Chapter 782
Anton was looking at the walls of the city of Nermador, which was the capital city of Andora in the distance. Just like the other humongous cities and kingdoms that he had been to in this world, the walls were massive. When he thought about it, he had never seen a city that did not have walls and wondered if the cities and kingdoms expected to undergo war now and again to make walls a necessity.
Still, Anton was glad that they did have walls because now, they were all being fully utilized against the Undead Coalition’s attack. According to Oswald, the coalition was concentrating their attacks on Nermador because if the city fell, that ant that Andora fell, and once Andora fell, the Undead Coalition would start conquering the kingdoms on the eastern side of the Rendindura continent one by one.
The eastern gate, guarded by multitudes of powerful wizards and warriors, was calm. Anton knew that it was because the coalition’s attacks were on the other side of the city. Nevertheless, the road to arrive at Nermador was truly perilous. While he was walking from the town where he had left Delfin and his family, who were his guides, he was attacked by roaming undead several tis.
Those attacks made Anton think that the last town near Nermador would not survive for long. He was not too worried for Delfin, Eva, and Devin since Delfin said that they would leave the town the next day after they had sold all the at that they had hunted from the wilderness between the desert kingdom and this place.
Anton was also not worried too much about the survival of his previous guides since two dire wolves should be able to protect him. Based on his experience, the roaming undead on this side of Nermador was not too strong. At least compared to the dire wolves summoned from the golden tablets that he had made.
During their journey, Anton had gotten close to Devin and his parents and wondered if he should have given more than two dire wolves to them. Creating those golden tablets that summoned dire wolves was not too much of an effort for him. For so reason, a thought ca into his mind that he should not give them more than two so that people would not think that he was too overly generous, but then again, he had to admit that he already was too generous.
Anton then thought, why not be generous? He had the power and the ans, and in these trying tis, giving friends hope of survival was much better than focusing on epheral worries about what other people would think about him.
Since he had already left Delfin and his family, he shrugged and just wished them well and hoped that the two dire wolves were enough to protect them. Anton started walking towards the gate. He did not fly because he did not want to get attacked by the wizards on the walls of Nermador.
Once he was near the gate, there were still people entering the city, but there were only very few of them. Considering that there was only one town left, Anton expected that sooner or later, there would probably be almost none traveling the roads to Nermador once that last town fell.
After joining the small throng of people queuing to enter the city, Anton thought of what Oswald had said about the population inside the city of Nermador. Oswald told him that before, the number of wizards and warriors was only one-fourth of the whole population of the city, which was usually the normal rate in a powerful kingdom, but when the coalition attack, half of the mundane people managed to travel out of the city, so at that mont, half of the remaining population of Nermador were wizards, powerful ones at that, that stayed because they wanted to fight the undead, one fourth were skillful warriors and the last remaining portion was the mundane who chose to stay to support the remaining wizards and warriors in the city, probably because they were family mbers of the said wizards and warriors.
Oswald told Anton that it was not a problem for Nermador that all the towns nearby had disappeared, since inside the walls of the city were fields that produced food for the population of the city. With the wizards’ magic, it was easy enough for them to make sure that plants and animals would reproduce exponentially, so everyone in the city was still well fed.
Another effect of the attacks of the Undead Coalition was that the average power of wizards in Nermador grew, and not only that, but other wizards from other kingdoms ca to help defend the city from the undead, just like what Anton had intended to do.
When Anton finally reached the gate, the guards, who were powerful wizards, asked him his reason for coming to Nermador.
“My na is Anton. I’m a wandering Supre Rank Wizard. I was born in ndi. I ca here to join the fight against the undead.”
The guards nodded their understanding since his situation was not unique. Truth be told, more than half of the people entering the city were the sa as him, wizards and warriors who wanted to join the fight against the undead.
The guards let him in after telling him that he would need to undergo a spell that would be able to detect if there was any hint that he was a spy from the coalition.
“What would constitute that one is a spy?” Anton asked the guard who was leading him sowhere.
“Aside from the obvious of one being an undead, the spell would be able to detect if a wizard or a warrior is under a mind-controlling spell. Not only that, once the one being tested was willing to undergo questioning under the said spell, we would know if that person willingly joined the coalition,” The guard said.
“Were there any such thing? Living people who willingly beca a spy for the coalition?”
“Sadly, it’s more common these days. So wanted to beco powerful liches that would be allowed to beco a mber of the coalition’s council or sothing.”
Anton shook his head when he heard that. He knew that he should not have been surprised. The world consisted of all kinds of people, both good and evil. The guard brought him to a large room that had so arrays laid on the floor. The array was surrounded by twelve wizards, and based on their aura, half of them were Supre Rank wizards, and half were Invincible Rank wizards.
As per the guard’s instruction, Anton went to the center of the array, and the wizards started their spell. After a few seconds, a wizard proclaid that he was not a disguised undead, not under a mind-controlling spell, and that his wizardry rank did reach the Supre rank.
After that, a second spell, powered by the array, was cast on Anton, and the questioning started. The questions were the normal ones, like his identity and his reason for wanting to join the fight against the undead. The whole process did not last long, just around twenty minutes, and after that, he was instructed to go to the side door.
Anton then saw that another wizard entered the room and walked to the center of the array. He saw that it was the wizard queuing behind him.
Once he entered the door by the side, a guard was waiting for him there. The guard then led him outside the building and told him that he was now free to roam Nermador. Once he had rested and wanted to join the fight, he could then go to the recruitnt center, and anyone in the city would be able to point him to its location.
