Chapter 81- Signs Of War (Part 3)
The buzzing large insects were flying toward the base at an idle pace, not too fast, not too slow. Unlike the rest of the army that seed to be very urgent and erratic, these things were completely relaxed, moving through the dark sky as they owned it.
Their giant bodies made them appear nightmarish, and the spine-chilling sound of their wings flapping together was mind-numbing.
"What should I even do... Are those things heading straight toward the base? I won’t be able to stop them in ti." He said coldly as he stared behind him. On top of that, the storm of insects was still in hot pursuit.
If Jack rushed back, this swarm would chase him back, and the problem would beco even bigger. But, he can’t continue pulling them away and leave those large abominations get to the base since he knew they would destroy it completely.
Both choices were horrible, and he couldn’t even find another third option. Jack decided to do sothing perhaps even more dangerous. Charging his hand with lightning, he blasted a large wave toward the flying Namoks above his head.
The lightning slamd into one of the monsters, piercing its hard husk. The monster fell to the ground with a loud slam. Seeing its giant size from up close, Jack realised how ssed up the situation is.
"This thing is at least three tis my size..."
He rembered how they were plucking humans like they were seeds and eating them instantly. He simply cannot let these things get anywhere near the base or everyone will die. Nobody can fight these things.
At the sa ti, the lightning attack grabbed the attention of the swarm as they looked down. Seeing the sole human standing there and feeling his strong presence, the insects suddenly changed direction as they started descending toward him at a faster speed.
"I grabbed their attention. Good." Starting to run again, Jack looked up, seeing that they were approaching him. The two swarms started moving after him. They rged together and moved in a huge cluster that clogged the entire street in a second.
He didn’t look behind him and focused on pulling them as far away as possible. However, the more he ran, the more the larger Namoks started closing the distance. Their speed was shockingly fast for their large size. Even Jack, who had the speed of 7 people, couldn’t keep them completely far away from him.
He kept throwing attacks at every possible mont. Using Myth’s Resolve and the Red Lightning, he killed many more insects.
However, as he ran, they started spreading through the small alleys and erged from all directions to attack him. Left, right, from the sky and even from the manholes beneath him.
The boy increased his speed even more.
"Hah, hah... Where am I even going? I don’t know..." Jack cursed as he looked over his shoulder. "I can’t even escape them."
He hoped that his speed would at least give him so sort of advantage, but it was clear that he was far too naive. These things were leaps and bounds ahead of the smaller Namoks.
Eventually, the very first insect got close enough to suddenly use its stinger to attack him.
*Swish*
With sheer instinct, Jack side-stepped and then counterattacked with his sword, slicing the monster in half with ease. Even when he isn’t faster, his strength is still very high and capable of cutting anything in his path.
The monster gushed blood and fell to the ground before more of them attacked him. The boy used his athletic body to dodge while attacking back as he continued moving. It was very awkward to fight in that position, but he had no other option.
One after the other, he killed more and more targets on this path. The number increased, and with it, Jack found himself unable to dodge everything. Luckily, his chesplate protected his vital body organs.
However...
*Swish*
"Agh!"
As he dodged an attack, another insect used its stinger and stabbed him in the arm. Quickly, he thrust his sword into its guts, killing it on the spot.
"Goddammit, that hurts." He clenched his teeth as he looked at his lacerated arm. The stinger had gone very deep in, and blood was gushing out endlessly. But, a mont later, it stopped bleeding on its own.
Jack’s healing ability was now 7 tis faster than before. Injuries that would have been threatening before were now nothing for his body.
Without wasting more ti, he continued running, being attacked left and right. As his speed was hindered, the smaller insects started getting closer and closer.
"Think, Jack. Think!"
His mind raced to find a solution. But the situation truly looked grim. He wanted but a small opportunity to escape and find a room to breathe.
That was until... Taking a random turn, Jack suddenly halted and looked ahead.
"Dead... end?"
Ahead of him was a previously open street that was completely blocked by several large piles of rubble from destroyed buildings. The rubble closed every possible path ahead, and even climbing looked impossible.
"You have got to be kidding ." His expression darkened as he tried to turn around and backtrack. But, he was imdiately t with the swarm that quickly closed the other, only possible exit for him.
He stopped, stepped back as his eyes turned a degree colder. He was screwed... Monuntally screwed.
’I didn’t know this path was closed. Great, really great.’
The monsters didn’t waste a second to attack from every angle. The large Namoks stabbed with their stingers while the rest crawled or flew toward him. The boy brandished his sword and battled. His sword moved like a flash, slicing and stabbing everything in his way.
*Swish*
"AGH!!"
It didn’t take long for another insect to stab his arm again, making him squint with pain. Then another, another. He killed many, but more and more were swarming him. His injuries started piling up as he backed away, getting cornered without any path to escape.
Even in this dire situation, he kept calm and collected, looking left and right for any possible escape route. He knew that he could find one if given enough ti... But, it was ticking... Very fast.
’I...’
Slowly, the boy started realising that he wasn’t going to be able to make it in ti. The hopelessness started getting into his head. Even for soone as tenacious as he is, this was far from sothing one would survive without so kind of variable to flip everything over.
His friends won’t make it here in ti, even if he contacts them now, and he was far too injured and exhausted to fight his way through.
’Is this really it...?’
*Swish* *STAB*
"ZZZZZ!!"
"Is this really it?"
Everything around him beca an echo. Only his body continued fighting while his mind wandered away to another place. His body was covered in blood, lacerations filling every part of him, and more scratches on his skin.
Everything seed to slow down to a halt. He could see a lot more and sense a lot more. He could hear his heart racing, his breathing and even the sound of the buzzing of the insects as they sward him.
He didn’t feel scared, or even worried... Just confused. How could this be the end? He thought he was destined for sothing. He thought his life wouldn’t end here, so soon. He had gained so much power and influence in such a short period of ti. He had been the strongest.
’If I’m the strongest and I couldn’t survive... Then, who could? Is this world simply dood to be erased completely? Were humans not supposed to fight back?’
He asked himself these questions, which he thought he had an answer for. But it was clear that he didn’t. He was as confused as the rest, if not more. He knew more, and yet he was even more confused.
The Divine Records have given him so many special powers, so much control over his own fate, that he assud it wanted him alive for a longer period of ti. Perhaps fate wasn’t in its control? Or it was simply toying with him as it wished. A sick, twisted ga that he can’t escape or resist.
Either answer made him sick to the stomach. Nothing felt worse to him than losing his most precious possession... His freedom.
He hated that greatly, and for a mont, he didn’t know if he even was supposed to do all of this or gain all of this.
"Screw it all..."
As the smaller insects reached him, they started crawling up his clothes, quickly pushing him down to the ground as they tried to invade his brain. He could feel their disgusting feet on his body as he continued resisting, killing and slicing anything he could. But he was exhausted beyond words.
The monsters started biting and pinching his skin. An imnse pain filled his mind, and he closed his eyes.
"What a sick joke..."
