Dawn’s POV
Corbin tracked down after that interrogation they put through about the failed mission. Relief washed over when he confird what I already suspected - they didn’t think I was involved in whatever went wrong out there. Still, I couldn’t shake the curiosity about who they actually suspected was feeding information to the wolves.
The Captain himself told he never doubted my loyalty. Growing up on this base finally worked in my favor for once.
Corbin spent the better part of an hour reassuring that my career wasn’t over because our mission went sideways. What really helped ease my anxiety was learning that ours wasn’t the only operation that failed recently. Several teams had arrived at their targets to find empty compounds and abandoned territories.
At least I wasn’t cursed. Two failed missions in a row had questioning whether I was cut out for this life, despite everyone telling I was one of the most promising Hunters to co through this base in years.
That’s what Corbin believed anyway, and he’d trained more Hunters than anyone else here.
After Corbin finished his pep talk, I headed straight to the training room where Asher, Nico, and Koa were already deep into their workout routine. I grabbed so weights and joined them, letting the familiar burn in my muscles distract from everything else.
We hadn’t been training long when Talia sauntered into the room, her shirt deliberately rolled up to expose her toned stomach. She moved with the kind of confidence that demanded attention from every guy in the vicinity.
"Hey boys, I need soone to spot on the free weights over there," she purred, running her fingers along one of the support beams. "Any volunteers?"
The three guys exchanged glances that lasted a beat too long before Nico stepped forward, ever the gentleman.
"Sure thing. Let’s get you set up."
I watched them walk away, Talia’s hips swaying just a little too much for a casual workout session.
"Everything okay over there?" Asher asked, noticing my distraction.
"Yeah, just processing so things," I replied, adjusting my grip on the barbell.
"You know I’m here if you need to talk through whatever’s bothering you."
"I appreciate that. It’s more about the mission than anything personal."
"That was rough, but we’ll get them next ti," Asher said with conviction. "They can’t stay one step ahead of us forever."
"Exactly," Koa chid in between reps. "These wolves think they’re clever, but they’ll slip up eventually."
Sothing nagged at though, sothing I couldn’t quite put into words. "I feel like I still need to prove myself around here. I know they’ve seen train, they know what I’m capable of, but lately everything feels off."
Asher and Koa shared another one of those quick glances, the kind they thought I wouldn’t catch.
"What do you an by off?" Asher’s voice carried a note of concern that made look up from my weights.
"Like I’m not quite myself anymore. It’s hard to explain - almost like sothing’s shifting inside that I can’t control."
Before either of them could respond, another girl appeared asking Koa for help with her form. I rolled my eyes as he imdiately abandoned his workout to assist the suddenly helpless trainee.
The pattern was becoming ridiculous. These won transford into damsels in distress the mont they spotted Asher, Nico, or Koa in the training room.
"Let’s get out of here before the whole female population of the base decides they need personal training sessions," Asher muttered, clearly as annoyed as I was.
We spent the next few hours working on tactical drills in one of the outdoor training areas before heading to dinner. The rest of the evening passed in routine - shower, gear maintenance, and the usual banter in the bunkhouse.
I sat cross-legged on my bunk, flipping through the only book I owned while Asher lounged on his bed across from . That strange feeling continued to gnaw at , like sothing fundantal was changing in ways I couldn’t understand or explain. Going to the dical bay wasn’t an option - how could I explain a feeling? They’d probably ship off to the psychiatric evaluation faster than I could blink.
The last thing I needed was for anyone to question my ntal fitness for duty.
I must have fallen asleep reading because I woke to Asher gently shaking my shoulder, a blanket tucked under his arm.
"Co on, get dressed," he whispered in the darkness.
I smiled and nodded, pulling on my boots and grabbing my jacket without question. We’d done this dance before, and I was always ready for our midnight escapes.
We slipped off base undetected, making our way through the familiar path to our secret clearing. Asher spread the blanket on the soft grass and we settled down side by side, gazing up at the star-filled sky.
"Look at that moon," I breathed, srized by its bright fullness.
"Tomorrow night’s the full moon," Asher observed.
"It’s incredible out here. No pressure, no expectations, no one to impress." The peaceful silence wrapped around us like a protective barrier. "This is our sanctuary."
"Your personal paradise?" Asher teased gently.
"Maybe I don’t know what real paradise looks like, but if I had to guess, it would feel exactly like this."
"Paradise is wherever you decide it should be," he said softly.
"Then I’ve definitely found mine."
Asher turned toward , his expression suddenly serious. "Can I ask you sothing?"
"Always."
"What’s going on between you and Corbin?"
The question caught off guard. "He’s my trainer. What do you an?"
"He looks at you like you’re more than just another student, Dawn."
I frowned, genuinely confused. "I haven’t been here long enough for him to see as family or anything like that."
"Trust on this - he’s interested in you as more than a friend or trainee. You might be naive about a lot of things, but this isn’t sothing you should ignore."
The realization hit slowly as I replayed recent interactions with Corbin. Maybe Asher was right about the way Corbin looked at .
"Well, whatever he’s feeling, it’s not mutual," I admitted.
"Good." Asher propped himself up on his elbow, his eyes intense in the moonlight. "Because I’m about to do sothing, and I really don’t want you to punch for it."
My heart hamred against my ribs as Asher moved closer, his intention crystal clear. Every rule we’d been taught about fraternization flew out of my mind as his lips finally t mine.
The kiss sent electricity through my entire body, like every nerve ending had suddenly co alive. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer, letting myself get lost in the mont.
Forget the damn rules.
