Ever since Cheng Ziyang was detained, Mrs. Cheng hadn’t seen Ziyang, not because she couldn’t, but because Ziyang didn’t want her to see him, to spare her from heartbreak.
Dong Xin Yan’s tone was slightly somber, a bit hesitant, "Auntie..."
"I know, you’ve been keeping from seeing Ziyang because you’re afraid I’d be sad. But Xinxin, I haven’t seen Ziyang for so long, I really miss him, and his birthday is coming up, yet he has to spend it in the detention center. Just thinking about it pains ..."
As Mrs. Cheng spoke, her voice unconsciously choked up again.
Listening to Mrs. Cheng, Dong Xin Yan’s heart twisted a little more with each word. How could she not feel the anguish? Originally, Ziyang’s birthday was during their honeymoon, the first since their marriage. She had already planned how to celebrate, how to surprise him, but now, none of it could happen.
Dong Xin Yan tightened her grip on her phone slightly, took a deep breath, suppressed the acidity rising in her heart, and replied in as calm a voice as she could muster, "Okay, Auntie. On Ziyang’s birthday, we’ll go spend it with him together."
Even if she couldn’t throw Ziyang a birthday full of surprises, at least on that day, she couldn’t let him spend it alone in the detention center.
She had to be with him for each of his birthdays. She had to be with him.

Secretary Lin arrived a bit early today, with the company still mostly empty, hardly anyone around. She walked into the main office briskly, humming a tune with breakfast in tow.
After setting her bag and breakfast at her spot, Secretary Lin headed to the kitchenette to make herself a cup of black coffee to wake up. But as soon as she got to the kitchenette door, she saw a tall figure inside, startling her into a sudden halt.
Why was the Boss here so early? She distinctly rembered that yesterday the Boss hadn’t stayed overnight at the company.
Gu Ningyi was standing by the coffee machine. He seed to be trying to make himself a cup of coffee but couldn’t figure out how to operate the machine. It wasn’t until Secretary Lin ca to her senses that she quickly stepped forward, respectfully saying, "Good morning, Mr. Gu. Would you like so coffee? Let make it for you."
Gu Ningyi hadn’t expected Secretary Lin to arrive so early. He paused for a few seconds, then stepped aside and said plainly, "Yes, make a cup of coffee and bring it to my office."
After a brief pause, he added, "No sugar."
Secretary Lin raised her eyebrows in surprise. According to Gu Ningyi’s usual coffee preference, he always took half a cube of sugar. Why didn’t he want sugar today?
She instinctively glanced up, but Gu Ningyi had already turned and walked out of the kitchenette.
Secretary Lin could only suppress her curiosity and began making the coffee.
Once it was ready, Secretary Lin carried the coffee toward the CEO’s office, lightly knocked on the door twice, and then pushed it open to enter.
Gu Ningyi was not seated behind his desk; instead, he was standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window. His tall and slender silhouette was facing away from Secretary Lin. She glanced up, and for so reason, the Boss’s back today seed a bit oppressive, even a little forlorn?
Why would such emotions appear on the Boss? Surely she was mistaken?
Secretary Lin blinked, intending to take a closer look, but Gu Ningyi’s deep, cool voice suddenly sounded as if he had eyes on his back, "Leave the coffee. You may go."
Secretary Lin was startled, swallowing reflexively.
