School was chaos.

The cultural festival was just a few days away, and every club, every class, every committee was in full preparation mode. The hallways were filled with students carrying decorations, setting up booths, arguing over last-minute details.

Akira, Rina, and Mia separated at the entrance: Mia to the student council room to coordinate logistics, Rina to cheerleading practice, and Akira to check on the various projects he was involved with.

His first stop was the art room.

He found Aoi there, alone, standing in front of the massive backdrop painting. She had paint smudges on her face and hands, her hair was a ss, and she looked like she hadn’t slept last night.

But the painting was finished.

"Aoi?" Akira approached slowly. "You okay?"

She didn’t turn around. "It’s done. Finally done."

He looked at the painting properly for the first ti since it had been completed. The mystical forest was breathtaking: trees reaching toward a purple-gold sky, shadows and light playing across the canvas in impossible ways.

But there was sothing else now, sothing that made his skin prickle.

The painting felt alive.

Not taphorically. Actually, genuinely alive. The trees seed to sway when he wasn’t looking directly at them. The shadows moved independently. And deep in the forest, between the painted trees, he could swear he saw sothing watching back.

"Ai, analysis."

"Already running. Darling, this is worse than I thought."

"Aoi," Akira said carefully, "how long have you been working on this today?"

"Since midnight. I couldn’t sleep. I kept seeing it in my dreams, calling to . I had to finish it. Had to make it perfect." She finally turned to look at him, and her eyes were red-rimd and exhausted. "Do you think it’s good enough?"

"It’s incredible. But maybe you should take a break now. Get so rest before tomorrow."

"I will. I just need to see it hung first. Make sure it looks right in position."

As if on cue, the art room door opened. Miss Satomi walked in, followed by Sakura.

Sakura’s eyes went imdiately to the painting, widening with genuine appreciation. "Wow. Saito-san, this is magnificent."

"Thank you, President." Aoi bowed slightly.

Sakura’s gaze shifted to Akira, and sothing flickered in her expression: interest, curiosity, maybe a hint of regret. "Kanzaki-kun. You are here too."

"Just helping where I can," Akira said neutrally.

"Hmmmm..." Sakura nodded, looking like she wanted to say more but couldn’t find the words. Miss Satomi broke the mont.

"We need to get this moved to the main entrance hall," the teacher said. "The unveiling is set for the festival opening morning. Can we get so help carrying it?"

Akira and several other students carefully lifted the massive canvas, transporting it through the hallways to the school’s main entrance. As they positioned it on the display stand, more students and teachers gathered to admire it.

The complints were universal: it was the best piece anyone had created for the festival. Aoi accepted the praise with quiet pride, though Akira noticed she kept glancing at the painting with an expression that was almost possessive.

"It’s perfect," she whispered to herself. "Everything I imagined. More than I imagined."

Evening fell. The school gradually emptied as students headed ho to rest. Akira stayed late, helping with last-minute setup, but eventually, even he had to leave.

As he walked out, he passed the main entrance one last ti. The painting stood there, illuminated by the hallway lights, looking even more alive in the semi-darkness.

He could have sworn one of the painted trees had moved.

Midnight.

The school was locked, empty except for one security guard, a older man who’d worked at Kawakami High for twenty years, making his round. He knew every hallway, every classroom, every hiding spot students used.

He was passing through the main entrance, about to head upstairs, when he paused at the painting.

Sothing about it looked different. The colors seed brighter sohow, more vivid despite the dim lighting. And was that... movent?

The guard stepped closer, squinting at the canvas. "Must be my old eyes playing tricks," he muttered..

He reached out to fix the display stand, and then... the painting shimred.

It didn’t move like fabric in the wind. It moved like water when sothing underneath disturbs it. The painted forest seed to pulse, the trees swaying more clearly now, and deep inside the canvas, between them, sothing shifted.

A pale, elongated hand with fingers that didn’t look human, reached out from the painting through a thin mbrane. The hand grabbed the edge of the fra, and then another hand appeared, and then a face...

The guard scread.

The figure pulled itself completely out of the painting. Its form was solid and real, even though it had been two-dinsional just monts ago. It was tall, looked like a person but was sohow wrong, with skin like tree bark and eyes that shone with the sa purple-gold light as the sky in the painting.

"No... wait... please..." The guard backed away, but the creature was faster.

It grabbed him by the shoulders, and with impossible strength, dragged him toward the painting. His scream cut off abruptly as he was pulled through the canvas, the surface rippling again as both he and the creature disappeared into the painted forest.

For a mont, silence returned to the hallway.

Then the painting settled, looking perfectly normal again... except for one detail.

Deep in the painted forest, if you looked very closely, you could see a new figure among the trees. A man in a security guard uniform, standing perfectly still, forever trapped in the two-dinsional world.

The Gateway was open.
