Bai Jinxuan opened her eyes, her face wet.
It was just a dream.
She felt a sense of loss, already half a year in this world, and she didn’t know how her mother was faring. Her disappearance must have hurt her mother the most.
Lying there in a daze for a while, she hadn’t dreamt of the past in a long ti.
She rembered how she used to talk back whenever her mom lectured her about finding a dependable man, saying that if n were reliable, pigs would fly.

With that, she left the room as if escaping.
Forty minutes later, Bai Jinxuan walked out the door with Yaoyao, ready to take her to kindergarten.

Walking down the street, they suddenly heard a wave of cheering, swelling from a distance and quickly spreading throughout the whole camp.

Hearing this news, Bai Jinxuan was first stunned, then overjoyed. It ant that the war was finally over.
Chen Xu would be coming back!
She couldn’t bother with taking Yaoyao to kindergarten anymore. She picked her up and ran towards the headquarters. She was desperate to know the news about Chen Xu.

Two days later, it was almost noon.
In the room, Bai Jinxuan sat in front of the mirror, dressed in the white sleeveless dress which Chen Xu liked the most.
Every ti she wore this dress, his eyes would unconsciously drift towards her, particularly to her shoulders. It was really a peculiar preference.
“How strange, why has it beco so quiet outside?”
A vague unease settled in her heart. She put down her eyebrow pencil and picked up the lipstick, the shade that caught Chen Xu’s attention the most. She twisted it open and applied it to her lips.
As she did so, the lipstick suddenly broke in half.

The doorbell rang suddenly outside, making her heart tense up.
Could it be Chen Xu returning?
In a bit of a panic, she put down the broken lipstick, pulled out a tissue, and wiped off the excess from her lips. After checking in the mirror to make sure everything looked fine, she went to open the door.
Opening the door, she found the camp’s top leaders standing outside, their expressions somber.
Her heart began to race as she asked, “Chen… where’s Chen Xu?”
The leaders took off their hats with a sense of grief and said, “Comrade Chen Xu contracted a serious illness on his way back and passed away this morning.”
As they spoke, they stepped aside, revealing a stretcher carried by several people behind them, covered with a white cloth.
She walked step by step towards it, her hands trembling as she pulled back the white cloth to see Chen Xu’s all too familiar face, only now his eyes were tightly shut, his complexion pale, devoid of any sign of life.
In an instant, her world lost all its color as a loud thudding sound rang in her ears, growing faster and faster. She clutched her chest, gasping for air, and after a sharp pain, her vision went dark as she lost consciousness.
Dimly, she seed to hear noisy voices nearby, but all of it seed aningless to her.

Bai Jinxuan clutched her chest and began to sob loudly.
Outside, the agent Fangfang, who was communicating with the makeup artist, heard the commotion inside. Startled, she rushed in and saw Bai Jinxuan in such agony that she was taken aback. “What’s wrong with you?”
“My heart hurts so much…” Bai Jinxuan cried out, barely able to catch her breath, “Wu… it hurts so much, I feel like I’m about to die…”
“Don’t panic, I’ll take you to the hospital right away,” Fangfang said in a flustered tone.
