The Forbidden Realm Gatekeeper's left hand shot out to grab the spear aid at his throat.
The Gatekeeper's reaction and movents were unexpectedly fast and agile.
The Gatekeeper caught the shaft of the spear, just behind the blade.
However, it had no effect!
The force behind the spear was more than the Gatekeeper could resist or control.
Although he had caught it, the spear's trendous speed and power caused it to rip free from the Gatekeeper's left hand. The friction tore the flesh from his palm, and once loose, the spear plunged into the Gatekeeper's throat.
The Gatekeeper let out a muffled grunt, and a hissing, airy sound escaped from his windpipe.
Fang Zhen's spear had struck true, but he could feel that it hadn't inflicted enough damage.
Not a single drop of blood flowed from the Gatekeeper's throat.
'Not a vital point.'
The Forbidden Realm Gatekeeper's body looked human, but it was rely similar in structure. Its inner workings were a mystery. The vital points of a mortal—the heart, internal organs, throat—were not fatal weaknesses for it.
Fang Zhen shook his spear, and the Magic Fla enveloping it suddenly erupted.
The remaining Magic Grease on the spear ignited in an instant, and the flas engulfed the Gatekeeper, turning him into a human torch.
Fang Zhen abruptly retracted his spear and retreated quickly.
As he moved, the Gatekeeper spun around violently, the iron chains at his waist whipping out to sweep through everything in their path.
But Fang Zhen had already foreseen it with his extrasensory perception. His retreat was tid perfectly; the massive chains swept past the front of his neck and shoulders, missing him by a re five or six centiters.
But those few centiters were an impassable gap.
Fang Zhen continued to back away, creating more distance.
The Forbidden Realm Gatekeeper didn't pursue. Instead, he let out a pained grunt and stood still, waiting for the Magic Fla on his body to burn out.
Fang Zhen held his spear, observing the Gatekeeper.
'This guy can use both physical and Magic attacks, and he's strong with both.'
'What's even more impressive is his ridiculously tough constitution.'
He estimated the Gatekeeper's Strength was at least 17 or 18, and his Constitution was at least 18, possibly even over 20.
'No vital points, no obvious weaknesses. He can take a hit and dish one out. He's strong and agile, and seems to have a lot of Magic spells, too.'
The Gatekeeper wasn't as bizarre as the other bosses he'd fought, but with absolutely no weaknesses in any area, he was a high-level Hexagon Warrior.
Even the Gatekeeper's hair hadn't been burned away. 'I wonder if his whole body is made of so special material.'
As he was assessing the Gatekeeper's strength, the look in the Gatekeeper's eyes, visible through his disheveled hair, began to change.
Before, the Gatekeeper had looked down on Fang Zhen.
It wasn't personal; the Forbidden Realm Gatekeeper's very identity dictated such an attitude toward all mortals.
But now, the Forbidden Realm Gatekeeper's gaze held a seriousness, an attitude of looking at Fang Zhen as an equal, a being of the sa tier.
"Have I been away from the powerful warriors of the mortal world for so long that my judgnt has faltered?"
"Your strength astonishes . This is a realm unattainable by ordinary people."
"My earlier words were disrespectful to you, and the thought of a quick victory was unrealistic. I may have grown complacent from my long years of peace, failing to give a warrior such as yourself the proper consideration."
"For that, I apologize."
"And as my apology, I will treat you as a worthy opponent. I will use my full power and, in doing so, show you my respect."
"Co. Let
correct my perception of you in battle."
The Gatekeeper spoke with sincere conviction.
Fang Zhen nodded. The Gatekeeper was indeed a worthy opponent.
"You're not bad yourself. You're one of the strongest opponents I've ever faced, in terms of overall power."
"But the one who falls today will be you."
"Again!"
Spear in hand, Fang Zhen readied himself for battle once more.
The Magic Fla still burned on the Forbidden Realm Gatekeeper's body and showed no signs of extinguishing anyti soon.
Suddenly, the Gatekeeper took a deep breath.
It was an extrely long breath, and he inhaled more than just air. Wisps of black energy could be seen flowing into his mouth, looking like the wind-up for so kind of skill.
Fang Zhen's focus sharpened instantly.
After finishing his deep breath, the Gatekeeper suddenly raised his left hand, and a burst of black light erupted from his body.
The black light exploded outward from the Gatekeeper, expanding a short distance from his body to form a faint sphere of dark light.
It was faint because the sphere was not solid; it was composed of streams of black energy that constantly shifted, dynamically forming a protective orb around the Gatekeeper.
The expanding shockwave from the black sphere blasted the Magic Fla off the Gatekeeper's body. The flas were thrown onto the white, misty ground, where they extinguished.
Fang Zhen frowned slightly.
'This move the Gatekeeper is using seems like a shield, a bit like the Gang Zan Seal. From the looks of it, it should be able to nullify or absorb damage.'
Fang Zhen had a premonition that the Gatekeeper was about to use a major ability.
'The Forbidden Realm Gatekeeper's body is different from a human's; it has no fatal weaknesses. Now he's even activated a shield-like skill. He's most likely preparing to unleash so ultimate attack and put up a shield beforehand to prevent being interrupted.'
'Rushing in now isn't the answer. I don't know what skill he's about to use, so acting rashly is too risky. Better to wait and see what he does first.'
Besides, Fang Zhen judged that this shield wouldn't last for long.
'The Gatekeeper is strong, but he's not a perpetual motion machine. He can't maintain an area-of-effect defense indefinitely.'
'It won't be too late to press the attack after this move is over.'
He didn't just stand idle, either. He took a yellow, cube-shaped gel from his utility pouch and popped it into his mouth.
This was an "Energy Gel" he had traded for, an alchemical product exclusive to the Whig Society. Consuming it would rapidly restore a certain amount of stamina and Spiritual Power.
