Elena’s POV
Without warning, hands seized from behind. My body reacted before my mind could process the threat. I spun around and drove my fist straight into my attacker’s throat. The figure stumbled backward, crashing against the wall while clutching his neck and struggling to breathe.
"Leo," I said, recognizing him through the dim hallway light.
"Yeah. It’s . What the hell was that for?" he wheezed, still trying to catch his breath.
"How was I supposed to know it was you?" I shot back, my heart still pounding from the adrenaline rush.
The sound of our confrontation drew Damien and Gage from their rooms. They appeared in the hallway, both looking alert and ready for trouble.
"What’s happening?" Damien demanded, his eyes scanning the scene.
"Look in there," I said, gesturing toward my bedroom door.
Damien stepped forward and peered into my room. His head snapped back, his expression shifting to one of complete shock.
"Why are you here, Leo?" Gage asked, his voice tense.
"I spotted soone running from the house. Since you asked to keep Elena safe, I sent so of my warriors after the intruder and ca inside to check on her," Leo explained, rubbing his throat where I had struck him.
"He crept up behind and I hit him in the throat. I had no idea who it was," I said, feeling slightly guilty but not entirely apologetic.
"Don’t worry about that. Are you telling us soone did this while we were all ho?" Damien asked, his voice carrying a dangerous edge.
"That’s right. I watched him escape through the back door," Leo confird.
"I’ll check with the warriors," Gage said, already heading for the stairs.
As I turned to survey the damage again, I caught sight of two won lingering in the doorways of Damien and Gage’s rooms, clearly waiting for their company to return.
"Damien," one of them called out in a sultry voice.
"I’m occupied. Either wait or get dressed and leave," Damien replied curtly.
"Such a charming gentleman," I said with heavy sarcasm before stepping back into my destroyed room.
I began examining everything systematically, searching for any missing items. Nothing seed to be gone, which made the whole situation even more unsettling.
"So they broke in but didn’t steal anything," Damien observed, following inside.
"That’s how it appears. They left a ssage, but I wish they had been more direct. I can’t figure out what they’re trying to communicate," I said, frustration creeping into my voice.
"Do you think Marcus could be behind this?" Damien asked quietly, keeping his voice low.
"I don’t see how that’s possible. According to you, he believes I’m dead," I replied.
"I’ll believe that when I see concrete proof. He probably told that story because I’m the most likely person to assist you," he said.
"If that’s true and he has soone inside your pack feeding him information, then he already knows I’m alive. Unless this is sothing entirely different," I said.
"We can’t eliminate any possibilities," he agreed.
I started gathering my scattered belongings while Damien and Leo joined in cleaning up the ss. My clothes had been thrown everywhere, creating chaos throughout the room. While the two n were distracted with organizing, I discretely checked the back of my closet to ensure the book from Marcus’s pack remained hidden behind the false wall.
Relief flooded through when I found it still in place. That book was the only evidence Marcus would need to confirm I was still breathing. There was absolutely no way I could let that happen.
The longer I considered the situation, the more my thoughts returned to Marcus and Viviana. The realization hit harder each ti I need to keep my child far away from both of them.
I refused to let them take my baby and raise it as their own. That scenario was entirely possible if Marcus continued refusing to make his Luna. Since the baby would be his heir, he had every legal right to remove it from my custody. I couldn’t allow that to happen. Living without my child was unthinkable.
We spent the entire night restoring order to my room. When we finally finished, I went downstairs to make coffee, desperate for caffeine after the exhausting ordeal.
Gage returned empty-handed. His warriors hadn’t managed to track down whoever had fled from the house. The won who had been waiting for Damien and Gage eventually gave up and left in the early morning hours.
I supposed they grew tired of being ignored. Despite my repeated suggestions that Damien shouldn’t keep his girlfriend waiting, he always insisted she wasn’t his girlfriend. The distinction seed aningless to , but he was adamant about it.
As dawn broke, I sat in the kitchen with my coffee, trying to process what had happened. Soone had violated my personal space, destroyed my room, but taken nothing of value. The ssage was clear, even if the aning remained obscure. They wanted to know they could reach anywhere, anyti.
The thought sent chills down my spine. My hand instinctively moved to my stomach, where my child grew safely for now. Whatever gas were being played, whoever was behind this intrusion, I would protect my baby at all costs.
The morning light streaming through the windows did nothing to dispel the darkness that had settled over our situation. Soone was watching, waiting, planning their next move. I just had to figure out who and why before they struck again.
