Jason checked the security caras but found no one standing at the door. anwhile, the doorbell continued to ring. He briefly debated whether it would be best to call the police, but by the ti they arrived, whoever was outside could already be inside.
"I knew I should have at least taken a judo or boxing class..." he muttered bitterly, hurrying into the kitchen to grab a knife.
With the blade in hand, Jason approached the front door slowly, every muscle tensed and ready to strike. He suspected the culprit had returned to the scene of the cri, lending weight to the theory he had been considering. When he flung the door open with full intent to attack, there was no one there.
"Hey, I’m actually behind you," a deep, calm male voice said from within the house.
Jason flinched and spun around instantly.
A tall, handso man stood in the middle of the parlour with his hands tucked into his pockets. He wore a black sweatshirt and black trousers, carried a small backpack, and smiled casually at Jason. He had curly black hair, green eyes, and looked slightly younger than him.
’How the hell did he get inside so quickly and without a sound?’
Jason raised the knife and aid it at the stranger, his gaze hard and cold.
"Who the hell are you?"
The man pointed at himself, looking mildly confused.
"? I’m Nathan. Wait... aren’t you Jason Brown? The client I’m supposed to be providing security for?"
Perplexed, Jason lowered his weapon.
’He is the bodyguard Ella sent? But how did he get here so quickly, and how did he even find ? I am certain I never sent my location to her...’
Nathan noticed the confusion on Jason’s face and chuckled.
"You can call Ella if you don’t trust . I had just finished a commission when my boss contacted with another one. Yay, more money. I was a bit impatient, so I tracked down my client with barely any information apart from a na. Within an hour, I realised we were both in the sa area. Hehehe."
Jason’s expression darkened.
’He talks far too much. And he clearly worships money. Is this man really capable of protecting ? I am starting to think I made a poor decision again today.’
He pulled out his phone and called Ella. anwhile, Nathan had already made himself comfortable, flopping onto the sofa and grabbing a banana from the fruit bowl, which he began eating enthusiastically.
"Damn, this is good. I love this villa, by the way. I hope this is your permanent place, broooooo."
Jason ignored him completely and walked into the kitchen, waiting for Ella to answer. A mont later, the call connected.
"Hey, Jason. Do you need sothing?"
"No. I am just calling to confirm the bodyguard you sent. He has arrived, and I need to ask... are you certain this man can even protect a cat?" Jason asked quietly.
"Oh, so Nathan has arrived? Don’t worry, baby boy. I can assure you he is among the best of the best. He talks a lot and loves money, but when it cos ti to work, you will see a completely different side of him. I am honestly impressed he managed to locate you so quickly with only your na."
’...Yes, but that is exactly what worries .’
"Alright. Thank you, Ella. I will repay you properly."
On the other end of the line, Ella smiled audibly.
"I know you will. Co and see next weekend."
"Huh? Um... alright."
Jason ended the call and turned back towards the parlour, only to realise that the so called best bodyguard was no longer anywhere in sight.
’Where did he go now? I do not even have the luxury of sulking. I need to find the person responsible.’
His eyes hardened with a quiet fury simring beneath the surface. What had been done to his family was unforgivable, and he had already decided there would be repaynt. No one touched his won and walked away unscathed.
Suddenly, he spotted Nathan in the parlour, assembling a firearm with sharp efficiency. Within seconds, the weapon was complete. Nathan’s expression was stern, a piece of gum moving slowly between his teeth.
"...What the hell?"

Later that night, Jason spoke with Layla about her day after she had called to check on him, even asking if they could et again. Naturally, he had to find a way to turn her down indirectly for the week ahead, as he still needed ti to adjust to the loss he had suffered. Although he and Angela had not been particularly close and had only slept together once, after which she disappeared for nearly a year without contact, Jason still considered her family and felt her death deeply. He knew the others would be affected even more than he was, which was why it had to remain a secret. It was better for them to believe she was alive sowhere and had simply ghosted them than to know she was dead.
"Alright, Layla. I’ll call you back later."
"Anyti, Jason. Thanks for making my night."
"Sure. That’s my duty to you."
"Haha."
The call ended soon after, and Jason stood in the kitchen with his arms folded, watching Nathan sit on the couch with one leg crossed over the other, a bag of crisps in hand, watching a film while stuffing his face. No matter how closely Jason observed him, he could not see a trace of seriousness, apart from earlier that day when Nathan had been handling the gun. As Ella had said, this man was only serious when carrying out his task. It was clear he was not a conventional bodyguard, but rather sothing else entirely, perhaps a rcenary or a highly trained assassin.
Nathan clearly already had information about him, while Jason knew nothing about Nathan beyond his na. When he had asked, Ella told him it was confidential. In the end, that did not concern him much.
There was, however, one thing Jason despised more than anything else, and that was relying on soone else for his own safety. He found himself regretting many of his life choices, but he had no option but to accept the consequences now.
He sighed, walked into the parlour, and sat down on the hammock with a stoic expression, scrolling through the ssages on his phone.
Without warning, the system interface appeared before his eyes.
