gold of her irises was almost entirely consud by black. "Master looked so strong. Maki’s heart was going very fast."

Her hands found my shoulders beneath the water. Small hands. Warm from the bath. Her fingers pressed into the knotted muscle where my neck t my trapezius, and sothing inside cracked open like a fault line releasing pressure.

Not a sexual crack. A therapeutic one. The kind of release that happened when soone found the exact point where tension had been building for days and applied the right amount of force.

I groaned. Full volu. Completely involuntary.

Maki’s ears shot straight up.

"Master likes that."

"That’s not... don’t make it weird."
