Chapter 113: 113 Take back (asking for recomndation tickets)
Chen Xu’s life had once again returned to tranquility: every day involved a morning run, going to work, leaving work, opening the store in the evening, and so on, cycling through the sa routine. The only embellishnt in his life was the occasional encounter with Cao Ningning in that small alley.
After the two of them had breakfast together, they formally got to know each other. Since then, when they bumped into each other, they would greet one another, and occasionally exchange a few words. Just a few words; she didn’t talk much. Chen Xu felt she was quite unique, emanating an odd charm like that of a strange girl.
Their interactions were confined to these brief encounters.
Chen Xu never asked her why she didn’t go ho every night after eight. He thought that maintaining such a light relationship was quite nice; taking a step further would sowhat spoil it.
She had never asked about his affairs either.
Their conversations consisted of things like, “The weather is nice today,” “It’s a bit cold today,” “Cats probably shouldn’t drink milk,” and so on.
Before they knew it, twenty days had passed, and there were less than twenty days left until the Spring Festival.
Just when Chen Xu thought his days would continue to be as calm as a millpond, he ran into that person he had almost forgotten about.
As the Spring Festival approached, work seed to pile up. That day, he was busy until after eight before he could leave work.
Since it was quite late, Chen Xu didn’t opt to run ho. He needed to hurry back to open the store since business had been improving recently; he couldn’t afford to miss out on making money. He scanned a bike, as riding is always faster than running.
He pedaled through various streets, zigzagging through the city. The city was indeed well-connected; many of the roads were ones he would typically never have the opportunity to travel, probably only familiar to those who delivered food or courier packages.
Chen Xu almost always ran back ho and had tried many different routes, finding the shortest one.
After turning the bike out of an alley, he saw a traffic light. Chen Xu looked up and noticed that there were only a few seconds left on the green light; he obviously couldn’t make it and slowed down.
He had just stopped in front of a pedestrian crossing when he casually surveyed the surrounding shops. The city at night seed more bustling than during the day, with even more people around.
Without intending to, he turned his head and locked eyes with soone across the street.
Subconsciously, he felt an urge to turn around and flee.
“Chen Xu.”
Unfortunately, it was too late. The other party had already raised their hand and called out his na loudly.
Should he pretend he didn’t see?
He lowered his head, seriously contemplating this question. Then, the crowd around him started moving; the light had turned green. He quickly rode across the street and stopped.
There was no helping it; Yang Jinxia was standing right there, and he couldn’t possibly pretend not to see her.
He put on a stiff smile and greeted her, “What a coincidence.”
“Yeah, we et again,” Yang Jinxia said with an unusually happy smile. “It just so happens that I’ve had a bit to drink and obviously can’t drive. I was worrying about how to get ho when you showed up. Drive ho, will you?”
Chen Xu scratched his head and said, “Um, sorry, but I’m in a bit of a hurry. I really can’t help you.”
“Then you could just drive to take care of your urgent matter and drop off after.”
“Well…”
Chen Xu hesitated, then said, “Actually, I already have a girlfriend.”
“So?”
Chen Xu didn’t look at her and insisted, “So, I should maintain so distance from other won.”
Yang Jinxia suddenly leaned in close to his face, looking into his eyes with a quasi-smile, “n with principles like yours are really rare these days.”
Chen Xu felt extrely uncomfortable under her gaze and said, “I should get going then.”
“You have the heart to leave here all alone?” Yang Jinxia said softly.
“You can call a ride-share service.”
“What happens if I run into a bad person?”
“Well, you could call a friend to co pick you up.”
Yang Jinxia’s tone deepened, “Here, I have no friends.”
Chen Xu felt sowhat helpless and said, “Have you forgotten? We’ve only t twice. Aren’t you afraid that I might be the bad guy?”
“If you really had bad intentions, you would have eagerly agreed by now, wouldn’t you?”
Chen Xu fell silent.
“Do you happen to be a little scared of ?” Yang Jinxia suddenly asked.
Faced with this question, Chen Xu didn’t know how to respond. To say he was scared, he indeed was a bit, or more precisely, it was probably wariness.
Seeing that he didn’t reply, Yang Jinxia went on to say, “When I was little, my grandma always criticized , saying I liked to show off my cleverness and that it would cost in the end. Surely enough, later on, my best friends distanced themselves from . Since then, I haven’t really made any friends.”
Chen Xu looked up, surprised, for she had never spoken words like these to him in the dreamscape.
“I don’t know why, but the first ti I saw you, I felt a strange familiarity, as if we had known each other for a very long ti.”
Hearing this, Chen Xu felt a subtle stir in his heart. Could it be, after the virtual dreamscape device had copied a real person, there would be so connection with the copy in the dreams? So, when the dream ended, the actual person would feel so sort of premonition?
If that were the case, many things would make sense.
“These days, I’ve been feeling a bit of regret for not getting your contact information that day. When I saw you just now, I was truly happy. But I never expected you to be like this…” Her voice trailed off, growing lower and lower.
Chen Xu stared at her, feeling an indescribable sensation in his heart. In the dreamscape, she had never shown such a vulnerable side. In his fixed impression of her, she was an incredibly resilient person, which often made him overlook her appearance.
Because of that, when she showed such vulnerability, the impact on him was all the more profound.
He felt his defenses crumbling and asked, “Where do you live?”
Yang Jinxia looked up, a glint of joy in her eyes, and said, “It’s a bit far.”
Chen Xu parked the bike properly, took the keys from her hand, and moved closer, indeed slling the alcohol on her breath; her cheeks were also flushed.
It was probably the alcohol that made her say all that.
This thought flashed through his mind as he got into her white Volvo. She sat in the passenger seat, placed her phone on the holder, and asked, “Do you want to go and take care of your business first?”
“No need, it’s inconvenient with the car.”
She didn’t press further, simply saying, “Then just follow the navigation.”
“Okay.” Chen Xu started the car and drove onto the road.
After a while, he casually asked, “Why did you drink so much?”
“There was a celebration at the company. I got happy and drank too much.” Yang Jinxia said as she rubbed her forehead with her fingers.
Chen Xu could hear the lazy tone in her speech. He glanced at her and saw that she was leaning back in her seat, her eyes nearly closed, and quickly said, “Hey, don’t fall asleep.”
“Mm.” She opened her eyes and brought up sothing, “By the way, where do you live? If it’s too far, you can drive my car back, don’t let it delay your business.”
Chen Xu glanced at the phone’s navigation; the destination was indeed a bit far. He hesitated, “What about your work tomorrow?”
“The company has given us a day off tomorrow. I don’t want to go out anyway.”
“Then, alright.” Chen Xu felt there was no need to be polite with her.
After driving for a while, he noticed the lack of sound next to him, turned his head, and saw her with closed eyes, breathing steadily, already asleep.
Really?
He suddenly felt overwheld.
