Elena’s POV

The quiet that follows Asher’s final words carries weight, not because anyone thinks the matter is settled, but because we all know the next move will reshape everything in this room forever.

The extraction team leader studies now, his stance still professional but his attention razor-sharp, because my resistance didn’t crumble the way he planned, and unpredictability poses a greater threat to protocol than outright rebellion.

I hold the silence.

I draw air slowly into my lungs, feeling my ribcage expand as I use the steady rhythm to keep myself centered when my instincts want to take control, and I sense my wolf coiling tight instead of surging forward, ready for my command rather than demanding action.

"You want him," I state at last, my tone asured and clear, and I move just enough to create space without backing down. "You’ll take him on my terms."

The extraction leader’s eyes widen slightly, a flash of surprise breaking through his composure before he conceals it again.

"You lack the authority to impose conditions."

"I have it," I respond steadily, "because touching him without my terms transforms this from cooperation into forced compliance, and you understand exactly how that will appear when it reaches higher channels."

Asher angles his head toward slightly, enough that I feel the shift in his tension, but he stays quiet, because he grasps my strategy even if he doesn’t appreciate it.

Ruth draws a sharp breath next to , then steadies herself, recognizing my approach.

The extraction leader pauses, and that hesitation tells everything I need to know about the strength of my position.

"Na your terms," he says, his words clipped and controlled.

"First," I begin, raising one finger, "he stays within my visual range until he leaves this building, which ans no isolated hallways, no sealed vehicles, and no departures from the designated internal path."

"That complicates efficiency," he objects.

"So does a public investigation," I counter, and his jaw clenches.

"Second," I continue, "his restraints serve appearance only, aning they stay visible, removable, and unrestricting, because restricted movent makes this detention instead of escort."

"That violates standard procedure," he states.

"So does attempting extraction under disputed jurisdiction," I reply.

"Third," I say, this ti eting the eyes of his entire unit, "each team mber maintains full identification throughout, including active and unmodified body caras, and any recording interruption imdiately nullifies compliance."

The extraction leader’s gaze darts briefly to one of his officers, and I watch the ntal calculations play out in real ti.

"Fourth," I add, "you disclose the destination imdiately, not eventually, and any route changes require my advance approval."

"That cannot happen," he insists.

"It can," I correct him. "You simply prefer not to allow it."

The air thrums with tension, electronic systems humming while everyone holds their breath, realizing what’s unfolding here, because I’m neither refusing nor surrendering, and that middle ground breaks systems apart.

Asher adjusts his stance beside , slow and purposeful, centering himself the way he does when expecting restraint, and guilt flickers through before I push it down, because I cannot afford doubt right now.

The extraction leader releases air through his nostrils. "If we accept these terms, you will withdraw opposition."

"I will cooperate," I say precisely, because language carries consequences, "provided you maintain compliance."

Another silence.

Then he gives a single nod. "Terms accepted."

The room responds instantly, tension shifting without disappearing, because forced cooperation never feels like security when shaped under duress.

"Move forward," he commands.

His unit advances, slower now, careful and restricted, and when one approaches to secure Asher’s wrists, I intercede again, adjusting the positioning, monitoring closely as the bands settle loose enough for visibility without restriction.

"Watch that pressure," I say softly. "That one’s cutting circulation."

The officer adjusts without protest, and I store that detail, because every small concession creates docuntation whether they plan it or not.

We start walking.

The corridor seems to stretch endlessly, fluorescent bulbs humming overhead, our footsteps ringing too loud against the walls, and I return to controlling my breathing as we move, anchoring myself in the feeling of forward motion, heel connecting with floor, maintaining rhythm, because routine prevents panic from overwhelming rational thought.

Asher moves alongside , bearing relaxed but watchful, and I avoid looking at him directly because eting his eyes will reveal too much.

The extraction unit maintains formation around us, their movents precise but constrained by my conditions, and I feel the weight of every step carrying us toward whatever waits beyond these walls.

Ruth follows behind, her presence steady and reassuring, a reminder that I’m not navigating this alone even when it feels like the decisions rest entirely on my shoulders.

"How much further," I ask without breaking stride.

"External access requires three more corridors," the leader responds, his tone neutral but I catch the underlying impatience.

The building feels different now, familiar spaces transford by the circumstances, and I realize how quickly environnt can shift when authority becos contested ground.

Asher’s breathing remains even beside , his composure intact despite the restraints, and I draw strength from his calmness while maintaining my vigilance over every detail of this careful choreography we’re performing.

Each step takes us closer to separation, but also deeper into the protection I’ve built through negotiation, and I focus on that rather than on what cos after we reach the exit.
