The morning sun stretched softly over Novan City, casting a golden hue across the quiet neighborhood as Ethan stepped out of his house.

The air was crisp, the sky clear, but his heart carried the weight of uncertainty.

Too much had happened over the past week. And today, he hoped, would bring answers. A clarity in a world that kept getting harder to understand.

He had just finished breakfast with his family. The mont had been peaceful, almost sacred.

Warm food, light chatter, the familiar scent of ho. It was exactly what he needed before leaving.

But even in that calm, he'd been forced to lie. He told them he'd be gone for a few days on a business trip.

The reactions were mixed.

Though Ethan had often been away before, as a university student, then as the head of Nova Tech, this felt different.

After everything that had happened, especially the incident with Jordan and the Moore family, the worry in their eyes lingered longer than usual.

Elise, his mother, didn't say much. She never did when she was worried. Her eyes did the speaking for her. Aaron, his father, had offered his usual blend of warmth and caution.

She reminded him to stay out of trouble, keep his phone close, and trust his instincts.

Jacob and Lily, the youngest, had bombarded him with playful questions about his "trip." Their excitent made it even harder to maintain the lie.

He smiled through it, nodded where needed, but every word tugged at sothing deeper.

Now, they were all standing by the porch, waving at him with bright, trusting faces. The kind of smiles that made a promise feel like a vow.

"Stay safe, Ethan," Elise said softly, her hand resting gently on his shoulder. She didn't try to hide the concern in her voice.

"I will, Mom," Ethan replied, returning the smile, though his didn't quite reach his eyes. "It's just work. I'll be back soon."

Lily gave a playful jump. "Bring us sothing cool, okay?"

Ethan chuckled. "Deal."

He gave them one last wave before stepping into the car waiting by the curb.

After Mark was captured, he had a new bodyguard and a driver.

As the vehicle pulled away, Ethan turned to look through the rear window. His family grew smaller with every passing second. He didn't speak. He didn't blink. He just watched, until they disappeared from view.

Then, he quietly clenched his fists.

'No matter what's waiting out there… I'll protect them. Always.'

When he arrived at Nova Tech, the atmosphere shifted. The mont he stepped inside, the air felt colder, more focused.

Maya was already waiting in the lobby.

She wore her usual black coat, crisp and clean, her presence calm yet commanding. Her gaze t his the mont he walked in. There was sothing reassuring about it. Serious, but grounded.

"Morning," she said, falling into step beside him as they moved toward the elevators.

"Morning," Ethan echoed, his pace matching hers. "Everything ready?"

Maya gave a small nod. "Yes. Ezra's already stationed near your family. Yamal is overseeing Nova Tech from the secondary node."

She looked at Ethan before adding, "We've also placed more guards in rotation, low-tier Nesis operatives, but good enough to hold the line if anything unexpected happens."

"Coming from Nesis?" Ethan asked.

Maya nodded. "Well, you've caught the eyes of Nesis and this is the least that we can do to ensure that everything is good while you're away."

Ethan digested the information quietly. "Appreciate it."

Maya glanced at him sideways, studying his face as the elevator doors slid open. "You're quieter than usual. Nervous?"

"Not nervous," he answered, stepping inside. His tone was steady. "Just… focused."

He paused, then added, "And curious. I've heard so much about Nesis. I want to know what they really are... what I'm walking into. If this is the organization behind all of you, then maybe I need to understand it... to understand myself better."

Maya said nothing at first. She pressed the button for the rooftop and waited for the elevator to begin its quiet ascent.

"You will," she finally said. "Starting today."

The elevator doors opened with a soft chi, revealing the rooftop access hallway. Neither of them spoke as they stepped out, their footsteps echoing faintly against the concrete.

The silence wasn't awkward. It carried weight, anticipation building with every step they took.

As they pushed through the final door and stepped onto the rooftop, the wind t them first. It was cool and steady, tugging at Ethan's coat.

Waiting near the edge was a sleek black helicopter, its design sharp and modern. The rotors turned in slow, deliberate rhythm, already ward up and ready for departure. A uniford pilot stood nearby, doing final checks with practiced efficiency.

A Nesis operative in tactical gear approached Maya and handed her a thin dossier. She flipped it open without a word, eyes scanning quickly through the contents.

"This seems to be more serious than what I've imagined," he muttered as he saw the operative and pilot.

Maya chuckled but she had a few things he needed to hear from the operative first.

After a brief nod of approval, she tucked it under her arm and turned back to Ethan.

"Yes. This is serious, Ethan, and this won't be a short trip," she said, voice raised slightly over the hum of the engine. "Once we reach the base, you'll go through an evaluation. They'll want to see what you're capable of."

"Evaluation?"

"Yes. They want to see your skills, your instincts, your control. It's routine."

Ethan glanced at her, brow raised. "And by 'they,' I assu you an Nesis leadership?"

Maya smirked just slightly, not enough to soften her seriousness. "Sothing like that. You've already earned their interest. But don't take that as approval just yet. Nesis doesn't hand out trust easily."

"Let get sothing straight." He crossed his arms as the wind tugged at his sleeves, his eyes not leaving hers. "I'm not looking for approval. I just want to know what I'm getting into. What Nesis really stands for."

"You'll get your answers," she replied. "But let give you this for free."

She paused before adding, "Nesis isn't built on trust or loyalty. It's built on necessity. Everyone in it has their own goal, their own reasons for staying. Our paths happen to align right now, but that doesn't an they always will."

Ethan held her gaze for a few monts, then gave a slow nod. "Thanks for the warning."

Maya turned back to the helicopter. "Let's go."

They climbed aboard, and within minutes, the aircraft lifted from the rooftop, rising steadily into the sky.

Ethan looked through the window beside him, watching as Novan City shrank beneath them. The skyline he'd grown used to beca distant, the buildings like silent monunts far below. The farther they flew, the quieter it all felt inside him.

Maya sat beside him, arms folded, her eyes fixed straight ahead. Her expression was unreadable, as always.

The rhythmic thrum of the rotors filled the cabin, loud enough to drown out thoughts, but not strong enough to silence the ones that mattered.

Nesis.

Just a na, yet it carried so much weight. A secretive organization filled with people who'd saved his life, trained him, bled for him. But who were they really?

'What do they want from ?'

Ethan's thoughts drifted to Steve, still fighting for recovery in the hospital. To Jordan, trapped in unconscious silence. To Jessica, whose grief ran deeper than words. And to Mark, who was still missing, likely held captive sowhere by the LaRues.

Each of them had given sothing. Each of them had suffered. And he couldn't afford to let their pain be for nothing.

'I'll get the answers,' Ethan told himself. 'Whatever it takes.'

The road ahead wasn't clear. But this ti, he wasn't standing on the sidelines.

He was stepping in.

Not just to fight.

But to change the ga. On his terms.
